Star Wars: The Old Republic adding PvP space combat

Player-vs-Player space combat coming to free-to-play MMO through upcoming Galactic Starfighter expansion; available beginning December 3.

Nearly two years after launch, Star Wars: The Old Republic will add Player-vs-Player space combat through the Galactic Starfighter expansion set to launch in December, BioWare has announced.

In addition to 12v12 space battles, the free Galactic Starfighter expansion features new starships, a "wide set" of customization and upgrade options, multiple battle zones, and new gameplay modes.

Active Star Wars: The Old Republic subscribers will be offered early access to Galactic Starfighter starting on December 3, while the content will be available for preferred status players (those who purchase anything from the online store) beginning on January 14.

The Galactic Starfighter expansion will be offered for all other players last, starting on February 4, 2014.

"Galactic Starfighter will be a deep experience that will continue to grow over time," BioWare Austin general manager Jeff Hickman said in a statement. "We can't wait for both our current and new players to get their hands on it soon."

[CORRECTION] An earlier version of this story failed to mention that Star Wars: The Old Republic already had PvP. GameSpot regrets the error.

What the hell is this?  SWTOR already had PvP.  Eddie Makuch is really begging for hits, even if the hits are only so people can tell him that PvP was already in game and that his title is grossly misleading.

I don't sign in to Gamespot often, but I had to for this. Probably obvious by now, and I don't even play SW:TOR anymore. But it's had PVP since the beginning, amazing PVP actually. This article title is misleading, and this editor does this a lot. It's a blatant attention grab.

Would you look at that, another Eddie Makuch article with a misleading title.

I wish I could say I was surprised.

It's nice to see space flight done better, though I would have liked to see something akin to Star Wars Galaxies. Actually that model was on the original list of promises Bioware made in early development back when this game looked good.

Nice Ill have to try out the star-ship pvp battles when it comes out sounds pretty awesome.

The more I see these articles, the more I see what people have been saying about Eddie as an editor. PVP is NOT new to SW:ToR, but space combat PVP IS. Get your shit straight.

So many times its like he's just rushing so quickly to publish an article that he doesn't even think before-hand.

Sweet. I've taken a break from the game but have been itching to come back. I've been on and off since the start. Love the game, just not enough time in the world to really keep up with it.

WTS Fact Checking. :) TOR has always had PVP. It's an extremely active community, too. I'm not a hardcore PVP'er by any means, but some of my guildies are and we've been in warzones at 3 AM and the queue pops almost instantly. The new PVP arenas launched last week are also a ton of fun.

As others have said, it's the off-the-rails space combat PVP that's going to be a new feature. Subscribers get it in December. F2P get it in February. Think of it like X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, only multiplayer. Can't wait!

F2P with every single feature locked down. I played for about a month and was annoyed by the constant harassment of trying to get me to subscribe. Rift is much better at F2P because I don't feel like I'm being held down when I'm not subscribed.

"Star Wars: The Old Republic adding PvP combat"

Really?  I've been playing since launch and I'm pretty sure it already has PVP combat.

i was going to buy this as soon as it came out but i will just wait til february as i was only going to play it for a few weeks anyways. i had fun with my time in ToR and space combat was on the top of my list of things i wanted. i didn't want on rails space combat at all.

It always makes me laugh when people say this game is dead. Just go ahead and login, the game is so very far from dead. It's not difficult to find groups, PVP is ALWAYS extremely active, you see a lot of people out in the worlds doing their own thing, and since going f2p Bioware has added a ton of new content to the game including one expansion pack, this upcoming ship PVP expansion, and at least half a dozen new quest lines.

To the people who are interested in playing again but don't know if the community is that active, I can assure you it is. There are those idiots out there who believe that a game is dead when it goes f2p. Just ignore them. They don't know what they're talking about.

This article needs re-titling. PvP is not new to ToR, the space element of it is.

The title acts as if the game never had PvP in any form to begin with. I guess a lot of of people don't care enough about the game to notice, but still...

WeWerePirates

Kind of strangely worded. TOR had PvP from day one. What's new is the star fighter game.

TOR's PvP was actually pretty sweet but the match making has always been foul (not cross server, no matching by rank to begin with). Lack of variety of maps didn't help either but the actual combat mechanics were awesome.

WHAT?! Instead of giving us this crap, they should give us OFFLINE SINGLEPLAYER SO I CAN play a nice rpg game that's not mass effect or fallout! THUMB this up if you want OFFLINE! LET'S start a petition for offline or protest for it!

@Omega_726 Indeed the way he posted it makes it seem like Swtor never had PVP, in general, and that the latter will be added with this update! This is stupid and arguably retarded. having that said , PVP starship fights sound weird and interesting at the same time.I am curious to see how this is going to turn out

@BuBsay I swear he does it on purpose. Then he sits back with his co-workers and laughs at all of us raging about it.

@Spartan-1657 I agree, when i first read the title of the article I was thinking that makes no sense they had PVP since the game was released.

Auriken

@ecs33 Every one of the features being locked down hasn't been a thing for a while now. They relaxed it a lot.

I left the game shortly before it was F2P. Will I still be able to use my old lvl 40 toon if I log in now or how does this work exactly? (I had a ton of items in storage and so on)

Or must I start a new avatar from scratch, regardless of my old link to the game?

Willie_Dynamite
Willie_Dynamite

@Auriken Here here!  The dry spell for new content has been over for a long time now.  The new 4v4 PVP's are surprisingly fun, especially the lowbie 4v4 PVP aside from all the Operations (with 2 news ones that were added recently).

@Korvus85 I actually think they did F2P pretty well compared to most. Having the entire game (play wise) is pretty smart. Only bummer I think is the quest reward issue. Played LOTRO for a while but then my wife and I hit the paywall (no new content without money). That's the real bummer.

