Star Citizen funding hits $44 million milestone

With Arena Commander just around the corner, Star Citizen crowdfunding is still going strong.

Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts’ Star Citizen has just reached yet another funding milestone. The game’s widely successful crowdfunding campaign has now raised a staggering $44 million, up from $43 million in late April.

In a letter to the community, Roberts said that his team is hard at work on Arena Commander, a small, multiplayer-focused dogfighting mode that should launch on May 29. “Getting to dogfight in deep space is going to make Star Citizen real for a lot of people,” Roberts said. “But I also know that everyone who has supported us to this point already understands. Thank you for getting us here!”

To mark the occasion, Roberts shared a piece of concept art for what he calls the “negotiation room,” a place in one of the games’ ships where traders can meet with other players, display their cargo, and make deals.

All backers who contributed to Star Citizen before this point will get an additional “Stellar Cartography” room added to their hangers once the modular room system launches. This room will serve as a kind of map, featuring a 3D holographic representation of the game’s universe that will get more detailed as you explore it.

Roberts revealed that If Star Citizen hits $46 million in funding, backers will get an updated scanning software suite, which could provide them with information on where to find resources.

Star Citizen is due to launch in full sometime in 2015. A total of 453,429 people have backed the project so far.

Money grabbing, nothing more than that.

With this amount of money they can make several games.  Hope this game lives up to the hype.

Will Star Citizen have deep-space travel? As a long time Freelancer player, this is probably the most important feature.

Wow, it looks like some people have pledged $15,000 for this game.  I can't imagine paying that much for a game.  It looks like you can buy it for $30 now, which is probably less than half of what they will charge at launch.  I wonder if the game will require a monthly fee.  If it is $60-80 with no monthly fee, I'll probably pick it up.  Wing Commander was one of my favorite games.

The fanboyism on this thread is really sad. So many people just cannot take any criticism of their beloved imaginary game. Aww.

With 44$ million it better be literally the best f*cking game of all time and history every where forever!

Or it's going to be the biggest let down ever to many people.

Can someone please explain the hype over this? Is it really based off a 20 year old game Gamespot doesn't even have a review for?

Oh I can't wait until this game comes out and shuts up all the jealous haters, this and Elite Dangerous with OR are going to make me so damn happy, I love space and lately I've been picking up games like Space Engineers (great game btw, msg me to friend me if you play too) and my love for space games has grown, if that was even possible.

So the average donation is over $100, multiplied by 450,000+ people? How can we have children starving in the streets of Detroit right now? Our culture is seriously messed up.

@daikkenaurora12 Considering they are making a single player game with 50+ branching story line missions, PLUS a fully featured MMO with a persistent universe and the ability to make private servers with built in mod tools...it basically is several games.

screecwe
screecwe

@ahalverson Basically, yes. The systems will be VERY big, with a very small percentage of them being well traveled. Exploration is the most, or at least tied for the most, extensive part of this game. When CIG did a poll asking players what they wanted to do, the majority said exploration. This surprised them as they had assumed it would be dogfighting. The poll caused them to divert a lot more assets into making this game exploration friendly.

screecwe

@thejollyroger25 They've said the retail price will be $60. And as ahalverson has said, there is no monthly fee.

@CruiserCaptain  - One thing you have to remember about a game that is crowdfunded is there is NO requirement to hit a release date, meet the requirements of producers, etc, because there is no producers besides Chris Roberts himself.

He's said time and again this game comes out when it's READY, and not a minute earlier.  if that's two years from now, it's two years from now.

@bobbo888 Saying this is based off of a 20 year old game, is like saying Titanfallis based off of Wolfenstein 3D.

hypre1

@bobbo888 basically its because the genre is being reborn by one of the people who was one of the major space sim developers when this genre was last in its prime.

people who played his games then now have a lot more disposable income and he is promising them the game they they dreamed of when they played his previous titles.

Combined with the fact that this game is the dream game of CR, the man in charge and the whole team seem really passionate about the genre and the game, its sort of infectious to see how much they love the game and want it to succeed.

Damnation_6
Damnation_6

@bobbo888 It's not based on a 20 year old game, all Chris Roberts bring is his experience in making the Wingcommander series and Freelancer and the like.

The "hype" is about the following. Some people have been craving a new AAA space sim. And not only are we getting it we're getting a say in it and we don't have to fear the publisher canceling the game of what now.

Yes it has risks but so far they have been keeping the community informed and there is a strong SC community even before the game comes out.

Have doubts? Just sit back and wait for it to release and when it does look into if this game is something for you or not. But SC is a nice opportunity to follow game development even if you don't pledge.

In short; people want a game, they can follow development every step and they will be able to playtest and influence development. So that is what the hype is about.

@Gladestone1  "Why dont you guys learn about the game" is a very good comment but "Can earn every ship in the single player game" is not. The single player game Squadron 42 is a military campaign and you won't own any ships. You can however buy any ship in the multiplayer, persistent universe, Star Citizen with in game currency. But I'm sure that's what you meant to say..

