Star Wars: The Old Republic free-to-play this weekend

BioWare's spacebound MMORPG dropping entry fee for new gamers March 15-19, will let players try out eight character classes, level to 15.

by

Gamers wishing to try out BioWare's massively multiplayer online role-playing game Star Wars: The Old Republic without paying are in luck. From March 15-19, the game will be free to play, the company has announced.

The Old Republic will adopt a F2P model, but only for four days.

Beginning tomorrow at 12:01 a.m. Central, gamers can secure a "Weekend Pass" for The Old Republic and try out the opening adventures of each of the game's eight character classes. Gamers can travel to each class's origin world, as well as their side's capital worlds.

Additionally, those holding a Weekend Pass can try out the game's player-versus-player warzones and work together through Flashpoints: The Esseles and The Black Talon.

The free-to-play version of The Old Republic is not without its restrictions. As stated on the game's website, the Weekend Pass is available only to those who have never had an active game account. Additionally, players can only level their character to 15 and must stay within the above-mentioned zones.

On top of that, players will not be able to use general chat, trade chat, or PVP chat. Further, free players will not be able to exchange mail with other trial characters.

Lastly, free Old Republic players will not be able to use the Galactic Trade Network, earn Legacy XP, or level Crew Skills ranking above 40.

BioWare said it does not plan to delete trial characters following the conclusion of the free weekend, which officially ends on Monday, March 19 at 2 a.m. CT. However, the company said it reserves the right to delete trial characters on "abandoned" accounts.

For more on the capabilities and restrictions for Weekend Pass holders in The Old Republic, check out the game's website.

@Otto81 My PC is older than yours its a system I built myself a long time ago Intell 2.4 core 2 duo,ATI Radeon x800 XL,3G Ram and like I said it would not run SWTOR all I got was a black screen and a ui.My point is my system played SWG,EQ2 on high settings and WoW for the last several years.I am not going to pay more money just to play a game that is why WoW has so many subs people like me can play it.SWTOR is just a Solo heavily instanced mmo.WoW has instances yes,but the world is huge not just 200 or less in an instance.

hmmm, too bad there's a beta test for TERA this weekend, otherwise I'd give this a try. Free weekend is a bad sign. This game is going downhill. It's too bad so many companies put all their chips into an MMO game. They are very hard to do well.

This is a REALLY good game. Better than any other MMO out there. But only for your first play through. Which brings me around to my point that Bioware should have made kotor 3. Or Lucas could've let obsidian do it or something. I like this game, but its basically a single player online game. If that makes sense. Play it alone and the story will grip you. Screw the online crap.

Something is wrong isnt?... I bet it is.... 200M for this? Seriously? I wonder what game Blizzard can make with 200M... Blizzard >> Bioware on MMORPGs anyday.

This game was really unfortunate, though I really believed that going from level 1-50 was very enjoyable because I loved the story for the characters, the rest of the game was seriously lacking in almost every way.

It is a pretty enjoyable game, but I have not renewed my subscription since the free month. Does not seem worth it in its current state.

With all the timing and resources that went into this game, this is one of the biggest letdown games in history if you ask me. Spending all that money on voice acting doesnt mean anything if the gameplay and content are nothing special. Any unbiased fan that has played the game would agree that this game brings NOTHING new to the MMO genre. And the silly space battles get old after, 20 minutes or so.

You have, of course, to create an undeletable Origin account before trying it... And then get e-mails from the unremovable subscription to the EA mailing list...Thanks but I'll pass!

they haven't ironed out a lot of the bugs that were around since beta such the fps issue. some high-end rigs (2600k 580gtx) are getting like 3fps in wz while others are reporting smooth rates using a c2d and 8800gt. this is great though for people wanting to make sure it works on their systems. if it works, then sweet. if it doesn't, you didn't lose a dime. everyone wins.

@Kane04 probably because they know there will be a certain amount of people who play other MMORPGs signing up for the trial just to troll the game. there is only 85 comments int this topic and the majority are trolls.

Chat restrictions are a bit idiot aren't they? Why the hell can't they use general chat? How are they spouse to try it out with all this nonsense? It's like "you can make love, but, no kissing no hugging no noises no hip thrust what so ever"

Almost every game looks good before release, but only after you actually play it can you say if you like it or not. Anyway, TOR fanboys only care about it not being KotOR 3, but an MMO and don't really give a damn about it being compared to WoW, Guild Wars or other stuff.

Skiveron
Skiveron

I like how all the lightsaber drolling star wars fanboys are calling everyone who criticizes this game WoW fanboys where there is ONLY ONE pro-wow post in this entire thread. Just because people criticize a game does not mean they like its competition, not a hard concept to understand. I do agree though you shouldn't say how awesome Guild Wars 2 is going to be when its not even public beta yet. Remember, Swtor also looked good before release.

Poor Bioware, scrambling to get players into their rapidly failing single player MMO before Guild Wars 2 shows up and renders it obsolete and irrelevant.

