Square Enix developing another MMOG - Report

Final Fantasy XIV publisher wants to operate two to three massively multiplayer titles simultaneously to promote stable income.

Square Enix is working on at least one new massively multiplayer online role-playing game, according to reports out of Japan. Today, gaming blog Andria Sang translated comments made by CEO Yoichi Wada during a conference call following the company's May 13 earnings report. The just-released transcript of the call says that Wada wants his company to operate two to three "large-scale" MMOGs at the same time in order to promote "stable cash flow."

Square Enix's CEO wants more MMORPGs.

Wada apparently hopes to announce Square Enix's next MMOG during its current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2012. The company is already operating two massively multiplayer online role-playing games: The aging Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV Online, which debuted last year to lackluster reviews. Last December, the leadership team behind the project was removed and its PlayStation 3 version was indefinitely delayed.

Wada's statements came after Square Enix reported dismal earnings for its past fiscal year, which ended on March 31, 2011. Earlier this month, the company told its shareholders to brace for "extraordinary losses" of $148 million due to project cancellations and the Great East Japan Earthquake that hit this past March.

Final Fantasy 11 has proved it's worth by lasting for 10 years, it wasn't a perfect game by any means but it had so many brilliant qualities ie amazing job classes, Paladin, Redmage, Samurai, Thief to name a few which created players that specialized in a specific job which was called your main job. These players were respected for having achieved special skill in their specific job....so what does SE do? cancel specific jobs and mix them all together to create a player who does a bit of everything. No time to talk about the absence of an auction house, a tedious user interface, a bolt on auto-attack system and a crafting and synthesis system that is not enjoyable. SE should have took the good things about FF11 and upgraded them not changed them. People don't want a different FF11, they want the same game with improvements.

Why did they have to call this MMORPGs FFXI and FFXIV? I took pride on playing every game in the series (and I will eventually get around to beating VIII) but cannot any longer, since they made these open ended MMOs in the sequence of main titles. Well, shouldn't Final Fantasy Tactics have been the real FF8, since it came out after 7? No, because it was a different concept using the FF theme, so it is it's own (under developed) series.

You can tell SE have lost the credibility of its fans. This whole new scheme is just to make up for XIV's initial flop. But wait, XIV can still be revived by just making simple tweaks and alterations. Do SE have to go through the effort of making another MMO and continue to embarrass themselves?

A new MMO? Yeah well. It's not like we're trusting them again xD. Aw man, they should really stick to their original games!

Square Enix logic: late 1990's:Yes! IOur turned-based RPG's are so popular, we are making so much money yay! late 2000's: Aw man our real time action RPG's aren't doing well at all. I know! make more of them!

Square Enix is like the Japanese version of Blizzard now, Final Fantasy XI is their World of WarCraft and Final Fantasy XIV is their Diablo. This next one will be their StarCraft. Damn how the mighty RPG company we used to know and love had come to this. It's sad that all their good RPGs nowadays are all remakes and re-releases on DS, PSP, iPhone, Mobile Phone, VC, and PSN.

So they have awful losses and think they need another mmo to bring in some regular cash... after FF XIV shouldn't they tell fans there making one learning from previous games as well as working to make old ones better rather than we want more of your money ;) so lets throw out any ole thing

If SE does this, they owe a free copy of the new MMO to each sucker who bought FF14 (including me!). Not that I have much faith left in SE anymore.... :( :( :(

For those who dont realize FF XIV is being worked on, alot, but it not being perfect yet doesnt mean they should stop all other projects and not look to the future. they can work on more then 1 game at a time easily, plus another MMO being worked on doesnt mean itl be out soon, itl be many years easily.

I would think they would want to get FFXIV right before tackling another MMO. No wonder they are dragging their feet fixing FFXIV if they have another team working on a MMO. I used to consider myself a FF die hard, but I just cant to it anymore. 13 wasnt bad, it was just too linear and dumb down it was boring. FFXIV was... well we all know what it was..

another game from square. looks promising. I personally think that square games are good quality games, though some fanboys/girls may not agree.

@emperiox Yeah, but at least Capcom's released titles like Street Fighter IV and Marvel vs. Capcom this gen, and both of those were solid games which are pretty much universally acclaimed, compared to the mixed fan reaction of FFXIII and the general apathy that most of Square's portable titles have received.

@Lareneg Capcom is a bad example. All they really do is milk DLC...

emperiox

@Aravesque I agree! Every single FF game after FF10 started getting lame (10 was awesome though!), I haven't even tryed number 11...12 was just a repetitive hack and slash, 13 sucked, 14 sucked... This better be a f2p mmo, or I honestly can't see it competing with Guild Wars 2. Just my thoughts...

Aravesque

Square-Enix is Trolling!, I can't sum it up in better words, ther're giving FFXIII a sequel, Dissidia 012 was not even a refresh from the original, FFXIV was just absolute garbage, and this is all related because they simply became lazy in everything except the graphics department. Square-Enix, please quit dissapointing Squaresoft fans.

@ kavadias1981 Honestly, I don't want to see SE fail. But unless they change things, they are GOING to. I think that they have some false conception that gamers worldwide are waiting with baited breath for their every word. They're not. Gamers have moved on. There are plenty of great companies who are doing a MUCH better job at servicing their consumers, and many other japanese ones as well (for example, Capcom).

just wanted to add that i know alot of square and sony fans will downrate by comment below, but just remeber that your blind love for those who are ruinning that good game and system , are what are driving fans to the xbox 360, heck all MS has to do nowadays is just play the "waiting game" and more pissed of players just come tummbling in.even when your kid does something wrong your not gonna sit there and tell him/her every thing is okay or they will not learn and continue making the same mistakes over and over again.

so many of you have stated some really important points including --square relasing new mmo's instead of fixing the already bad suffering ones(look at the Final Fantasy XIV review it's horrible) --squar not focusing on a better "offline" rpg which they are better at doing. --People wanting square to go back to their old good self and stop making the crappy decisions they have been making lately I agree with all this, Lareneg below me , your point is well said.II have argued for a long time that sony execs have needed to turn a round for a long time and start making good descisions it's been one bad descision after another at times and i cannot see how long loyalty will last for them.Cmon sony fans ..it's time for some tough love for sony, they need to learn, not tommorrow or next year but now.

