During the Splatfest, players can pledge their allegiance to SpongeBob or Patrick, and will receive a t-shirt based on their choice. "Squidward was not invited," Nintendo said in a statement about the grumpy character. Despite his name and appearance, Squidward is not actually a squid.

Nintendo marketing executive Scott Moffitt said, "Personally, I'm team SponeBob all the way."

During the course of the one-day Splatfest, the team that racks up the most points in the Turf War online mode will receive an allotment of Super Sea Snails, which can be used to upgrade in-game gear. The SpongeBob-themed Splatest begins April 23 at 6 AM PST and ends on April 24 at 12 PM PST.

This Splatfest is also unique in that it's the first one where players from North America and Europe will be matched together. Previously, players in different regions were kept separate.

As mentioned, this is not Splatoon's first sponsored Splatfest, as Nintendo previously teamed up with Hasbro for a Transformers-themed event where players could choose to side with Autobots or Decepticons.
