Splinter Cell, Prince of Persia bundles delayed

Ubisoft's HD, 3D update for acrobatic action adventure trilogy due April 19, followed by classic Sam Fisher stealth action series on June 21.

Gamers who stopped by their local retailer today hoping to pick up a copy of Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Classic Trilogy HD and Prince of Persia Classic Trilogy HD for the PlayStation 3 likely came away disappointed. Ubisoft today confirmed for GameSpot that the classic Prince of Persia HD update is now expected to arrive on April 19, followed by the Splinter Cell HD package on June 21.

Royalty arrives at its leisure.

Like its downloadable counterpart released through the PlayStation Network in December, Ubisoft's Prince of Persia combo includes 2003's The Sands of Time, 2004's Warrior Within, and 2005's The Two Thrones. All three games benefit from an HD remastering, as well as new stereoscopic 3D visuals.

Similarly, Splinter Cell Classic Trilogy HD includes the 2002 original stealth shooter, as well as Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory. All three games have also been updated with high-definition graphics and a stereoscopic 3D view. Ubisoft had also said that it was planning on releasing the Splinter Cell Classic Trilogy HD through the PSN.

Both bundles share a $39.99 price point. Ubisoft had not returned GameSpot's request for comment as of press time.

I dont know. I want to go back and play through all these but you can get em for xbox (i have a 360) on amazon for about dollar each not including shipping. I could have them all at my doorstep in a week for around $15. Not sure if it's worth the wait or not.

Didn't even know they were doing this. This is what happens when you're in GTMO, I am so outta the loop, but excited that these are coming out in a couple months. Yay, something to do before RAGE, and Skyrim ...

I honestly don't like either of these games, so my day is not ruined.

@hahamanin Yes I did, and I think that this is what you are referring to. "Ubisoft had also said that it WAS planning on releasing the Splinter Cell Classic Trilogy HD through the PSN." Reading this I take it that they were planning on releasing it on PSN since it is in past tense, but may not anymore. If there WERE STILL planning on releasing it I think that it would read as follows. Ubisoft had also said that it IS planning on releasing the Splinter Cell Classic Trilogy HD through the PSN. You see where I'm coming from?

@metalkid9: I wasn't trying to argue with you. You said two ps2 discs were about equal in capacity to one 360 disc. Which is technically correct. However, you said the 360 doesn't use DVDs. Regardless of how many layers the discs have, DVD technology is what the 360 uses. So, yes, you were half right. You can argue the differences between the different types of DVD discs all day long if you like, but the 360 uses DVDs.

hahamanin

@desauce lol u said this "And I hate to tell you but the HD Trilogy won't be release on PSN. It is a disc game, not a downloadable game." did u even read this article?

IndianaPwns39
IndianaPwns39

@metalkid9 Also, because you wanted to know. We're discussing this because you said "2 PS2 games equal to almost one DL-DVD meaning if they release 3 games they can put them into 2 DL-DVD's like many games nowadays have been doing so. One latest example would be Dead Space 2." Aside from that implying Dead Space 2 is two games (?) I just wanted to point out that there are degrees and differences in common DVDs that make that statement wrong. It isn't just "2 PS2 games = one 360 disc" because the PS2 used different DVDs and compression techniques the 360 does not. Also, we don't even know if these HD PS3 variants are the PS2 version (they could be Xbox; hopefully, since they ran better). Tons of reasons why its just not that simple, and I said the easiest one. Then you had to insult me, even though you were wrong.

IndianaPwns39
IndianaPwns39

@metalkid9 *Sigh* Most DVDs ARE dual layered. That term you keep whipping out there, "DL-DVD", isn't a technical term. You see "DL" occasionally when buying DVD-Rs because single layered DVD-Rs are still around. DVDs are divided into categories. DVD-9 being the most prominent SS DL type disc. The reason I pointed this out, is because verbatim you said "360 doesn't use DVD's, PS2 and xbox did" which is just wrong. You keep saying "DL-DVD" as if its something, and it isn't. Which dual layered are you talking about? DVD-9? 10? There's even 18 that has 4 layers. All grouped into being called "DVDs".

metalkid9
metalkid9

I'm also not sure what the point of your original post was. I don't recall the PoP or SC games being DL-DVDs since that was the topic of discussion.

metalkid9
metalkid9

@IndianaPwns39, It was the very first sentence: "You are well aware that most DVDs are dual layer right?" and Edit: I never said the "360 invented the technology". Not sure where you were going with that...