That's plainly dumb. Look at how diminished SqEnix is... They are publishing games they never had any involvement with (Hitman, Deus Ex etc) just because their new IP's, or even renowed games, do not meet the company's expectations (Final Fantasy XIV, Nier, The 3rd Birthday, Lord of Arcana etc). For such a big company, it's as sad as it's bad. Wanting to make 3 more MMO's without having fixed the mess FF XIV is? That's at least ignorant, and disrespecting towards the audience. Stand on your feet while you still can, SqEnix. You got the resources to be a giant, just not managing them correctly.

**** MEANWHILE AT SE HEADQUATERS **** SE Exec1: FFXIV was a complete disaster SE Exec2: Yeah, that sucks. SE Exec1: So... wanna make like... 3 more MMOs? SE Exec2: Hell yeah!

@lareneg Every ounce of what you say is spot on. I say we bring their egos down a peg and stop buying their games until they get some guys in there that are both in touch with the world and have some business sense. And after the sexist joke that was parasite eve 3, there is no doubt in my mind that the company as it is would screw up kingdom hearts 3. They are trying to force feed us garbage instead of listening to their fans and this is going to hurt the company in the long run. Hell, it already is.

Square Enix is shockingly out of touch with their audience. Unless gamers in Japan are just CLAMOURING for four or five new MMORPGs--which I somehow doubt, given that there's still the ten-ton elephant of WoW stomping around, picking off contenders like flies--then they have no bloody idea what they're doing. They've alienated their core audience and made themselves incomprehensible to anyone else. Compare them to a developer like Bethesda, or Bioware, and look at how awful a job SE does of supporting their titles with special editions, DLC, developer interviews, etc. SE doesn't know how to operate in the modern world, and their egos are out of date. It's not their world any more, and they need to acknowledge that or go belly-up. I was one of the ones who genuinely enjoyed FFXIII, but this is getting ridiculous. They're wasting their money, and they clearly don't know how to do good business. I'm not claiming to be some business genius. But I know games, and SE has made all the wrong moves in the past couple of years (as so many have pointed out; NOT making KH3 is a foolish mistake, particularly when they're making all these portable titles which do not generate as much income or sell as well). Losses of 148 million are embarrassing, even with the earthquake.

This isnt a small company, they have the cash to do this unlike most small companies who announce the same thing and then fail afterwareds cuz they ran out of money to do it.

I've finally lost faith in the SquareEnix brand. These execs are sutting on IP's we're dying to throw money at, but instead want to embeace a market saturated with bad games for easy money. I hope they use that MMO revenue to hire the talent to make great games again. Best of luck SE.

Just stop with the MMO's and release Versus 13, 13-2, and KH3. KH3 alone will bring some mad cash in.

to many games to choose from to get income. Remake of Final Fantasy 6 and Final Fantasy 7. Kingdom Hearts 3. Dragon Quest 11. Final Fantasy Versus 13 and Final Fantasy XIII-2. release this games instant cash..

If they want more money, they should just ditch Enix and go back to being Squaresoft so they can make good games again. Enix has done nothing but ruin Square

DanteDelacoix

and may I also add, that even though its been said over an over, ill say it again. If they are really this desperate for cash then they should deploy their failsafe. Redo FF7 as they teased all those years ago. You want cash, thats how you will get it

DanteDelacoix

Jesus, really? Whoever is pulling the strings there clearly doesn't know what the market wants. The glory days of square seem truely over for me. Clearly this company does not know how to make a decent MMO so they should look to other genres. AND HURRY UP WITH KH3!!!

macca366

Oh wow.. That doesn't sound like a smart plan to make up for losses. I can understand the stable cashflow attractivenss of an MMO, but If I were in charge, my first good thought would be to do a new full-fledged Kingdom Hearts. If I were really daring, I'd pour my resources into a awesome new IP.

I think SE would be better focusing on releasing the long time expected FF games. FF XIV online and obviously FF vs XIII. Who needs a third MMORPG announcement if we (PS3 users) still have to see the first one?

This is a good idea...because there is tons more profitability in MMO's and perhaps they will learn from their mistakes (one would hope) and use the profit to go back to their roots and make a stellar, classic one player RPG that takes 50-60 hours to beat and 100+ to complete =D. Ps: I just seriously need materia back ...*puppy dog eyes*

SE..... If you want money stop trying to cater to western tastes look at ff13 ffs hands down the worst FF I've ever played and the horrid front mission mission game that may as well of had armoured core clone slapped on the box because that was not a front mission game infact while I'm on the front mission subject how about releasing those games outside of Japan? Frontmission3 is my second favourite ps1 game being beaten only by FF7 Also where has FF13-versus gone? And agito? There's been no news in ages it's like they fell off the planet if they really needed the money they have 2 games that would sort them out kingdom hearts3 (why this hasn't been made already baffles me) and the real goldmine game an FF7 remake (ps3 graphics and voice acting would be enough for me to buy it infact just the graphics would do) Come on SE........

How about they fix XIV before making another one? It seems like they've completely given up on even trying to improve that. Very, very little has changed since September. It's rather pathetic, really.