I started a new character, an Imperial Agent, after my Sith Marauder finally reached level 50 and earned the Darth title. It's only been a couple days (if that) and my Imperial Agent (Operative now), who is specced for heals, has reached level 16 and I haven't even been playing as much as I could, considering that it's finals week for me. Anyway, I welcome any new players to this awesome game and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Nice it will keep me occupied this weekend but doubt it will be enough to drag me in I mean stopping us at 15? Every mmo fan knows that the game doesn't start 30.

I think its a good idea, People want to try/demo stuff out its like a car :P you want to ride in it and make sure the seat fits to your bum just right and the cup holders aren't to small to fit that Ugga-Jug monster drink from 711. I have subscribed and yeah from what we got out of the box, 15 a month seemed a bit high but as they have continued to add more and more things to do I find nothing beats a lazy Tuesday after work than a little MMO Star Wars. As per other folks their opinion is all their own, but I am fine right where I am. And if anyone else gives it a go and enjoys it for the free weekend cool. Its a free weekend, nothing wrong with a test drive. Specially as it doesn't mean you have to buy ;)

@JasPlun I can run SWTOR on 1.5 year old laptop. CPU: AMD Turion II P520 2.3 GHz dual-core GPU: Integrated ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 256 - 1405 MB shared MEMORY: 4 GB DDR3 OS: Window 7 64-bit You know a real up-to-date, top of the line Gaming computer. /sarcasm

BuBsay
BuBsay

I played it for a month and had a good deal of fun with it. Now is it worth $15 a month? No, but it has the potential to be with a few patches. But with more and more F2P MMO's popping up it's going to be hard for subscription based ones to sustain themselves. Hell, even the monstrous overlord of all MMO's is starting to fall apart.

kirbymaster5

@Drke I know man, 3 months in Blizzard was shaking in their boots and started handing out free trials in a final act of desperation. Pff, it will take Bioware 8 years to resort to that.

DrkeX

WoW trolls are out in full force today. Guess what, WoW is awful too.. did you see their new scroll of ressurection? practically BEGGING quitters to return and get a free level 80. MMOs in General are going downhill.

Black_Tribi
Black_Tribi

I don't play this anymore. I'll give them my money when it'll be worth it. This move shows that they're becoming desperate and are loosing subs fast! Like Brunorr said, this is not a good sign.

JasPlun
JasPlun

Next time Bioware and EA make a game that will run on many machines instead of the most up to date systems and you might have had a hell of a lot more subs. The biggest reason WoW has so many subs is the game will run on just about any computer. That allowed Blizzard to reach many people and in this recession there are probably millions of people who have not upgraded their PC's.

I'm really enjoying TOR...I have 2 capped chars and growing. Its not the greatest mmo by any means but not as bad as many people say. I hear so many people say gw2 is gonna be the new wow but so many games have claimed that and turned out to not even come close to the hype. I look forward to see if its true or just another mmo that promises everything and fails to deliver.

@Philly1UPer Warcraft is facing it's own exodus. F2P to level 20 is a good indication that the game took a shot in the ass. Didn't Blizzard just layoff people? Give it a few months after the release of GW2 and it'll be F2P as well.

Wasn't the beta a free2play weekend? And the pre-launch was free2play. Did I buy it? Yes and well worth the money. Will this free2play weekend bring more players on board? Hope so. Free Trials have always been a mainstay of PC Gaming so this should not be such a big surprise.

Unfallen_Satan
Unfallen_Satan

I am surprised this hasn't happened sooner. SWTOR is a new game, and limited trial lets prospective players check out what they are getting into. It's not an indication that the game is going FTP or even that it's doing worse than expected. It's just a good practice.

Runock
Runock

Actually a smart play. There are many gamer's out there on the fence about this one, curious about the story elements but turned off by the similarity to WoW.

@miked79 Another fool jumping on the bandwagon. Population on most servers is heavy and full right now.So ya...ignorant.

silentkillah
silentkillah

Free in a month? You guy's are out of your mind. This is a trial "WEEKEND". Just the weekend. Not a 14 day trial, not a 30 day trial. Just to open some doors to players who thought, "Hey, maybe I'll give TOR a try". This game is far from dead. The playerbase is still healthy. While I do agree they released too many servers and some of those are growing thin, there are tons of populated servers with lot's of player's still playing. This won't even come close to free-to-play for a year. Thanks kiddies.

Spacemancer
Spacemancer

@brunorr Why? Because they want players on the fence to either not buy or buy the game? Trials help those players decide whether or not they'll like the game, and it's hard to come up with ways to give trials of MMOs because of the very nature of the game itself. That is of course you knew this article is about them making a trial and not them making the whole game F2P.

lol itll be free to play in a month. Thats what they get for releasing such garbage. I love how when u get more then 10 ppl fighting each other, the game cant handle the stress , so just disconnects half the raid lol

Not enough to get me to join, not when I could join a different MMO out there for free to play (as of now) permanently.
