TheWrap reports that "two individuals with knowledge of the project" reached out to the publication about Zendaya's role. We've contacted Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios for comment and will update this article as we receive more information.

Mary Jane was played by Kirsten Dunst in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, which started in 2002. The character did not appear in the latest Amazing Spider-Man movies, instead opting for Spider-Man's original love interest, Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone.

Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters on July 7, 2017. It's directed by Jon Watts (Cop Car) and, in addition to Zendaya, stars the likes of Tom Holland (Captain America: Civil War), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Michael Keaton (Batman), Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny), and Donald Glover (Community).

It was confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con that the new Spider-Man movie's villain is The Vulture. Keaton's role is known to be villainous, though it's not confirmed whether or not he will play the flying baddie.
