Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm cinematic leaks

Teaser for Blizzard's second installment in RTS trilogy arrives on video-sharing sites, depicting ghost assault on Kerrigan.

Blizzard Entertainment has been having a rough time keeping video of the second installment in its Starcraft II series under its hat. Late last year, what was purported to be an in-development CG cinematic ostensibly spoiled Heart of the Swarm's ending. Now, a second Heart of the Swarm leak has hit the Internet outside of Blizzard's customary channels, though this one falls squarely in the promotional column.

Blizzard's latest leak captures Kerrigan in the midst of an embarrassing moment.

The leaked teaser begins with what appears to be a team of ghosts infiltrating a secure compound. The ghosts make short work of a security retinue, before the group's leader issues the foreboding command: "Find Kerrigan." Her statement is, of course, in reference to the Zerg faction's leader, Sarah Kerrigan, who was once a ghost herself before being assimilated by the Swarm and set up as their queen.

The trailer then offers its first glimpse of series protagonist Jim Raynor, a space marine who is Kerrigan's primary love interest. With Raynor in hot pursuit, the ghosts gain access to a sealed chamber. However, that chamber proves to be their end, as a massive energy burst from within levels the room and destroys the door.

Raynor then enters the blown-out room, only to be greeted by a posterior shot of an individual that is ostensibly Kerrigan.

Blizzard has yet to affix a firm launch window to Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm, though the game's director has largely discounted a 2011 release. Last October, Battle.net project director Greg Canessa indicated that the game was approximately 18 months out, putting its release date in the March-April 2012 range. However, Blizzard is notorious for altering its release date plans.

@GreySeven Yes, and what I mentioned wasn't a solid release date. 2012 is/was the speculated release year for HotS due to Blizzard policy of releasing 1 core game a year and D3 is still speculated to be released within this year. I recall reading an article on IGN about Blizzard mentioning they'll be having external testing on Q3 of 2011. All this is speculation except for the IGN article and I know that, just saying, if things go well to Blizzard Diablo 3 may or may not be released this year. As for HotS, I wouldn't be surprised if it goes for 2013, though I wouldn't be surprised if its 2012 either. I still believe it'll be out on 2012 even if its late.

@ounk950-jade empire isn't that good. Bioware's good games are the ones that took at least 2-3 years to make, which is almost equivalent to Blizzard's average development time. Valve hasn't release any game with Blizzard's scope since HL2. I mean in terms of lenght and content.

Meh... while I did like the cinematics and hated the gameplay... I hate the Zerg.

@method115 even though I didnt like the story that much I did enjoy the missions.

@Sirbobislost Silly, Cataclysm isn't a game, it's a last ditch effort to save a dying game. @Ravenchrome Now look at the review scores for literally every other one of their games. Good developers make mediocre games occasionally. Remember, devs are only human just like us. And publishers are greedy bastards unlike us. Do the math.

@Elrax Blizzard giving a release date is like having a drunk throw darts at a penny from ten yards.

@poopinpat The best thing about SC to me was the story. Yes i played online but I loved the story more. The story in SC2 wasn't that bad to me actually, a lot of people might not like it and thats fine but I thought it was pretty good.

Does anyone know if there are going to be any new units released in the expansion. It seems like right now its just another campaign

@parrot_of_adun Thanks for the support. You would think that the Gamespot community would understand that a sufficient understanding of the English language is necessary to get the point across. @protonian87 The comment was posted to simply state that the author of the comment wrote it in such a way that, to me, it was unreadable.

"Blizzarrd" Entertainment? Wow, not only a teaser, but a name change for the company, very clever adding that extra 'r' in there. :P

and to all the people complaining about its story: you are right the story sucks but SC isn't PRIMARILY about the story...it's more of an afterthought and serves as a basic tutorial more than anything (I liked the story from the original SC but in the end what do you end up playing?). I hope to see the multiplayer aspect of the game evolve significantly with each expansion and expect to see more of the same in terms of single player plot.

SC2 is already good. hopefully the next 2 installments make it as legendary as the original.

@Max_160 I dont know your age or your life experience if you have any, but I am sure Spartacus had the mental complexity of a drunkard in your opinion also. A simple person leading a revolution by himself?! Sure. any burger filled fat head could wake up and lead a revolution without some generals and comrades just him and his harmonica. And do you think that in a dictatorship people will have live reports? Those reporters would have been shot in the first 5 minutes. If i wanted Tom Tucker to present the news i would watch Family Guy. The game offers no sense of realism. I feel like in a comedy, how can i emotionally be involved? Using my imagination in a skirmish could be more rewarding. Hope the Zerg wont have news with zerglings throwing pies at eachother.

sirbob you dont have to play the whole game to know the story just look at the setting. I know the story based online I didn't like it, looked cartoony my brother is or was a hardcore star craft fan still plays the first but thought the second one looked really average. I cant believe I spent 60 bucks on this game and deeply regret it. Just my opinion not fact, but I just didn't like the look of it. After this long I expected a much better looking game. Looks are relevant when you wait 10 freaking years for it to come out only to realize you mine as well stick to the first game.

Hey baal. Command and conquer generals and other expansions, homeworld 2 was an amaing game that had loads of mod content that made it even more awesome, believe it or not plenty of other rts games that I would say is on par if not better than the first star craft, but all of those old games beat star craft 2 hands down. Terrible story I wont get the other games not worth my time to think about they love playing the waiting game, well I'm done playing with them. I thought star craft 2 looked worse than the first one in many ways. Story and well didn't like the look of the game. Cartoony.