@LoganDaDestroya I know, it's kind of weird when I put more thought and research in my own forum posts and comments than a gaming news article.

@ghostwarrior79 I play mostly solo.  Pretty close to offline.  But I like Flashpoints and PvP as well.  You can finish your characters quest line without ever having to group.

@jonmar @BuBsay I would say its on purpose, except the omission of "space" comes up three times. The title, the article blub, and the first paragraph. I think he really just dropped the ball on this one.

@Samuz I believe so i left for 2 month and just logged back in after a big patch download LOL and worked fine, so i thinking you can

Willie_Dynamite

@Samuz You will still have your characters, although you may have been forcibly moved to another server during one of the server consolidations.  You may have to rename your characters but they are still there.

korvus

@Sefrix Hmm, really?

Only 1 crew skill.

No Bank.

Can only have 200k credits.

Can't use chat.

Can't send emails.

Only 2 char slots.

No Operations.

Cannot equip most purple items.

Lower exp rate (which is not the end of the world but still...)

Cannot equip event rewards.

Only 3 space missions a week...

And these are just the ones I know by heart...all this on a game that offers a lot less to subscribers than other games that are entirely F2P...

I'd call it a bad F2P model...

But yes, I'm sure there are worse models, just none that I've ever played =)

Auriken
Auriken

@Sefrix @Korvus85 DDO is exactly the same way as LOTRO unfortunately. Actually I think it's worse. People think that SWTOR has the worst f2p model. It doesn't by a long shot.

pongley

@Kisalon @ghostwarrior79 Taking it offline would be pretty stupid, especially as they'd have to redo half the quests for solo playing. They just need to lighten up on the F2P restrictions.

I see, thank you. What about my ingame gear/items and money? Freebie accounts don't have that much room I heard.

@OmegaGear Yep, they admitted they screwed up and showed appreciation for the people who stuck with them.

OmegaGear
OmegaGear

@Korvus85 @OmegaGear Yeah, I lost on those coins too. I saw no reason to sub for a month just to be able to claim them and use on vanity items. SE is sticking to its subscription guns with FFXIV, but at least they showed some respect to its legacy players that supported them through the 1.0 nightmare, and gave them a reduced sub rate with 40 characters.

korvus
korvus

@OmegaGear Yeah, I understand. I'm playing Guild Wars 2 and I think they nailed microtransactions perfectly though.

Another thing that pissed me off about TOR is that I subbed until it turned "F2P" and for that I got at least 4 emails saying "anybody who subbed for any period of time before the F2P transition will get awarded Cartel Coins for their support. You will recieve the coins regardless of your subscription status" What they failed to mention is that yes I did get the coins even without an active subscription but even though they're on my account I cannot use them without an active subscription. Another FU from EA =P

OmegaGear
OmegaGear

@Korvus85 @Sefrix Its def a F2P model that has a lot of restrictions that are annoying. I think the issue a lot of these games have are that they're coming from subscription models to F2P models, and it can be hard to determine how to properly transition it without "pissing off" the people that subscribed, or continue to.

MMOs that are F2P from the start have one goal, and only one thing to worry about, making as much money as possible with a money shop full of digital goods. Most of these games accomplish this with ridiculous gear enhancement systems and vanity items, and that's where sub > F2P runs into a problem.

Most sub mmos don't have gear enhancement models that fit with F2P cash shops, and to try to change to that model simple doesn't work with existing game balance for combat. So, they have to turn to other things, and for whatever reason, the companies always seem to land on content and feature restriction. Why this is always the route they take, I do not know, but I can honestly say, true F2P mmos never have such things. I think thats where we lose as the gamers. F2P mmos want to make money. Sub mmos forced to go F2P want to just pressure you into subbing anyways, and now has the excuse to also offer the same cash shop.

korvus

@01PartialArtist Thank you. Nowadays people seem incapable to disagree with people's point of view without being confrontational about it...

korvus
korvus

@sammoth My complain is not that "not everything is available for free". It's their game, I don't think it''s worth the sub, I don't pay for it anymore.

What I'm against is the 5 emails I would get from them a month until I removed myself from the mailing list advertising that the game was F2P and that I would be able to play the game "however I wanted and could purchase extras on their store" which is not the least bit accurate. The game is a demo at most, which happens to have the most single player parts unlocked.

Also, I cancelled my auto-renewal subscription with 15 days remaining and they gave me a big fat "FU, we didn't want you here anyway" by denying me access to the forum to say goodbye to my friends even though I was still a paying costumer for another 2 weeks; which is the requirement to be able to have access to the forums, an active subscription not an auto-renewal.

@sammoth @Korvus85

Well if you read his comment properly you would realise he expects some features available a la every other f2p mmo. This is more akin to prison. How you managed to reach "get everything" is astonishing. It's called straw-manning and it's downright sleazy.

"I would like to see a few sensible features available."

"what's that you want everything for free!?"

sammoth
sammoth

@Korvus85 @Sefrix You get what you pay for. If you want the better experience you have to pay for upgrades or Sub. WTF did you expect get everything without sub ?

OmegaGear
OmegaGear

@pongley @Kisalon @ghostwarrior79 I don't think they have to redo any of the main storyline quests, just the optional ones. True, that's content to rebalance, but I'd also assume an offline version of this game would have npc party members, just like KotOR.

pongley
pongley

@Riddick123 @pongley @Kisalon @ghostwarrior79 I didn't say remove the store or subscription did I? The game in its current state is not free 2 play, that implies that the game is in a condition where it is possible to play the game without paying anything but the full experience requires either a subscription for full access or purchasing individual items.
As it is the game doesn't let you revive unless you purchase revive packs.