@jimmy_russell Wow such an ignorant comment. How does the situation of a video game have any relation to whats happening in Detroit? ill tell you it has 0% relation and you thinking because the people have the money to support a video game that they should instead do something with starvation and homeless in Detroit is a misguided and just downright dumb reasoning.

@Damnation_6 Thank you very much for your constructive criticism, it's hard to come by these days. I never had any doubts; I LOVE games that have to do with space... bobbo888
bobbo888

@naz99 @bobbo888 This is why I hate gamers. Get over yourself man I asked a question, if you can't answer it why are you here commenting? I have looked into it, I've seen images, I've read that you give your money away for a space ship you can't even use until the game is released over a year from now (yes, I know about arena commander so don't even mention it). I've been following the hype. I'm interested in the game. Why do you have to be a prick about it? Can you not answer a simple question without getting snotty?

bobbo888
bobbo888

@naz99 @Gladestone1 It's funny because I didn't do anything to put people down. I asked a question about the game and you tried to shut ME down. I never bad talked. @soccerpzn @jimmy_russell Detroit is only grazing the surface of the problem. The big issue is that people have their heads so far up their collective asses that they can't form a reasonable course of action to fixing the problems. Instead the throw their money and time into escapist entertainment because the real world is "depressing" and requires too much "effort" to fix.

bobbo888
bobbo888

@jeager_titan @jimmy_russell why is it all or nothing with you gamers? He makes a great, pertinent point and you shut him down indefinitely. He's definitely right in a sense, gamers have their heads so far up their asses they can't see or care about what's going on in the world. Only what's going on in their virtual world. Buncha bullies... I know you don't have any REAL LIFE satisfaction, but that doesn't mean you should put someone down for having an opinion.

jimmy_russell
jimmy_russell

@jeager_titan @jimmy_russell I donated $500 to the Red Cross every year now for over a decade! I'm outraged that you can't see the problem here, it's incredibly selfish of people to think that this deserves their money before it is complete when there's pertinent issues that humanity faces and require our immediate attention.

andrew_ribbons
andrew_ribbons

@trallisit It is a sad truth that less than half of that will actually go into development of the game.  That is why Chris R is steering well clear of Publishers, because they spend all the budget on marketing and shovelling crap to the public (mostly), and leave very little to the developers to actually make the game as it should be!  Here, 99.8% of that money is going to funding the wages of the developers, the costs of the offices owned by Cloud Imperium, and the resources and talents of so many wonderful people and 3rd parties.

This game is most likely going to be the best game to reach PC gaming, as a dedicated and wholly independant title, in a decade.

The people have most definitely spoken!

andrew_ribbons

@bobbo888 @naz99 "I've read that you give your money away for a space ship you can't even use until the game is released over a year from now (yes, I know about arena commander so don't even mention it)."  Urm...any contradiction much?  For a ship you can't use until over a year, oh, apart from that software being released later this week?  I see. :P

Darkwalker75
Darkwalker75

@bobbo888

He actually has a very good point.

Your comment sounds like you have a significant, if not complete, lack of knowledge and understanding of what the article is actually about.

No you didnt ask a question, you asked 2 questions, and while the first might have been an honest one, the second one is a question you would have known the answer to had you bothered to find out what the article was about in the first place, especially since you claim you have both been following it and are interested in it.

Instead of instantly getting hostile towards people when they respond, you should take some time to understand why they respond as they do, in this case the questions asked was based on your questions which sounded like you could not even be bothered to even find out what the article was about, but were just looking to talk nonsense without any real knowledge.

So my advice to you is to first do at least some basic research, and if you have questions, take some time to think over what you want to ask and how to pose the questions to avoid situations like this.

Darkwalker75
Darkwalker75

@bobbo888

No its not based of a 20 year old game, its about a completely new game in a genre that publishers said was dead 10 years ago.

And the ype as you call it are just excitement from sci-fi fans who has been waiting and hoping for a good space sim for the past 10 years, but have been ignored by greedy publishers who are just looking to milk players for money with half baked products.

So its no wonder people are highly excited about the game considering its being created by the person, Chris Roberts, who literally created the genere and are now making the game of his dreams, as well as the dreams of allot of sci -i fans.

bobbo888

Darkwalker75

@jimmy_russell @soccerpzn

And you are conveniently ignoring the fact that these $44 million are keeping over 200 people with jobs, jobs which in turn generates taxes and income for the government. money which can be used to help those in need that you talk about.

It not our fault that the government spend the money on high salaries and paid dinners at expensive restaurants rather than use it on the poor and needy.

Why don't you go complain to the government about their spending's first, before you complain about how a tiny fraction(0,009%) of the worlds population spend their hard earned money.

