SpongeBob launches THQ XBLA efforts

Publisher set to go downloadable with next month's releases of Underpants Slam! and Screwjumper; Elements of Destruction and Rocket Riot to follow.

Although franchises associated with THQ, such as Tetris and Worms, have shown up as Xbox Live Arcade games, the publisher wasn't actually involved in those projects. However, the company behind Saints Row and recent WWE games is finally ready to jump into the downloadable console-game market. THQ announced today that it will release a pair of Live Arcade games next month.

The publisher's first steps into digital distribution will mirror its strategy to make more retail games based on properties it owns, as opposed to high-profile licenses such as its WWE, Pixar, and Nickelodeon franchises. November will see the release of one licensed game, SpongeBob SquarePants: Underpants Slam!, as well as one original, Screwjumper. THQ also announced a pair of original Live Arcade games to follow those: Elements of Destruction and Rocket Riot.

"We view Xbox Live Arcade for Xbox 360 as a natural fit for many of our established casual brands, as well as an opportunity to serve up new gaming content," THQ senior vice president of worldwide marketing Bob Aniello said in a statement.
