Starbreeze's P13 revealed

Syndicate dev's game with filmmaker Josef Fares called Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons; due on XBLA, PSN, and PC during spring 2013.

Syndicate and Chronicles of Riddick developer Starbreeze Studios has revealed its long-secret P13 project with filmmaker Josef Fares. The Swedish studio has announced the game as Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, slating the project to arrive on Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and PC during spring 2013.

Two brothers must work together to save their dad in Starbreeze's new game.

505 Games will publish the game, which tells the story of two sons journeying to find the "Water of Life," the only cure for their dying father's disease. "One must be strong where the other is weak, brave where the other is fearful," reads a line from the game's announcement.

Fares, a Swede, is most notable for his award-winning films Zozo (2005) and Leo (2007). The first of those films won the Nordic Council Film Prize in 2006, while the latter was a Forum selection at the 58th Berlin International Film Festival.

Starbreeze recently hired former Battlefield 3 lead designer David Goldfarb and acquired Payday: The Heist developer Overkill Software.

Sounds interesting enough. I like Starbreeze and, weirdly enough, played a ton of Syndicate. I aware it's nothing like the old games but, hey, a fun game is a fun game.

Though I have to say they need to scale down the light bloom effects. You could get completely blinded by it in Syndicate and this doesn't seem any better.

Judging but what little we have here, my money's on yet ANOTHER "dark retelling" of some brothers Grimm story, possibly with metafiction themes (with the brothers themselves as the heroes).

Just my speculations.

What the hell happened to Starbreeze?!! Their first game, The Chronicles of Riddick, was completely AWESOME on the og Xbox. Since then, they've put out trash. Obviously this studio is capable of making great stuff. SO WHAT'S THE PROBLEM, STARBREEZE??? Pull your collective head out of your ass and get back on track.

If it does well enough I'm sure they will release a sequel, "Sons: A Tale of Two Brothers". :P

I am rather sad the title Syndicate no longer refers to the Dos version which was godly. Whatever that garbage was they put out last year ruined the name. Bullfrog made syndicate not Starbreeze.

I like Starbreeze, I'll check it out. :P

Nice! I remember reading that these guys never really had the choice to do new things (hence why a majority of their games are based off known franchises and such). Its good to see they finally have the freedom to do something entirely new for a change.

Will definitely be keeping my eye on this one.

Oh sod off with your digital-only anti-gamer alienating tactics.

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay was good. Syndicate was not (very) good. Guess this will be the "best of 3" decider.

Love the title. Makes me want to find out what the story is. :)

@Nerdonomicon "Yet ANOTHER "dark retelling" of some brothers Grimm story" Can you shed some more light on that statement mate?

@Vodoo What? The only other games they have done were a remake of Riddick with new levels, The Darkness (generally regarded as awesome), and Syndicate (which was nothing special after EA rushed it out without much fanfare). That's hardly anything to panic over.

@Raditz5 meh I thought the new syndicate was pretty fun as well. It was obviously very different from the originals but I enjoyed it, all the gadgets kinda reminded me of a futuristic goldeneye. Just like all the old school fallout fans got pissed when fallout 3 was announced, but I think fallout 3 was just as good as the originals, just different. I don't see the harm in making a new fresh game out of a series that had been dead for years.

@SpookyJack A lot of games now has no physical version yet still sell well. In fact for many of those games physical copies are kinda of a niche market.

@DarkSaber2k From what I've read the old Starbreeze team that worked on Riddick already left, so I'm guessing its pretty much a whole new studio with new people now, guess that also explains why Syndicate was so... iffy.

Dammit that should say that Syndicate was (very) not good, not the other way round.

@Hrodwulf666 It's in movies, games, art, literature: it's everywhere around us. NOBODY does those fairytales "straight" anymore. At some point, someone figured out that the originals were a lot darker than the versions we got as kids, and it became trendy to make "Dark Fairytales" based on that fact, but these days the concept has gotten so out of control that you can barely shake a werewolf around a "Brother's Grimm Original" story without hitting a child's corpse anymore.

@DarkSaber2k Digital is fine when it's optional next to a hard copy. If the latter isn't planned or available then it's a no sale for me. Period.

@koospetoors  @DarkSaber2k  Did you play Enclave? That was a bloody good game with atmosphere, a good storyline and nice gameplay.Makes me look forward to this one too.

DarkSaber2k

@Nerdonomicon  @Hrodwulf666 To be fair, the originals WERE dark. The versions WE got as kids are a result of a few centuries dumbing down and sanitizing, each generation making them a bit more "kiddie friendly" than the last.

@SpookyJack Look who's talking, fool. You're the one who started with "Slave" and "boy" and "child". DarkSaber2k is absolutely correct and you're both wrong and ignorant and result to insulting your opposition FIRST, then proceed act all high and mighty when you get your own medicine. You're a hypocrite who is completely unaware of himself.

@SpookyJack Never mind the fact that they are hardly shooting themselves in the foot by using the method of distribution that outsells hardcopy retail by several degrees of magnitude.

DarkSaber2k
DarkSaber2k

@SpookyJack Their previous 2 projects were funded by publishers Activision and EA respectively. You apparently know bugger all about game development or financing.

SpookyJack
SpookyJack

@DarkSaber2k Limiting the means of distribution is shooting themselves in the foot and that's the end of it. This has bugger all to do with not being able to afford it, especially if their previous two projects saw retail releases.

@SpookyJack The term "Cutting your nose off to spite your face" springs to mind.  Not to mention the attitude kinda comes across like "If they can't afford to pay a company to mass produce DVDs and are using digital distribution because it's all they can afford then fuck 'em"