My guess is that Heart of the Swarm comes out Q2/Q3 of 2012 (May-July, around time Wings of Liberty came out last year). Blizzard would be (officially) making noises if they were going to release it this year, even if its late Q4 2011.

wow the kid at the bottom is biased. i dont want a stereotypical starwars game of heroes. jim raynor is a simple guy that leads revolution. thats what i like about him. theres also lots of humor. idk whats your problem but the story is one of the best. way better than wacraft story in my opinion

Leaked. hahahahaha. How I love leaked stuff. Do this guys think we are so stupid. I'm sick and tired of strategies. They announce games years before they are ready to be released. And then they come out with some story that seems to be made on a beer break. Don't get me wrong Starcraft 2 in every aspect of it is an amazing game. Well balanced, diverse, good looking and not disappointing at all compared to the first. But the Campaign story was utter stupidity made by people who do not understand anything or just don't take themselves serious. Any person who knows the smallest thing about totalitarian propaganda will agree with me, those short news bulletins Raynor watches made me click ESC in frustration as well as other aspects of the story. It looks as it was written for retarded children... Raynor seems more like a drunkard than a army commander, he fights in the name of love and he lives in a shack... he misses only a banjo. All are in contrasts with the space wars you fight... I mean come on... a man leading Battlecruisers drinks alone in a bar... The game is basically ready so are they meaning to tell me that some soap opera stories take so much to think out!? Where are those people who developed Warcraft3 or I don't know, other people... half of the people playing Starcraft could come up with a better campaign in a week.

Choad-Warrior

@baal46 Supreme Commander. What can I say, I loved that game. And I wouldn't call Starcraft world shattering...South Korea shattering sure, but world? Hardly. WoW had a much bigger impact than Starcraft. EDIT: Oh and though it was more than 5 years ago, Age of Empires 2 was fantastic. Oh and Rise of Nations.

baal46
baal46

Come on. SC2 isn't the world-shattering revolution that SC1 was, but it is an extremely solid RTS with a great singleplayer campaign AND fun, competitive multiplayer. All while staying true to the style and feel of the original. What did you expect? If that wasn't enough for you, your standards are impossibly high. I defy anyone to name a higher-quality and more well-rounded RTS title released in the last 5 years.

Failed game I cant even play it anymore after 1.3 patch I get "error downloading content please try again later" I have been trying for about 5 months now I would never have expected it from Blizzard don't mess Diablo 3 up

@davidsworld3 You played the first mission didn't like it and stoped playing but your saying you didn't like the story? Right.... And since when do graphics make a game great? All they do is make it look nice gameplay is far more important

@punk950 Last year they released cataclysm and starcraft2 And as for bioware releasing once a year did you even play dragon age2? Quality>Quantity

@davidsworld3 - Wait. So you came here to announce to the world that you love console gaming on this PC-centric article and to comment on why Blizzard should make console games. Yay you.

@Kyoh - I see where you're coming from but I believe you are mostly making assumptions on future SC2 games that nobody really has details of aside from a leaked trailer. If you're really bothered more by Blizzard's business practices than the quality of their games, you're always welcome to wait for their Battle Chest version - which may have all 3 SC2 games - but, of course, that's just another assumption.

I dont see how it takes almost 2 years for a game that is operating on very dated engine. I just cant get used to the idea and it's why I will never touch their games again, diablo 3 even looks dated, all they are doing is milking old games that should have been exapnded not turned into more cartoony look.

davidsworld3
davidsworld3

I thought star craft 2 would be amazing and really great graphics and story but after I bought it and played the first mission didn't play it since, too me I cant accept it plenty of games released years ago look better and have a more interesting story. I no longer like blizzard for their atrocious development time and price they want for a game that too me was lack luster and in most ways inferior that to the first game. Oh well I lack a computer to play big strategy games anyways I've been very happy with console gaming. For one thing the quality seems to be better than top end pc's anymore. I dont remember the last time I bought a big pc game. Blizzard should have gone console and made awesome star craft games like ghost if it was finished and other games, but they decided to milk what they made ten years ago so they dont have my vote anymore.

well blizard is the best gaming company in the galaxy yes they take too long to release games but since when have they dissapointed neeeveeeerrr starcraft 2 too forever to come out and it was one the best games of 2010 if not the best i dont care how long they take to release a product as long as its good i dont care.Unlike activision releasing call if duty every year but is the same crap over and over 5 hours single player and a mediocre multyplayer really lame

Drakkengoth

Well, at least they are not taking 12 years to churn out part two :\

@Forcecaster Take off your tinfoil hat and take 12 seconds to learn who bought who in the blizzard activision deal. the company that has owned blizzard for as long as we loved blizzard, Vivendi, bought activision. Blizzard and Activision are sister companies, not parent companies. Activision has 0 influence on Blizzard. Blizzard has 0 influence on Activision. Both of their profits make the French very happy. @tobbe4321 Assuming you are talking about the first link, all reports indicate that it was a scrapped ending for WoL and not an actual possible ending for HotS. It's for the former...the word teaser seemed to have slipped past you.

m4a5

@Kyoh I wouldn't call the the more recent 4-6 hour COD campaign's full, at least Starcraft 2 has 10+ hours and then some replayability. And then it should be expansion packs (like Brood War was) that do not sell for as much as a full game...

Forcecaster
Forcecaster

@demonic_85 And they are under Activision so they're waiting for the right time to make tons of cash. @Kyoh Because "WoW is one of the five pillars of Activision's base" - B. Kotick... So it doesn't matter what Blizzard does until there is an MMO on their side. Blizzard has became the MMO part of Activision until Bungie shows there new IP.

@protonian87

So... Then it would be fair to say that you, and a few others are a bit too... Sensitive, and can't shrug off such completely trivial and benign things as razor's post, at least as I see it. Sorry if that sounded disrespectful to you. That is honestly not my intention. However if you interpret it that way, I'm sorry.
