Star Citizen Funding Continues to Climb, Reaches New Milestone

The crowdfunding campaign for PC space game Star Citizen continues to soar. Total funding now stands at $110 million, up from $100 million just a few months ago. More than 1.3 million people are now counted as "Star Citizens."

This is the number of people who have signed up to track the game's progress, but not necessarily the number of people who have actually contributed monetarily to the game. Still, it's a big number and all of this has been achieved in the three-plus years since Star Citizen began its crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter in October 2012.

Star Citizen's $110 million is bigger than the budget for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which developer CD Projekt Red estimated to be $81 million. The game is already the most successful crowdfunding project of any kind in history.

It has been a long time coming for Star Citizen. Though some portions of the game are playable right now for backers, the full, finished product isn't. Some fans have been frustrated by the long development. Responding to these concerns earlier this year, creator Chris Roberts admitted he could have done a better job informing backers that, as more money came in, the scope of the project expanded in turn.

"One of the oxymorons of crowdfunding is you're asking for money to make this game, but you don't know how much money you're going to get," he said. "Unless you just want to pocket the rest of the money, which isn't my thing at all; I want to make the best game possible."
