Spyro: A Hero's Tail Hands-On

We try out Spyro the Dragon's upcoming adventure.

At a recent press event, we had the opportunity to get our hands on Spyro: A Hero's Tail. Versions of the game for all three current-generation consoles were on display at the Game Stars Live event in London, but most of our time was actually spent playing the PlayStation 2 version.

The first level we played, which is featured in a demo that VU Games representatives handed out to show attendees, actually didn't feature Spyro the Dragon at all but rather Sergeant Bird, a penguin equipped with a jetpack. The level was quite unlike what we've come to expect from the Spyro series. The level required us to fly over an island and complete five different objectives within a three-minute time limit. The objectives included flying through eight rings, flying under eight arches, dropping bombs on eight ground targets, and using missiles to kill eight flying enemies and eight ground-based enemies. The level was actually a lot of fun, especially when we discovered that we were able to collect barrels that upgraded our jetpack with an insane nitro boost.

Moving on to the game proper, we found ourselves presented with a first level that was exactly what we've come to expect from the Spyro series. There was a large door that we couldn't pass through until we'd destroyed all of the dark crystals in the area by charging into them, a ledge that was too high for us to pass until we learned the double-jump skill, and a couple of sheep wandering around that, no matter how hard we tried, we couldn't set alight with our fire-breathing. We also spoke with a character who told us about a nearby shop that, among other things, had a lock pick for sale. We spent some of the gems we'd been collecting, used the lock pick to get through a door, and arrived in an area not radically different from the one that we'd just left. At that point it seemed clear that it would take some real play time to reach many more areas of interest.

Spyro: A Hero's Tail is currently scheduled for release in November. We look forward to bringing you more information on the game just as soon as we have the opportunity to spend some quality time with it.
