Star Wars: Battlefront Launch Not Tied to Episode 7; EA Would "Prefer" It Be Close

It will have things that relate to the new movie, but Battlefront is "more rooted in the traditional Star Wars universe."

The launch of the next game in the Star Wars: Battlefront series is not directly tied to that of the next Star Wars film, Episode VII. That said, EA says it would "prefer" for the release of the two to be close to one another.

During a call with investors yesterday, EA was asked about the effect a delay of Episode VII could have on Battlefront. Referencing what little of the game has been shown so far, EA Studios executive VP Patrick Söderlund said, "[Y]ou know what we're building is more rooted in the traditional Star Wars universe, and not so much necessarily linked to the movies being made. And that's just because we wanted to make a game that celebrated the history of Star Wars."

Battlefront won't ignore everything from Episode VII, though; Söderlund said, "Obviously, there will be things in there somewhat tied to the new movie." Not much has been officially revealed about the movie, which will take place 30 years after Return of the Jedi and features some returning characters.

As for when Battlefront will launch, Söderlund explained, "I wouldn't say we have a particular tie to the movie. Now, obviously, we would prefer to be close to the movie, but I wouldn't say we're directly tied to it."

Episode VII is scheduled for release on December 18, 2015. Battlefront, which is in the works at Battlefield and Mirror's Edge developer DICE, does not yet have a release date. As part of a showing at E3 last month that offered some brief glimpses of early work on the game--watch it above--EA announced we'd "see more" from the game next spring.

Not being tied directly into the release of Episode VII is good news, at least in theory, for the quality of Battlefront. When licensed games are released to coincide with a movie, their quality can suffer as a result of being rushed out the door--a criticism leveled at Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark, which launched during the same week as Transformers: Age of Extinction.

Battlefront is just one of at least two Star Wars games EA has in the works, the other being a title from Dead Space developer Visceral Games that is rumored to be an open-world title. EA signed a multiyear deal to produce Star Wars games in 2013.

i think they should just do the episode 7 stuff as a dlc and focus on what they know people want right now. I want to be able to tie a cable around a camel and then fly into space and contribute to taking out a star destroyer seamlessly. if they can give me this, its a day 1 buy for me.

I never thought it had any relation as a tie-in to Episode 7 and they've stated before that releasing it close to the movie's release is a win-win for both parties, since the attention for one feeds the attention of the other. The game looks really good, but it's so far off right now.

I am obligated to leave a EA sucks! comment here

Hopefully it doesn't get pushed into 2016. Really want this game.

An open world/semi-open world star wars RPG in the vein of Mass Effect or KOTOR.

Oooooh, my loins feel all tingly just thinking about it.

@isshiah A lot of people here say "EA sucks" and "die already EA", but not me. I say: EA, have someone make an open world/semi-open world star wars RPG in the vein of Mass Effect or KOTOR, then you have my permission to die.

I am glad Battlefront is not based too much on Episode VII. If VII become a hit that inspires a new generation of gamers, EA can always make expansions or even sequels focused on it, but even if VII blows, the many millions of Star Wars fans will remain true to what they've loved for decades.

I am actually more interested in this other open world game from Visceral. There are a lot of expectation for Battlefront, but Visceral's game could be the black horse Star Wars RPG fans have been waiting since KOTOR II, or 1 if you didn't like 2, or forever if the new game has an open enough world.

I like the idea that the new movies take place in a different universe to the "traditional Star Wars universe".

I may actually nerd rage if this game launches as buggy as BF4.

blackothh
blackothh

@gokartmozart89 it will, and it will also have server issues in the first week, because EA forgets everything about all previous games that they have made when they make a new one.

Aaronp2k

@blackothh @gokartmozart89 seems like your wrong since they said they delayed battlefield hardline because they don't want a repeat of the battlefield 4 launch. keeping in mind that dice said this, and they are the dev team behind battlefront also. ea know they made a lot of mistakes the past decade, like the whole situation with sim city when it released for example. they know they need to get their act together because of the amount of hate surrounding them now. if they don't then I have a feeling ubisoft is going to become better than ea which 10 years ago I never would have seen coming.

The only "traditional star wars universe" I'm interested in is Knights of the old Republic III. Single player not that MMO crap.

@Deadlysyns87 @deadpen Unfortunately, however I can see why they did this and it makes sense, rewrite EU, but don't mess with the movies.

hystavito

@DarkSaber2k While it may not be strictly timed to coincide with the movie release, they must have somewhat planned on it, it's just so much better for marketing and raising general awareness.  So maybe :).

