Splinter Cell movie gets The Bourne Identity director

Tom Hardy to star in feature film, which is planned for a 2015 release.

Doug Liman is reportedly in final negotiations to direct Splinter Cell, a film adaptation of Ubisoft's stealth-action game series Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell.

According to Hollywood Reporter, Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr and Mrs Smith) will be developing the movie with New Regency. Tom Hardy has been named to star in the feature film, which has a planned release date of 2015.

The latest entry in the Splinter Cell series, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, was released in August last year for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii U. Ubisoft revealed that game sales failed to meet initial targets, selling approximately 2 million copies last year.

I hope he does that fu#ked up Bane voice.

You will give this movie an identity of its own, Liman (Bourne's identity is already taken) - then you have my permission to die.

they should overdub hardy's lines with ironside's voice

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.

I really hope they us Krav Maga as the main combat system in the movie as they did for Conviction. It's the most logical CQC system for an elite operative.

Yeah I hope they get this right.. Director and actor are very good. Tom Hardy can pull off the gravelly voice too. I hope this gets a decent script.... fingers crossed.

I  definitely hope he doesn't use as many quick camera cuts as he used in Bourne Identity during the fight scenes, Mark Foster had the same problem with Quantum of Solace, and a it make a lot harder to enjoy.  I know it's meant give the fight a greater sense of urgency and chaos, but it easily becomes jarring, and the music score can make up the ground lost by using a longer cuts.

If they keep it realistic and gritty and ease up on the Bourne shaky-cam thing, I'm sold.

The director is very talented and Tom Hardy is a very good actor, if this gets a decent script then it will probably own. Its strange that after all these years the best movies from video games are Mortal Kombat and Silent Hill :/ Also would be so cool to give Michael Ironside a role as Fishers boss or higher up or something :]

make sure to put "In Memory of Tom Clancy" at the end credits

Only thing that will be a little weird about this casting is that Hardy is also set to play Mad Max.  It's hard to have the same actor play two well known characters in two movies that look destined to be franchises.

His scheduling will be tough.

Good actor, good director. What could possibly go wrong ....

Tom Hardy as Sam Fisher directed by Doug Liman who directed the Bourne Identity.  Well I have to say that actually has the makings of a good movie written on it.  Now if they can just get a decent script.

Tom Hardy would be a good choice, even if he is a little short.

Even so...

Tom Hardy doesn't seem like a bad choice at all. If anything, he kinda looks the part.

Great! So who's the cute guy playing Sam Fisher?

I remember originally Kurt Russell was in talks to do the original Sam Fisher back in 2005-2006, but they scrapped the project. I think Tom Hardy is a great choice as long as he doesn't get too buffed. He's not tall, not a body builder, and is a capable actor. I say go for it. The only thing we have to worry about is the script, it will indeed be aimed towards teenagers, not the original audience. So I'm expecting a RoboCop remake esque script with better acting.

Hmm.. while Doug Liman is an interesting choice, but I wonder if he can utilize the usage of high-tech gadget Sam Fisher has in the movie....

Sam Fisher's American. Tom Hardy's English. I can see the voice acting going reeeeeeeal smooth.

I hope Ironside does the voice, otherwise I shall give this a pass. His voice was perfect for the games but Eric Johnson's voice in Blacklist killed the original character for me. It almost felt like it should have been an all new character, not Sam Fisher.

As long as it's not The Bourne Ultimatum director we can be safe.

Playing Splinter Cell: Conviction made me feel like I was playing the Bourne movies which was good because I like all the Bourne movies and if Doug Liman is involved, then Splinter Cell might have a chance to be the best video game movie.

On paper everything about this movie sounds like it could be good, but I don't want Bourne Fisher, I want Sam Fisher. I want a movie in which he was portrayed in the original 3 games.

This could very well be the first great video game movie. Could.

Nice! Hope they make it with the bourne budget and fx. I'm actually glad as long as Uwe Boll doesn't direct.

Oh, and 2 million copies sold, is that bad? I actually bought 2 to give one copy away to a friend, the coop is awesome in Blacklist, the whole game is awesome!

Is it just me or Sam from Double Agent really looks a lot like Bruce Willis .?

Shouldve got Paul Greengrass for Director but whatever.

Good choice for director, supremely dumb choice for actor to play as Sam Fisher. I will not be watching.

Makes sense , the games themselves have become like a Bourne Identity instead of being what it was before .

Tom hardy aint a bit young to play the role?

@Porcupethtonia Liman: "If the movie turns out to be crap, what would you feel when watching it". Bane: "It would be extremely painful"

@berserker66666  I wouldn't be too worried, English folks are usually really good at doing American accents (Not usually too good at Southern Accents like mine though, sounds horrible). Just look at Hunnam I think his name is he played Jax on that show about the scumbag bikers.

jynxten

@berserker66666 Tom Hardy has played Americans in Lawless and Warrior. I'm not American, but the accents sounded fine to me.

@amv12 Yeah.  they could've just as easily kept Sam Fisher and Ironside with the new game. Introduce a new character and have Sam train him and than it's sam talking to him during missions etc.

We'd still have our connection to old time Sam, yet we'd get to experience a new guy or maybe a girl.

They could've even used Archie from Conviction.

Too me it just seems pretty harsh to ditch Ironside, who IS sam fisher, after all this time. I mean both of them are getting to old..It would just make sense that they've both got a desk job instead ;)

@jynxten  I think you mean the Bourne Legacy? That's the one that didn't have matt damon in it and it had one of the worst endings I've ever seen.

@Go32111 If they go Bourne Fisher, they might as well have Lady Gaga on the soundtrack singing Bourne This Way, lol.

@dyze  funny nobody ever says the truth...ironside asked for too much money so they told him to f off and they got a new whipping boy...

jynxten

@Shelledfade1 @jynxten D'oh! You're right. That's the one I meant. It was terrible. The ending was atrocious, though as a science enthusiast it was the story that made me weep the most. They were just saying science-y sounding words with no care to what the words or concepts meant. Your non-scientifically literate viewer might not notice, but I did, and I was not impressed.

Hurvl
Hurvl

@jynxten @Shelledfade1As a scientist, I don't really care about such things in movie like this. Action movies and realism/logic don't (need to) mix, but the "viewers are too stupid to notice" mentality behind this is bad. Almost as bad as that ending.

Shelledfade1
Shelledfade1

@jynxten @Shelledfade1  I felt the same, and I'm not even a scientist lol. This director did the first Bourne Identity, but not the other 2 it seems.