IndianaPwns39
IndianaPwns39

@metalkid9 Do me a favor. Go back to my initial post and tell me where I said DVD and dual layered are the same thing. Then you go back to kindergarten and learn to differentiate, as you so happily put it. My point was, was that the PS2 did have dual layered games later on in its life. The PS2 was capable of playing those discs and because games were getting bigger, they adapted to avoid several discs. God of War 1&2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Gran Turismo 4, just a few examples of games that took advantage of the new format. The 360 did not invent dual layered DVD technology.

@Jurassic85 I'm sorry you feel i'm trolling but I am clearly not. I rarely post anything in forums and did in this thread because I felt somebody needed to say something to all the 360 owners crying about these games being PS3 exclusive. Also again I haven't been arguing with anyone, I was just stating facts. Sometimes the facts are hard to hear. I know, its ok. Have fun buddy

mtait01
mtait01

@Muhaas Im a 360 owner and as much I hate people talking badly about the 360, what you said is absolutley true. I used to have a ps3 (had to sell because of money worries), and yeah, the exclusives on ps3 are way better, blu-ray is better (obviously) and even the console dashboard menus are better. Personally I dont think a Blu-Ray player is enough to say the ps3 is better, simply the exclusives are better. 360 has Halo and Gears (Which I personally dont like). PS3 has Rachet and Clank, Resistance, Killzone, Uncharted, MGS, Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo, God of War and loads of others. I love my 360, but I have to admit, the ps3 is a far superior console in almost every way. But the 360 is still awesome even if a little behind the ps3 technology-wise. Now I'm more financially stable, I'm looking to buy a ps3 in the near future ;)

@jurassic85 I'm sorry you see my posts as arguing. If you go back to my first post I was stating that the 360's disc space was an issue with putting 3 games on 1 disc. To refresh your memory: "For all of you Xbox people crying about it not being released on 360 the reason is because they cant fit all 3 games on a DVD. PS3 uses Blu-Ray which holds up to 50GB which makes this possible. Sorry 360 owners, better luck next time." As far as conviction goes it has nothing to do with this article or anything that I said before YOU brought it up. So will I bow out of this conversation? Hell no. As far as people giving me thumbs down I really don't give a F@*K lol. Forums are for talking about the article at hand which I was clearly doing. You sir are the one talking about stuff that does not pertain to this article.

Jurassic85
Jurassic85

@desauce Nobody is saying that you have to trust reviews, but there is a reason why gaming sites take the time to review the same game on different consoles. There are often key differences, clearly this was the case with Conviction on 360 vs PC version. You played a watered down version of the game, so when you say it sucks, it holds no weight. The PC version didn't even allow for voice chat between co-op players, of course is sucked. Play it on 360 and then come talk to me, lol. Just bow out gracefully. Stop arguing with everyone. Most of your comments on this article have got "thumbs downs" from your fellow poster. There are plenty of AMAZING exclusives for the 360; Halo, Alan Wake, Gears of War, Forza 3, and Conviction, to name a few.

SDBusDriver1979
SDBusDriver1979

@desauce Probably misunderstanding what you said by making seem that the Splinter Cell Trilogy would not fit on one DVD. I do not get what you are go at with HD-DVD. Microsoft said is was strictly for movies for the 360 not for gaming and only adopted it as an add-on. It wouldn't make any sense to segregate their market until they were ready to release a new system altogether. As for Blu-ray for the PS3 its a trade-off because you have up to 50GB of storage but the PS3's Blu-ray only reads at 2x speed this is why you have to install a lot of your games on the PS3 because the system can't pull the data fast enough off of the disc in game. One way getting around this by reducing load times or longer installs is by compression to pull that data off the disc faster. There is many other ways around this but the easy is to use compression. A smart developer can work around installs but simply most are too lazy to try. If you want to go down the exclusive conversation it will be a very boring one since I mostly only have interest in playing coop, online games, or wrpgs on consoles at least. Because of that is why I enjoyed Conviction as much as I did.

@desauce Actually, the 3 games have been released as downloadable on EU PSN Store too, so I wouldn't see why not.

Let me guess GameSpot, Prince of Persia is another one of those games you won't allow European users to "Add to Owned Games List" before US gets it? You know you're really screwing up some lists with this, don't you?

