Square Enix returns to Unreal Engine

Multiple games on the way from Final Fantasy publisher using Epic Games' engine technology.

Square Enix had its first taste of Unreal Engine development in 2008 with the role-playing game The Last Remnant, and now, the publisher is heading back for more.

The Last Remnant was the publisher's first Unreal Engine game.

Epic announced today that Square Enix has licensed the Unreal Engine for multiple games. This news follows Epic's recent opening of a Tokyo branch of its engine support team.

"Many Western games have achieved great success with the Unreal Engine, and this milestone reflects the Japanese development community's trust in our technical prowess," Epic Games Japan territory manager Taka Kawasaki said in a statement.

With the amount of games SE releases on the market that aren't great games, I could see why people who respect squaresoft more then Enix. But a person would wonder if Squaresoft would of done the same thing SE is doing right now.

I dont really like Unreal Engine, to many texture pop-up after loading. i.e. Borderland & Monday Night but at the same time, I a bit relieved, more JRPG for PC!! :D

@John_Read Last Remnant is on PC. All the DLC is included and there was a bunch of rebalancing, too. Plus PCs can actually handle the game while XBox was barely able to get by (notice the pauses on the video every time a spell is cast - those don't happen on PC).

Sad news is S-E wants FFXV to be action rpg.

The Unreal engine has more strengths than weaknesses. If anyone can push it to a new fantastical level, its Square Enix.

TLR was good, but main quests was too long for me, so I'm neutral!

Never liked the visuals of most unreal engine games they're so commonly used especially from the start of this generation.

Square needs to work more on the games' stories. That's what made them the number one on the RPG genre. They just forgot this, unfortunately. Their last games were pretty much the same stuff... with little "makeup" differences.

Hey Square why dont you save your money and spend it all instead getting Hironobu Sakaguchi back so you guys can make good games again.

@loopy_101 Just because they're using UE3 doesn't mean they're going to start chugging out FPSs or something. That makes no sense.

There would be some people who would complain about Square if they found out someone from the company was using their right hand instead of their left to wipe themselves. If this aids in helping them get games out the door then more power to them. It's not like we are forced to buy them..... Hmmm, it's funny how the "armchair game developers" who complain about how Square does things haven't gone out and started their own companies to show them how to do it right, eh? Too much fun sitting behind that laptop or PC blaming someone else, i guess....

I am glad that Square Enix is returning to the Unreal Engine. I played and absolutely loved The Last Remnant. The only thing I did not like is that the PC version look so much better than the 360 version, I played both so I can tell the difference and it is frightening how the graphics quality differs.

I personally find that The Last Remnant was a decent game. Although the UI is console-centric, I still found it to be the only JRPG experience on the PC. I hope they use the March 2011 version of UE3 due to DirectX11.

Please...can you talk about Versus XIII's development instead?

I really hate the Unreal Engine.... :( I find it so un-user friendly to make my own game demo. I can't even know how to make my Static Meshes into Skeletal Meshes and the character designs I have in 3D Studio Max get stuffed up when I try to import them into the UDK. If Epic would just make the UDK a bit more user friendly and have a way for better Character Design instead of this UMV Mapping that they have for most game characters, then that would be an improvement. I have seen Soul Calibur 4 and their custom character designs, and their clothes are not attached stuck onto the skin like the UDK forces me to do in my character designs. I know that I have seen Square Enix do their magic in The Last Reminant, but I personally feel like the engine that they used for some of their other games are allot more better.

@tsunami2311 do not hold your breathe! the only decent games that come out of sqaure anytime in the last DECADE have all been outsourced games and most made by western compaines like Dues Ex 3. Japanese game makers are 10 years behind the Europe and the USA in terms of game design. I am not saying JRPs are dead, but they like 2D side scrolling games, when was the last 2D side scrolling made for consoles. Stuff like Limbo and Shadow complex, and they were 15$ Arcade games, which is where JRPs belong IMO.

Yow, the XBox version of Last Remnant pauses before every cast spell? No wonder people hated it. I do hope Square makes another game with that combat system.

That's odd. I just read about a game engine that was created by Square. I think it was called Luminous engine. Maybe they were crafting that for the next wave of consoles. Either way, I think they save $$ using engines that are already setup , or optimized for the platforms. I think the Batman games have made the best use out of the Unreal tech.. Those games look very impressive. Even better than Gears 3 imo.

RgvXavi
RgvXavi

@Cart: the engine you refer to is going by the name Luminous. The engine itself is still in development by Square which is why, I assume, Square Enix is using UR Engine 3. Unreal Engine 4 is also being developed and I would think they will both be ready for use by the time the next consoles drop.

What the hell happened to that engine they were working on?> It looked amazing from the screenshots. Perhaps it is not designed for the current-gen consoles......

Who knows what kind of game a big company like Square Enix is planning to make with the engine, but the best JRPG of this generation was Unreal-powered: Lost Odyssey.

ViolentDjango

@Kungfu_Kenobi @Rubius02 Except that Square Enix is a huge company and their different groups are all working on completely different games. Crystal Tools was built for Final Fantasy games, and was used on Final Fantasy games -- just like their new engine is used for and on Final Fantasy games. Plenty of their other games have used other engines (including Last Remnant, which was produced during the time the company spent working on FF13). A lot of companies do stuff like that, especially the big ones. The fact that some of their groups are using Unreal doesn't mean they won't get mileage out of their inhouse engines.

404FredNotFound

The Last Reminant was a great game, bit unappreciated by most tho, UE its a great engine lets see what Square Enix can do with it.

Kungfu_Kenobi
Kungfu_Kenobi

@Rubius02 My thoughts exactly. Familiarity with your tools, and an asset library you can use from project to project are generally more important than the technology that drives your game.

Wonder if they will try a new Supreme Commander with this engine

If Square got back to telling a great story with fun gameplay I wouldn't care if they used 8 bit graphics again. Pretty much FF9 and earlier is what I mean. (Throw 8 out too)

They're using Unreal because as engines go it's cheaper. Same reason all these other developers use it. Either way unless Square Enix can get back to making games like Square used to before they got Enixed then who cares? The end result will still likely suck.

I don't really care about which engine you use square... Make FF XV with the FF VIII engine for all I care, I just want to enjoy your games again, I don't care about the beautiful backgrounds and cutscenes that FF XIII had... Good story, characters, soundtrack and gameplay can be accomplished with any engine.
