Square Enix prepping new PSP Final Fantasy

Publisher opens a teaser Web site for Dissidia, promises more information at this weekend's Square Enix Party in Japan.

by

Square Enix should reveal more on Dissidia this weekend.

Square Enix has set up a teaser site for a new game confirming what any industry watcher could have guessed: The publisher is working on a new Final Fantasy game called Dissidia. While Dissidia will share the brand of Square Enix's hit role-playing game series, it might represent a departure from the Final Fantasy norm if the site's tagline is anything to go by.

"Fantasy is endless," reads the teaser site's opening animation. "Fantasy has no limited form."

Exactly what that means might be disclosed at this weekend's Square Enix Party 2007 in Japan, where the teaser site says information about the game will be revealed. Currently, the site displays a logo for the game in front of some character artwork and a note that frequent Final Fantasy character designer Tetsuya Nomura will handle those duties on Dissidia as well.

While the teaser page doesn't specify a platform, Square Enix lists it as a PlayStation Portable game elsewhere on its official site.

GameSpot will be attending the Square Enix Party, so check back soon for more coverage of Dissidia and all other Final Fantasy-related news.

I hate teasers! The site should just like show a kick ass video or somthing! But no matter what way you look at it, Dissidia is like the Super Smash Bros. of Final Fantasy, and that alone is enogh to make me day dream about it.

I'm Final Fantasy Long Story´s and Turn Base Fan. (Only don´t like aleatory encounter´s). If is true FF RPG must have TB playability and minimum 100 hour´s to play. YES?

First of all the WII isnt just a fad becuase its cheap. And no it wont dissapear. Believe me im a Ps2 Ps3 fan as well and i believe in it but the Wii not only is cheap but its a different type of system. It gives interactivity in games. Making it a different system to the 3. The Ps3 on the other hand has advanced to fast for this age and is now loing money. But has just put The Xbox in a pickle. They are going to have to pull somthing better than the ps3 off and lose a ton of money to beat them. And Nintendo is fine still becuase they arnt the same as Ps3 and Xbox. Now about final fantasy. Who ever says FFXII was good..... come on... it wasnt that good. It was good for like 5 hours. Then it just got boring and repeating (yes i did beat the whole game) story was also bad so short and weak. AND THE MAIN THING IS. They are trying to go somthing different and it failed. They are trying to give the online feel to an offline game. Which if i wanted to play an online game i would. But instead i play FFXII which is tryin to be online but it fails. Gambits ruin the game. I didnt even need to play my gambits were so well made. I maxed the ability chart way to fast. Sqaure enix on the other hand is going down .... fast. I love SE just as much as u guys but if u havnt noticed they have been doing **** FFXII was all about the graphics zzzz bore. I want story game play lots of spells long game. Not short game no story crappy game play no need for u to play and just graphics. I can watch a movie if i want that. Now they are making like 10 games at once. So they better do somthing fast or else they arnt gonna do so well.

Games like this push the PSP beyond "good" to "must-have" status.

Of course the Wii is going to be selling like crazy, it costs $250, if you priced either the 360 or the PS3 at that price, the Wii would be dead in the water. I just have this feeling that the Wii is going to be a fad, it won't just totally disappear but the hype will go away. I mean it really sounds enticing that you can buy a new gaming system for only $250 when the others cost $400 (you can't do **** with the core 360) but to people like me who play a lot of games, after a few hours of swinging the controller around, it gets boring, very boring. And I also have to look at last-gen graphics, which is definitely a huge downfall. When it comes to talking about how its a bunch of things that you already have in one, I can guarantee you that most people dont have a blu-ray player, something that WILL be in most homes in the future. Blu-ray had it's first movie (Casino-Royale) sell over 100,000 copies in only 9 months, two months faster than it took the first DVD to reach the same mark. Also to get what the PS3 has in terms of processing power, a majority of people don't have that in a PC either. Of course it seems like a lot of extra stuff but when you own one, and you have free online play, the ability to store music, photos, movies, download movies, download games, go online, and have soon to be great online system (Home, that looks to be very good, and a potential system seller for the PS3) you have something that is worth way more than only $600. It also doubles as a PS2! Sure some games don't play, but a majority do. Just think, it costs sony $840 just to make the thing and they sell it for $600, and when companies sell things don't they try and make a profit? Basically everyone who has one knows they just got a great deal, and when you look at the line up of games coming out (the ones that aren't even system sellers like KH3, FFXIII, MGS4, GoW3) you know that you made a good choice. If microsoft was smart, they would have made the HD-DVD standard in all their systems. People would have either had to wait for the PS3 or a Wii if they didn't want it but people would have still bought it. It would also have switched how the race between Bluray and HD-DVD is going, which really could have left Sony for dead. And if you really want to get down to price, the only one worth it out of the Wii and 360 is the Wii. The Wii has innovation, a lot of it, while the 360 is just an upgraded last-gen console. It has been stated that Gears of War maxed out on the 360, which is pretty sad because right now we are seeing the best PS2 games not PS3, PS2. So it took them a year to get the best of the 360, where the PS3's power will never be fully exploited. So back to the price point: PS3- Blu-Ray Player, Wifi, 60gb HDD, Card Slots, HDMI, Total =$600 360- System($400) + HD-DVD ($200) + Wireless ($100) + 40 more gigs ($180) with no HDMI = $880 Oh and for all the 360 owners, MS just gave you the shaft with the 360 Elite, because you basically should get a whole new system instead of buying the 120gb HDD for $180, when I can get a MUCH cheaper laptop hard drive for my PS3. Sorry this is so long, I just need some release when all I see is the media bashing the PS3. Every person that I know that has one, loves it and doesn't regret buying it one bit.

