Square Enix posts $65M profit, as Thief, Tomb Raider Xbox One/PS4 sales "favorable"

Japanese publisher in the black thanks to new releases; Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn also a top performer.

by

Japanese publisher Square Enix today reported earnings for its fiscal year ended March 31, announcing that--as expected--both revenue and profit are up year-over-year. Revenue was up 4.8 percent to ¥155 billion ($1.5 billion), while profit came in at ¥6.6 billion ($64.7 million), substantially better than the ¥13.7 billion ($134.4 million) loss posted this time last year.

Helping Square Enix reach a profit this year were games like Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, Thief, and Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, all of which recorded "favorable" sales, the company said in a press release. Square Enix added that PC browser game Sengoku IXA has been showing "steady performance," while mobile game Kaku-San-Sei Million Arthur "has become an instant hit" in Taiwan and China.

In addition, Square Enix called out Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn as a top performer, achieving "favorable progress" during the year. Square Enix's game division, Digital Entertainment, saw revenue rise 5.7 percent to ¥94.57 billion ($927.9 million). Operating income for the division was ¥10.7 billion ($104.9 million)

Square Enix sold a total of 17.23 million games during the year, most of which (8.2 million) were sold in North America. Japan (4.6 million) was the next largest region, followed by Europe (4.08 million) and Asia (340,000).

Good for Square Enix. FF 14 is awesome. I'd play it if I had the time to play an MMO to justify the subscription. Life is too busy right now.

Tomb Raider was great!

I predict that their next fiscal year will show an even larger profit because of certain games on the horizon.

Now! If Square-Enix make Final Fantasy XIV for Xbox One. ( and Microsoft to let them do cross-platform on Xbox One ) Everything will be awesome!

Ah FFXIV, it's a new week and tomorrow (Tuesday) I'll be capping my weekly tokens for the 2nd best gear in the game and not play until next week cause there's no point. Fun times Fun times.

Thief sale favourable, this must be a joke. I got this game with new GPU, not my type of game so I listed it on Ebay 5 times. The lowest price I was asking for it was 9 pounds. no intrest whatsover. When I was selling it for 9 pounds it wa reatailing for 15.99. no intrest. What a joke.

Thief was a rather bad disappointment in my book, but Tomb Raider was actually pretty fun.

I'm also dying for another new Deus Ex, that's the series that's the series that is singlehandedly maintaining my interest in what Square Enix does.

I might have enjoyed Thief more had there been more than just 2 shades of color and the amount of lock picking was dialed back. The lack of color felt way too much like the first Gears of War game, and looking back in comparison Gears had more color.

Ah, gotta love the early stages of a console cycle.   Put out a disappointing game like Thief, and you can still make a profit because there just aren't that many games available.

Thief was disappointing but it wasn't a total failure - I enjoyed playing it and I know others did too. If sales were good then maybe we'll see another game - I hope so. They must learn from the (many) mistakes they made with Thief 2014, but it wasn't all bad, there is a good game in there trying to get out.

They need to take theif out that equation.

Good, now use those profits to fund FF XV and KH 3; and only those games until they release.

The wait for Final Fantasy Versus has been shameful.

It's bizarre that these days Square is only known for Final Fantasy and random western games. I miss when it was just RPGs

While some people feel robbed about the proper Thief experience, you can find comfort at GoG. Their sales prices are a steal.

Going to get Thief but waiting for a price drop. Not paying 60 bucks for it.

Smart move buying Eidos IPs. Other than Final Fantasy, North American gamers bought Square titles on a niche by niche basis. The first Square game I ever bought was Hitman Absolution. Odd that Eidos couldn't keep themselves afloat.

Couldn't help but notice that Lightning Returns: XIII was not mentioned :P

As far as I'm concerned, Sqaure Enix have an ace up their sleeve with Crystal Dynamics and Soul Reaver 3.

I'd love a new Deus Ex, or a new (good) Hitman, or Just Cause 3 now pls.

Good, now they have no excuse to delay a sequel to the Tomb Raider re-boot exclusively for next gen.

Picked up a copy for my PS4 cause everyone kept talking about it. Was enjoyable even though I hated the series in general, but God...the voice acting was some of the worst since Resident Evil 1 days....

Well look like see more MMO final fanstey in future since play beta and no good and on another hand didnt understand why Tomb Raidler reboot sold more than ps3 and xbox360 visions and thief was good looking but its really not next gen and i think next gen stuff long dead and remenber thief creator saying next gen dogs lol because we all know lie.

Tomb Raider did well partly because of the absence of games on the new consoles. Released a month or two into the new consoles lives at a time when there was little to spend you money on was a smart move.

I'm glad it did well tbh, I got it on the PC and enjoyed it a lot.

@milleniaxender  MS already has FF14 for the PC. Don't think they need or care about FF14 on the Xbox1.

@lukey52 FFX was remastered because it was the perfect building block. Those old PS1 games would need an entire makeover to be playable.

@tommynj With rebate and $10 discount at Dell, I picked up Thief for $25. Mind you, I'm thinking it needs to be $20 to be worth it. The graphics are not a step up on the PS4 like I expected. It looks like a ten year old PC game.

@Sevenizz  Eidos couldn't keep themselves afloat since they just didn't have the financial resources and had to rush out games and have limited marketing. Now they don't have that problem so can make the games they were always capable of and have the marketing to boot.

@atopp399 They wasted their time on that piece of crap franchise when they could have upped the resources for FFXV, Kingdom Hearts III, or a good new installment for their other great franchises.

@wookiegr Except to make it better.

But yeah, that game deserves a sequel.  A pleasant surprise, that was.

@collingtonuk It was an ok game not quite sure why it didn't really connect with me but something was off. Thief on the other hand was really great and I hope they continue to do more with it.

@olddadgamer @wookiegr  It has, and it is in progressing. I hope SE could show at least trailer or short gameplay for TR reboot sequel in E3. But i think, maybe the next E3, TR sequel may show up.

xantufrog
xantufrog

@method115 @collingtonukI hope they do more as well if they listen to feedback and make a more flexible and polished experience. I was really pleasantly surprised by Thief after reading all the trash talk - it stands pretty well on its own (great stealth ambiance). But if we're talking sequels, I'd love to see the bumps get ironed out.

xOmniCloudx
xOmniCloudx

@gamingnerd121 @xOmniCloudx @Sevenizz  Most games they made in the PS2 era are the result of that. If it wasn't Tomb Raider it was not at full anything. That didn't save  TR: Angel of Darkness which was  nearly an unplayable mess though. The 360 and PS3 Tomb Raider games weren't tested thoroughly and have a good deal of random bugs and glitches. Their PS1 games started to take a hit later too as they just rushed out TR games, damaged the brand and then half-assed everything else. Even Legacy of Kain (that needs a reboot) was not safe after Soul Reaver (which had budget and time issues from the start). The studio was always financially misguided. They took on projects often too big for them. Sometimes too many at once.

olddadgamer

@namitokiwa @olddadgamer@wookiegrHas it been officially announced?  I mean, profit + setting it up on a tee for a sequel at the end generally = sequel, so it'll be as surprising as the sun coming up, but is it official?
