Star Wars: The Old Republic server queues expected for foreseeable future

EA and BioWare release list of servers for new players to avoid; no ETA on ability to transfer characters to different servers.

by

Star Wars fans have been waiting years for The Old Republic, which makes it particularly cruel that the game finally launched yesterday and the first thing many players had to do was wait in line to join the game on crowded servers. Electronic Arts and BioWare are well aware of the problem, but in a post on the game's official forums yesterday, senior online community manager Stephen Reid explained why it might not get better anytime soon.

This server ain't big enough for the both of us.

"We're monitoring all of our servers around the clock, and we're raising server population caps where required," Reid said. "However, to ensure our long-term goals of server stability and healthy populations, we do not want to raise population caps too rapidly. We want incoming players to populate lower population servers."

Providing some additional incentive for newcomers to hop on board the game's more sparsely populated servers, Reid explained that the busiest servers are nearing their absolute population caps and are likely to have constant queues, even during off-peak times. As for those who have already started playing on one of the busier servers, their frustration isn't likely to be alleviated anytime soon.

"At this time, we can only ask for your patience," Reid said. "Population caps are being gradually raised on these servers, but raising them too fast will create an influx of new players and perpetuate the problem. We do not expect the queues to alleviate on these servers for the foreseeable future."

Reid also said the developers are working on a character transfer ability so players can move to a new server, but there is no estimated time of arrival for that feature. However, one thing that will be addressed shortly, according to Reid, is a problem where players in line who get disconnected need to reenter the queue from the end of the line.

Because of the long queues to enter a game, EA and BioWare are advising players not to create new characters on the following busy servers:

The Harbinger--US West Coast--PVE
The Swiftsure--US West Coast--PVP
The Fatman--US East Coast--PVP
Bloodworthy--EU English--PVP
Frostclaw--EU English--PVE
Legions of Lettow--EU English--PVP
The Red Eclipse--EU English--PVE
Tomb of Freedom Nadd--EU English--PVP
Darth Revan's Mask--EU German--PVP
Darth Traya--EU German--PVP
Jar'Kai Sword--EU German--PVP
Hrakert Rift--EU French--PVP

@scottwilkins DCUO had the same problem as ToR and so did WoW with every expansion, people kept crowding to certain servers instead of spreading out evenly. I've experienced this issue with WoW over and over, but Blizzard knows how to handle the situation flawlessly, so it doesn't persist more than a few days. Since this is Bioware's first MMO they will be a little slower with handling the situation, but they have put out a large number of new servers since launch.

alright a list of servers for me to join when I get the game.

Are people still playing this?

@ LilRussh, no it doesn't mean it's popular. It means that EA goofed again. They are concerned that the longivity of the game kinda stinks so they don't want to add more resources to a problem that will go away very soon. EA just doesn't get it. How many MMOs have been released with this same problem? And, they don't know how to remedy it yet? It's not logistics stopping the gameplay here, it's greed.

Login queues can suck my balls!!!!!!!! I will not even bother messing around with this game if I can't just open the game and play.

@mtbrdude87 umm...thats nothing to brag about dude...that just means ToR is more popular than guild wars was at launch. ToR already has a lot of servers and most are full.

@ jayjay444 Every time you reply to one of my posts, you make yourself look more and more ignorant. Do us all a favor and don't ever speak about game subscriptions again. You will lose every time.

They should add Prophecy of the Five to the list. Its 1230 in the afternoon on a Thursday, and i have a queue. Still, even with queue, when i log in, everything is great :)

They need to get the ability to transfer characters in there toot sweet. For instance, I'm not playing it at the moment, and everyone I know who plays it is in a guild on Frostclaw. Even if I were minded to start playing, there's no way I'd want to start on a different server, especially if there's no guaruntee I could transfer. That sort of thing will hurt the initial momentum which any new MMORPG badly needs.

The flip side of queues is once in game I've had no lag! I've played everyday since early access began and had 3-5 queues with the longest wait being less than 20 minutes. Great launch for me so far.

No one should really be surprised by this. It happens with every major launch, which is why I am holding off and will allow it to smooth out and patch any problems. Like I said, after this long whats another month or two of waiting. Plus there are a ton of other great games to play now.

The_Keyblade99
The_Keyblade99

Its funny :p i have had absolutely no trouble logging in since day one, Longest i have waited was 5minutes. A wait really isn't that big a deal, just queue up and go do something else like watch a movie. If thing are really that bad start a new character on a different server, or just man up and get through it. New servers will be up in time.