@DarkSaber2k I would like to put extra "likes" on this comment for the clever reference!

As long as they don't mix Disney characters in the game...Boba Fett fighting Donald Duck....  Kingdom Star Wars?    I need to take a nap.. LOL.

Poodger
Poodger

@lawson_raider Disney and Star Wars have gotten along well together long before Disney acquired it. The fantastic Star Wars ride at Disneyland that has been around for decades is a testament to that. People need to stop worrying about Disney... they will treat it right.

Aaronp2k
Aaronp2k

@Poodger @lawson_raider I agree. I mean star wars always kind of felt like a universe disney could have made themselves. it has that sprinkle of adventurous magic that a lot of disney franchises also have, and it was never that violent. the only violent scenes I can recall is on a new hope were obi wan chops that aliens arm off and of course the bit were luke's hand gets cut off. Even then there wasn't much blood in the arm being cut off, and no blood when luke's hand got cut off at all (I think they were a bit ballsy on a new hope and cut the violence down a bit as the franchise became more popular). I think disney will nail episode 7. We all know it won't suck as much as episode 1 did anyway. I just hope they don't bring back jar jar binks.

@Rayzakk hahaha im thinking the same thing ... but still, its battlefront :D Its the first game i played online with a friend off mine :D flying around in space or being a jedi and just slaughter every one :D

Fartman7998

I see no good reason why this game should not be incredible.  That being said, DICE is not known for their technical prowess (a.k.a. lack of bugs in games), so we have reason to be concerned I suppose.

At this point, assuming they learn from other developers' past mistakes, I think this might be the Star Wars game we've been waiting for.  I can only hope that the gameplay holds up and it's not "thirteen year old with a foul-mouth" friendly

FakeMythology
FakeMythology

@Fartman7998 My god I hope it is great. I've played a lot of DICE games battlefield 1942 to Battlefield 3. EA picked the right studio to make this continuation of the best multi-player star wars game. Admittedly though DICE has bugs sometimes they usually fix them pretty quickly though and non are game killers. I am 100% a DICE fanboy so take what I say with a grain of salt. If this game becomes what I hope it becomes I'll be playing it for years.

Restivus
Restivus

So this game will present only familiar environments and experiences, no Star War 1313. Did the last movies stink so much that they need to appeal to a spurned fan base?

For many gamers this is the equivalent of the Jedi Mind Trick "this is not the Star Wars game you are looking for."

Poodger
Poodger

@Restivus I want Battlfront 3 more than Star Wars 1313 myself. This is exactly the Star Wars game I am looking for.

Mr_AJ

@Restivus  The best bet would be for the Amy Henning game to be something like 1313, basically Uncharted: Star Wars.

ohhh yeah there is nothing better than to prey on the marketing expense of the other super-corporations.

Buying this Digital Deluxe, with all the DLC later, Season Pass if it happens. Weapon packs, map packs, everything. I'm making an exception here. While I hate myself for this, I'll do it, because Star Wars, my favourite movie franchise. I'm doing it only for you, Star Wars. Love you.

Thanatos2k

@RC-Sev People need to stop saying "Because it's Star Wars."  Star Wars has really been run into the ground over the last 15 years, why are people so loyal?

@arrow2thekneeXD Idk Star Wars might be to important to mess with seriously they are already a hated company it might terrify them to anger gamers and Star Wars fans.

Can't wait to play as some stormies, they are awesome even with the "they have terrible accuracy"(blame the movies for that because the characters can't die, not that I wanted them to).

@jollyboy00 @Smosh150 lol yea, friggin physics were hilarious too, It was always a challenge between my friends in myself was to see how long we could keep the "heroes" afloat even after their health had run out.

Smosh150
Smosh150

@Karmazyn @Smosh150 They had them in BF2 so prob so, that was a lot of fun actually, their weaponry was hilarious with those blue orbs. Was always fun getting about 4 of them with one thermal detonator and watch them go flying.

@jollyboy00 @Smosh150 and myself* that mistake sounds really creepy now that I re-read it.

Aaronp2k

@Karmazyn @Smosh150 I sort of hope so too. It would be so great to just stamp on them with a robot camel. sweet revenge for all the annoying times I had to put up with jar jar when playing anything related to episode 1 or of course when watching the film.
