Square Enix site hacked

Publisher suspends Square Enix Members operations after unknown parties accessed one of its servers; no word on whether users' personal data was taken.

by

Membership might not have its privileges after all. Square Enix has temporarily shut down its North American and Japanese Square Enix Members sites in the wake of a possible hack.

Square Enix Members might get an iPod, or they might get their personal data stolen.

"We have reason to believe that unknown parties may have gained unauthorized access to a particular Square Enix server related to the free Square Enix Members service offered in North America and Japan," according to a note from the publisher.

"We are assessing the full extent of this potential breach to determine what data, if any, was compromised and will provide more details as soon as possible. While some personal information may have been accessed, we can confirm that there is no possibility of any credit card information leak from this incident, since the server in question stores no credit card information."

In addition to the site (which serves as a blog for the publisher's products and gathering place for fans), Square Enix Members is a loyalty program where customers who register their games with the site can earn a variety of rewards. Past rewards have included special postcards, a messenger bag, and an engraved 8GB iPod Touch.

Square Enix apologized for the inconvenience and said the site should resume operations in a few days.

If Square Enix has been the victim of hackers, at least the Final Fantasy publisher has plenty of company. Beyond Sony's massive PlayStation Network breach, game makers including Nintendo, BioWare, Eidos Montreal, Bethesda Softworks, and Epic Games have all had their sites hacked this year alone.

If its just their regular site that got hacked than it wont matter, it'll be up in a few days. Now if its gonna affect the FFXI and FFXIV servers...thats another story.

Here is a great example of why an all digital distribution, over the internet gaming future will never truly take over from physical media. Hackers can take down and disrupt such as sevice. Square Enix has some extent of on-line gaming service. With Final Fantasy 11, and Final Fantasy 14. Those on-line MMO FF fans are not able to access their game. This is why an all digital distribution cloud based internet on-line gaming future. Is not such a great idea. I'd be really pissed if I wasn't able to play because of the hackers trying to steal credit card information.

Wow theres a lot of people on here complaining about Enix's games this gen. I thought Deus Ex was a great game (cant judge FF because I don't play the series but Deus was great)...Nevermind I just went onto Enix's website to find other titles and nope...you guys were right they really haven't had any good games this gen (except Deus).

Maybe they don't want to hack activision because they don't wanna get hired by activision :P

I don't think the hackers will be getting so much hate if they hacked Activition. :P

Why would you hack some gaming company's free forums? I don't see the reason. Maybe they are looking to fetch a job with the security there? Hackers hack stuff, then get caught on purpose, then they get hired to tighten security of the stuff they hacked.

@ryzrocks Some of them may do things like this which I disagree with. Trust me though our government needs their talent to defend against advancing cyber aggression from countries like China.

I wish the hackers would hack spam sites instead .... that is if they weren't the ones responsible for creating the spam codes in the first place.

This just what everyone knows and most just don't wanna admit, Internet is not safe enough for deep business, I wonder when companies gonna realize that and stop making stupid large game downloads, and keep dreaming of safety.

my ps fanboy friend said microsoft is doing all these hacks. said they did it to sony and he had to buy a 360 because he wanted to play his games online and he said he hasnt gone back to his ps3 because the graphics are little bit better on 360 lol.... i told him i dont think the graphics are better but i do think the gameplay online is alot smoother and less of a head ache because u dont have to install so much stuff or do a update every other week.

What, Square Enix was offering a service that was free to gamers? How dare they. They should be hacked to teach them a lesson. Like @el3m2tigre said, maybe they'll learn their lesson and charge $60 next time. The nerve.

Square Enix brought this on themselves. The hackers were probably trying to find where FFXIII-Versus went MIA within their database. That game is as evasive as the loch ness monster.

I wish these hackers stop wasting time on good companies and actually start hacking companies that deserve it like Capcom, EA & Activision.

Hacking is really stupid and accomplishes nothing. Why don't you hack oil companies or somthing and release vital info rather than hacking a game company like Enix. Oh thats right you know how to hack but when it comes to reading and understanding vital info your at a loss.

@HollowNinja Nothing on the internet is safe from hackers. They may not get your personal info from GOG, but they can cross reference things very easily and get your personal info from somewhere else.

I really hate these hackers who attack without any reason and are ruining gaming for us gamers just for "teh lulz",as they would say it... Instead of doing this crap, get out of your d@mn basement, get a life, its almost Christmas :P Or if that's too much for you,use your hacking skills for some good at least, like that guy who hacked and patched some annoying bug in Rift some time ago,if I heard right...

Was this really needed? huh!? come on now, we get it, your a bunch of little whiny maggots with far to much free time on your hands and a seemingly insatiable need to be a disruption. This is not amusing, it is a pain in the cornhole to regular folks, and there are MUCH better things one can do to be an annoyance, such as launching yourselves off the nearest tall building.

Talk about a bunch of lifeless desperation. I wouldn't be surprised if this was done by the same people who hijacked all the other networks this article mentioned.