MegamanX97
MegamanX97

@jimmy_russell I am one of the lucky few to make decent money in my 20's. The taxes that come off me for supporting social assistance and welfare, not to mention unemployment that I have never claimed, but never get a tax break on, I feel is more than enough to support people in need. Maybe the government should throw less of our tax money into their yearly income and put that in to the community? So what if these guys want to support a game by throwing money at it. In the end their money is keeping people their jobs and off the street? Correct!?

soccerpzn
soccerpzn

@jimmy_russell @soccerpzn What do you think entertainment is? all i am getting from you is that entertainment is bad because people will be distracted from real world situations. In that case i hope you never spent a single dime when it came to entertainment or you might be seen as a hypocrite.

bfeinberg
bfeinberg

@Darkwalker75 @bobbo888  Seriously, why is this fool even here? A gaming website by its very nature more than likely has people on it that like to spend money on games. I guess we aren't allowed to spend our money on things we want. We have to give it all away to charity. Bobbo, tell you what, you first.

Darkwalker75
Darkwalker75

@bobbo888

And by the way, if you are as easily offended as you seemed to be by the response to your first comment, then perhaps you would be better off not using the internet at all.

And calling people names and telling them to "f*** off" as you say is a sure fire way to not get people to listen to you and in the worst case, banned for insulting and offending people.

If you feel someone is insulting or offending you, best thing you can do is flag their post and not respond to it.

Darkwalker75
Darkwalker75

@bobbo888 @Darkwalker75

Apparently my reply to your first post is only visible to me, for some reason its still pending.

This site has a weird habit of doing that with the first post I make every time I log in.

He told you where to find information about the game and asked you a simple question. and you instantly turned hostile on him.

I have reposted it, in two parts, that seems to have sorted the issue.

Hopefully you will better understand why you get these responses.

bobbo888
bobbo888

@Darkwalker75 excuse me but if you read the first post I wrote on this thread you would see that HE shunned ME. I asked a simple question and he basically told me to f*** off. You sir can do the same for being ignorant.

Darkwalker75
Darkwalker75

@bobbo888

Funny you should call him a bully since you seem to be the one bullying him with your namecalling, trash talk of his comments and even for his writing.

He gave you an honest answer to your question and you instantly jump the gun, thinking that he is bullying you and then you start calling him names and accusing him of bullying you.

For your information, not everyone speaks perfect Enligsh like you do, some have English as a second or even third language and not everyone has either an easy time learning or had much time to

learn.

Why don't you just take a break and come back when you are ready to start talking to people in a civilized manner?

And @jimmy_russell does not have a great point, he is complaining about how a tiny fraction of the earths population, we are talking about 0.009%, are spending their hard earned money on a little entertainment in their spare time.

Publishers are spending hundreds of millions of dollars on making the next cloned sequel to a game, so if anyone should give to charity it should be them as they have the money to give.

naz99
naz99

@bobbo888 @naz99 @jeager_titan @jimmy_russell A great point?

Ok the  i will do the exact same thing...

"hey why are you learning to drive you would spend money on a car when there are starving kids in ethiopia"

Hey why are you going out to eat at restaraunts what is wrong with this world you should use that money and save kids from wartorn countries"

I could do this with everything every country every activity....it is not a good point.

Stop with the e-bullying crap you seem to be unable to see the difference between actual bullying and a slightly irate forum post...

For your information my keyboard is bust and i have to hammer the keys to make them work so i am not wasting time going back and correcting everything.

Also if you are pointing out my use of the english language for no reason are you not bullying me? going by your logic you are bullying me so please live by your own words and stop being an E-bully.

And finally i am not stalking you i just respond to posts i think are stupid......and it just happens that i am responding to you a lot so..............

Thanks.

@naz99 @bobbo888 @jeager_titan @jimmy_russell I see a problem with your English. Also, why are you stalking my posts now? He didn't put people down. He wasn't even disrespectful. He brings up a great point and because you have no real answer, you hide behind e-bullying.

naz99
naz99

@bobbo888 @jeager_titan @jimmy_russell He is putting people down for buying a game and saying they should put it towards charity instead...yet he is a gamer on here and somebody who spends money on games....so hypocrite much?

For some reason because these people choose to put money on Star Citizen they should be ashamed of themselves and should give money to charity?
You don't see the problem here?

Darkwalker75
Darkwalker75

@jimmy_russell @jeager_titan

Its my money, I worked hard to earn that money, who the hell do you think you are to tell me what I should spend my hard earned money on?

And for your information these money have provided over 200 jobs.

These people now have an income so they afford to have food and send their children to school.

You say you give $500 to Red Cross every year, well I say its not enough.

You should give them at least half your monthly income, and then you must stop buying games, sell your computer, your car and your house and give that money to charity as well instead of telling us what to do.

And on top of that you should to charity work as well helping those in need.

@GarGx1 @jimmy_russell One of the most profitable economies, sure. At the end of the day, that's all that matter to foreign investors: profit. The US economy is lucrative because the people who support it are stupid (sorry for the harsh words America.) But it is no where near the largest. The US population is actually quite small in comparison to many other countries around the world.

GarGx1
GarGx1

@jimmy_russell @jeager_titan  I contributed to Star Citizen because it's a game I want made. Is it selfish? Of course it is.

However people starving in the streets of a city in of one of the richest and largest economies in the world raises much larger issues than can be cured by a paltry $44 million in crowd funding for a game. Perhaps you should be petitioning your' senate or local governors instead?

Incidentally, I also donate to charity.