@SDBusDriver1979 Why compress when you don't have to? Face the facts, Microsoft lost the battle by choosing HD-DVD format over Blu-Ray which puts them behind the curve technologically. Also I never disputed that PS2 games were on a 4.7GB disc. I was stating that the space on a DL-DVD is only double the capacity of a normal DVD which is less than 1/5th of a Blu-Ray disc. And I still disagree with you about Conviction. It was ok but nothing to brag about. I believe PS3 has much better exclusives anyway and if you would like to have that conversation, I'm down -ps3 has way morebetter exclusivesthan the xbox360...in fact I got a 360 for free (after buying a laptop) and traded it to gamestop...what does the360 have gears, compared to the ps3:god of war, mgs4, heavy rain...i can keep going but this just proves the point

hahamanin

@desauce lol its not cause of the dvd & blu-rays.....just look at the sizes of the games when it releases on psn

@desauce You played SC:Conviction on PC, and you think that makes it a crappy game? Do yourself a favor and check out the reviews of Conviction on this very site. The Xbox 360 version got an 8, and the PC version got a 6.5. Just because you decided to play the crappy version of the game, doesn't mean that it sucks, just that you should have played it on the 360 instead, lol. Enjoy playing some great games that the rest of us have already played many times over....oh yeah in HD, lol.

SDBusDriver1979
SDBusDriver1979

@desauce Companies have been using this insignificant little method call compression which allows a large game to fit on to a small disc and then uncompressed when in use with little to no quality or speed loss. The nice thing about the 360 is the DVD drive can read at 16x and can pull files pretty fast. What fills up a game disc is usually fmv cutscenes and audio. Splinter Cell contain no fmv nor was there a lot of chatter. Point in case that Rockstar released Grand Theft Auto Trilogy which has GTA3-San Andres onto one DVD for the PC. Also most PS2 games were on 4.7 GB disc because dual layer disc at the time was expensive and wouldn't make sense from business wise. Actually very few actually needed the 8.5 space. Also Conviction was a great game, not stellar but the reviews it got was quite justified for having an excellent single player and that Spec Ops mode on the side was a lot of fun with a fun. So again yes, sorry PS3 users, better luck next time.

@Jurassic85 I played Conviction on PC and it sucked anyway so don't get all high and mighty with your 1 exclusive. And yes, I will have fun playing my HD remakes while you play your dated versions of the games.

desauce

@metalkid9 Ok so I was wrong, It uses dual layered DVD's. The fact of the matter is that it is still on a DVD. So even with a dual layered DVD whats that give you, 9.4GB max space? With only 8.5GB of useable space lol. Blu-Ray has up to 50GB of space. Also you stated that 2 ps2 games equals almost a dual layer DVD. What you are forgetting is the fact that they have been remastered in HD making each game much larger than a dual layered DVD. So again yes, sorry 360 users, better luck next time.

@ohjtbehaaave Now i understood what you mean, excuse me for my other response then, i didn't knew that quality difference, but i do know that i'd liked more of the SC: DA from the ps2 more than the xbox 360 version, the removal of the HUD was awful, i loved how the ps2 version (or even the pc versions) showed how visible you were, how much ambiental noise, how much noise you are making and some other stuff, but the 360 DA? No hud, no subtitle, pretty much no tutorial since you couldn't understand anything that was being explained. And there's nothing i hated mkore in conviction than BLACK AND WHITE, i mean, when it's b & w you're hidden, great, solves the hud problem, but, really? HD graphics in B&W? I didn't liked the idea, gimme the stealth bar any day over that. To finish, sorry for the other comment, i didn't knew there were differences between those versions, in fact, the only game i knew it changed from ports was RE 4 from GC, then ps2 then pc then wii... And so, thank you for the explanation.

I for one will definatley be picking up the SC collection. Mostly due to the fact that I never got around to playing them at their original release. I think I will pass for a little while on the PoP collection.

The only re-releases I'm looking forward to are the Team Ico ones. Those games could benefit greatly from a framerate boost. The old Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia games, however, played well and looked good when they first came out (on the original Xbox, at least). I have no desire to replay them in HD or 3D or whatever.

There's a lot of talk on here about the old splinter cell games being glitchy and 'flawed' on the PS2, but why do I not remember that when I have owned all of the original Splinter Cell games? The graphics weren't on par to the Xbox i'll agree with that, I played both. But they weren't glitchy at all? And as for 'whole levels missing' I'm pretty sure the Xbox just had bonus levels..? Hmm.. Dunno. Either way Splinter Cell + Trophies = Win :D