@emperiox well that will be in 2-3 months since you need to select a sub membership or purchase a time card for those who don't have a credit card like many do in europe... :@ to even get the free 30 days...

emperiox
emperiox

I actually think that this will lose them more business in the long run. Trying to save an extra few bucks at the expense of the customers' ability to play and causing players frustration will cause them to lose subs before they can say "I'm sorry". This will probably cost them alot of subs in 1-2 months. (after peoples' free month of playtime ends)

Vangaurdius I wonder if this is intentional knowing that their game won't be received very well This game recieve well already stop trying to mak swtor look bad cause u fail at it.... You are just one of those little minority annoying ppl who think that making comments louder will make look this game bad 1.5mil so i guess if we move 1000k ppl u are one of them who hate it and still no matter how hard u and the others try to make this game look bad u will always been put aside in a cave crying and raging because nobody is listening to u poor ppl. Now that u got served go back and play some f2craps or that 1 pixel farmville game cause in overall nobody cares about your poor trashy opinion

Damnation_6
Damnation_6

@ Vanguardius AHAHAHA...no. That is a very silly notion. This game is awesome and will be get good scores. All those users giving very low scores on Metacritic are dishonest. I'm in one of the most crowded servers allas. And I recently found out why....some internet personality plays on it so there are many people that wanna join it.*sigh* But how the hell would they squize out more money by havng ques from 15-30 minutes...people will still be able to play after that. Besides....most of the european servers don't have a que anymore.

GiantsFan2290

honestly the wait is not that bad, unless you are dumb enough to get into one of the heavily populated servers. 10-15 minute wait does not bother me in at all, but then again, i am not anal like a lot of people commenting on this.

I wonder if this is intentional knowing that their game won't be received very well so they're desperately trying to squeeze every penny they can out of it going so far as to ensure there are long queue times so that it may end up being another month that you end up paying for in order to see the end game content.

I think every good enough mmo got probs like this at launch. And believe yesterday they did something with it, cause it was something like 30 mins wait everywhere at least, after i relogged and came back in 10 mins everything was without queue

I think the biggest problem is for those of us players who were put onto specific servers through the guild implementation feature. Great idea, but once the guilds populated the servers, they should have cut those servers off from population and let new players only join new servers for a time. It royally sucks for people whose guild was implemented into Swiftsure, who the entire freaking Oceanic community who DIDN'T get implemented through the pre-guild signup decided that Swiftsure was the "unofficial Oceanic server". This has led to queue times of up to 6 hours for some people. They should have capped the servers before they ever allowed them to get to a point of having hundreds of players in a queue. My own server, at times, had me at number 700 in line in a queue. And my server wasn't even one of the ones listed!

Zloth2
Zloth2

@jayjay444, no, what we are paying for is to have fun. And it's working very well. When it stops being worth that much to me, I'll stop playing. Why should I have less fun because you think I should be paying less?? P.S. I've had to wait in queues for a grand total of about 5 minutes so far and I've been playing for a week. These big queues are only on a few severs.

@poodger im implying that idiot gamers like u are the reason why gaming is becoming so expensive, if u wont to spend 40 quid for a game and then a 15 pound a month fee after that then be my guest waste your money. they make more than enough money to maintain the servers just by simple selling the game the monthly fee is just a rip off and pure profit for the company. your just paying to make some rich guy richer.

A_Belmont

I haven't bought into SWTOR yet, and I'm glad I'm taking the wait and see approach. I hope bioware and EA can work out some kind of discount, noone should have to pay $15 a month to wait....

Not having the mechanism for transfers (and other queue alleviators) in place already is inexcusable for a AAA MMO launching in 2011. It is like they learned nothing from other MMO launches. They knew how many pre-orders they had, so they had to know this would be a problem. Now the people who pre-ordered can't play with their friends who didn't and that kind of defeats the point of making the game an MMO. EA Austin is in over their heads on this one.

JasPlun

As a veteran mmorpg game player I back Bioware and EA on the stance they are taking right now. There is nothing more boring than a server that ends up empty or not populated enough.WoW had the same issues as it launched as well, but in time it got better.I think they learned from Warhammer what can happen if you fill to many servers up too fast, you end up with a very un-balanced population. My advice to you folks that have never played a game like this too be patiant and it will pay off in the long run.

didn't you know guys, EA is using SWTOR to test their new casual game, Queue tycoon, the most realistic simulation of waiting in line you will ever see!

The server my friends are playing on always has a queue. Doesn't bother me much since I made my Jedi on a low pop server and I prefer playing Jedi over Sith lol.

In a few years this won't be the problem. They'll be talking server mergers then.

Poodger

@jayjay444 Are you kidding? So what you are implying is, no adults anywhere play games? Because people who work DO play games. There are 24 hours a day, and a full time worker will only spend 8 of those hours working, 8 sleeping, and 4 doing other things. Not to mention weekends. Even full time workers can play roughly 2-4 hours every day. And 2-4 hours of entertainment is worth the 5 minutes of work to play a day.

Guys, stop being dense. There are only queues on the highly populated servers. The lesser populated ones aren't affected.

pretty lame imo paying 15 a month to wait in line to play if issues like this stay around for long I'll be saying goodbye to this galaxy.

its hard to stabilize the server queue if they dont alow server transfer

@poodger those with a job that play online rpgs such as this one wont have the time to play them most of the time. so then again what is the point in paying to play it in the first place if your not going to play it often.

u pay 40 quid for the game and then theres a monthly fee to play the game? what a joke games u pay a monthly fee to play should be free to download none of this pay evry month rubbush ill never play a mmorpg again waste of money.

Well, I guess I'll stick with EVE Online for awhile longer. One plus about EVE is never having to wait to log in.