I hope it isn't as passive as FFXII was.

i'm sick of all these "different" final fantasies! After whinging about it yesterday I went and bought FF3 on the DS... Its obviouisly simple compared to more recent iterations but I'm loving it! Lets have a return to form from Square... the kind of stuff they were putting out long before the merger

Can't WAIT for this. It's been announced the Zidane and Kuja from FFIX are going to be in the game, as will the Warrior of Light from FFI, as well as a crossover of characters from every FF. This is going to be an amazing game; I am so glad that I have my PSP.

FFXI was a bit on the rubbish side for me because I got stuck on 2 servers which seemed to be populated by non english speaking people (why no region based serves?) and if you don't pay every month you will lose your character after 3 months (I assume that is the same).

"Well I've played Final Fantasy XI and it sucks. A lot." It doesn't suck that bad. Its a fun game. Its just that there are a lot of better mmorgp's out there, World of Warcraft for example.

What i find incredible is that some people still complaining about not even trying the ff12 title for whatever reason - in this day and age, it's sad quiet simply put. When all they need to do is rent it for a few nights and experience it and then decide to buy/not to buy. And for others just buy from a specialist games shop and after examining it for a few days take it back and ask for a exchange or refund that's only if you dislike it. Having said that this is one of these titles that you either love or really hate. Anyway, it's good to hear news of 'even' more finalfantasy titles. Still reading the whole of the above article, i have come to the conclusion that maybe they (SE) are trying to move away from the 'normal' ff style in order to make a ff title annually - probably... If my memory serves me right i recall something along the lines of Squareenix trying to move away from the current story-line based kingdom heart series. Again it's so they may release more titles and won't have to worry about the story linking. I fondly remember what happen to tomb raider when they tried this annual 'milking' (i like to call it) back in the 32bit console era. It was a "boom and bust" scenario. I hope they do a 'U turn' on this - what i see as - ludicrous, dunce and damaging path. There's no need for this sort of limited and narrow-minded way of thinking... Especially when they have all the back catalogue to use as resources. It worked for Nintendo and others to re-tell old story, and remake masterpieces to reflect the new age and new hardware etc. etc. etc...

Stop messing around and give us Crisis Core already! Oh yeah, how about that mega-famous, hyper-loved Chrono series? And the now buried rumour of an FFVII remake? Wanna make money S-E? Listen to us! Give us what we want! Man, they get dumber by the day... Still, no matter what crap they throw at us, we still end up buying it... Maybe we are the dumb ones here after all...

ucphenom82, do you have any idea how many people play FFXI and love it? XI is an incredible game with endless amounts of things to do. It is one of the best Final Fantasies that exist because it is a game that so many FF lovers can share and take part in... Plus, the fact that you skipped the game makes your opinion on it worthless.

Been absorbed in FFXII for ages now, and been longing for a 'proper' FF game for my PSP ever since I got it at launch - hope this is it!

Anybody who hasn't given FFXII a shot because of FFXI is a plain fool. I skipped FFXI, and I played about 2 hours of FFX-2 and got rid of it...but I love FFXII. LOVE it. I was unsure about the battle system at first too, but now I doubt I can go back to random battles. Anyway, what's with the new PSP game when they still haven't finished Crisis Core? I guess it's probably a different dev team, though. Those vague statements kind of make it sound like it'll be an MMORPG, or maybe a nonlinear, open-ended RPG.

What looks promising? The artwork used to advertise the game? For all we know this could bomb harder than "Spirits Within", or at least harder than "Crystal Cronicles". I liked the changes in "Crystal Cronicles" but getting 4 GBAs just to play with your friends was a blasted pain. Anyway I'm gonna reserve my opinions about "Dissidia" until some actual gameplay footage (not CG garbage teaser) or at least gameplay screen shots are revealed...

Whatever this game ends up being about and however it plays, I just hope Square Enix ports it to the PS2 so I can play it if it turns out good. I'm not getting a PSP until they redesign it to have two analog nubs or the PSP2 comes out with the previously mentioned control designs.
