Spacefaring indie hit FTL's Advanced Edition now available as a free download

Stop what you are doing and download the new FTL update right now. Swish new iPad version also available for $10.

The Advanced Edition update for the fantastic FTL: Faster Than Light is now available as a free download on PC.

Users who own the game on Steam should get the update beamed automatically onto their hard drives using Gaben's special magic powers, and the game's developers have created a page with instructions for those who purchased the game from another outlet.

The free Advanced Edition adds mind control and hacking systems, a new sector, and events written by author Tom Jubert and Fallout: New Vegas scribe Chris Avellone, alongside new weapons, effects, layouts, and environments. The update will also add tweaks to the whole game, including the option to save and quit during combat.

Meanwhile, FTL has now been released for the iPad. The game costs $10 and runs on an iPad 2 or newer, and comes with the Advanced Edition by default.

This game is amazing!

Personally, I like to keep the beacon-path-aid turned off. This way you have to put more thought and heartpounding in your routes.

Great update. Loving all of the new stuff. Honestly my favorite change is how when you hover over your next jump point the game now shows which points you'll be able to jump through from there. It seems like a minor thing, but in a game where every jump can count making a dumb mistake and jumping to a location that won't get you where you want to go can ruin an entire run. So great update.

Also like the changes and updates to the crew movement. A lot of really awesome stuff to make moving your crew around way easier.

Overall this update made a good game into a truly great game. Awesome work!

I got the game during the holiday sales, but still haven't had time to get into it, work and all. Hopefully in a couple of weeks I should be able to try it (it was cheap anyway so even if I don't like it there's no big loss).

you have to read the whole title because I initially thought the game was free but I selectively read the title and not the whole title because there was never a Advanced FTL Edition, What Gamespot should have done was put DLC after it in brackets.

This game was already amazing... now it's even better? Heck yeah.

See, this is how you make DLC - FREE FOR ALL.

So the iTurd gets it but Android doesn't? F*^K THAT!

What about those comic book-style scenes I see in the trailer? Does the game use them for narrative?

Why the hell make another article about this with such a misleading title? The game is not free, the update has always been free... damn your click bait GS

Bad title. It reads as if the game was now free. Please edit it.

@helldragonzer  I got my copy during the steam holiday sale as well. Amazing game. This dlc will defiantly get me back into it.

@lonewolf1044 yeah very misleading theme, you would think an editor would have look at the title before posting it.

helldragonzer

@Butt_Chunx give it a couple of months, and besides $10 bucks for mobile makes no sense since the PC version cost the same, maybe if it was $5, but $10 is too much.

zerohournow

@terrariafan247 this isnt click/bait. There are no microtransactions and it is one of the best games of its type in the last few years.

Zloth2

@observer98 If you would read the byline, it says flat out that the update is free, not the game.  Also note that reading that byline takes about a tenth the time you took to post your complaint.

sokpupet
sokpupet

@helldragonzer It's the exact same game but with touch controls. It's worth $10 on any platform.

Stebsis
Stebsis

@zerohournow @terrariafan247It is bit of a clickbait. It says "now available as free download" with no mention of it being a update to already existing game. It's like they're saying the game itself is free. Something like "FTL's new update now available as free download" would make much more sense.

Ailurusf
Ailurusf

@zerohournow @terrariafan247  Microtransactions? What are you talking about? The misleading part is that the title reads as if the game was now free, while what is free is the update. Just look at all the comments.

sokpupet
sokpupet

@helldragonzer @sokpupetWas I saying this should be the case with every game? No. I'm saying it's the case with FTL. It's a steal at $10 on any platform. It. Not everything.

helldragonzer
helldragonzer

@sokpupet @helldragonzerIf that where the case then XCOM would have been $59.99 on Ipad and Iphone also. Mobile shouldn't be the same as a console, it beats the point of being mobile.

@SingletreeAve  @DarkSaber2k We were so hardcore in those C64 days, if the game failed to load after a half hour of waiting....we just tried again!

Cassettes and 5 1/4 floppy disks that were actually floppy!  And those elitists who bought cartridges for the C64, those guys had serious cash. Those were good times.  *Sigh*

@spartanx169x @Barighm  You are entitled to your opinion but at 40 and having gamed since before graphic card and text based strategy games and text based adventure games were king - I do not see how you can dislike any form of the genre.  I love 3D worlds but still love to go back to neo geo games whenever I can.  Games like this one where there is strategy involved are great in their 2D form and gain very little from being anything more than what they are.

Consider this.

For a small dev its easier and cost effective to get the concept of the game out the door providing sprite based graphics over trying to pump it all into a 3D engine.  I personally am very happy to see these small games, they are perfect for tablets and phone and at time can be more funny than a big 3D generated empty lifeless world.

@Barighm I'm not arguing which one is better . I play games to get immersed into a different world. 2D does not give me that. So they are fun for about 10 minutes and I'm bored. That are simply not entertaining for me.  Like I have said multiple times. Its a simple matter of preference. I've tried them. They simply bore me .But again if you like them good for you.

@spartanx169x @blackpuddytat  I don't think that FTL would claim that it's graphical candy by any means, but I think that it's appeal lies in that it has such tight mechanics in combat and resource management. It's simple to learn but there's a lot to master through multiple playthroughs and it's a great game to play for an hour or two in between playing other bigger AAA games.

There's some really tense action to be had, coupled with it's risk vs reward moments. Sometimes these types of games are just evolutions of D&D type boardgames, albeit the dice rolls and rules/mechanics are handled behind the scenes and you're just left to enjoy the action and story.

I think there's a simple joy in games like these, some are just mindless fun and others like FTL do a few things but do them so very well. Indie developers know that their games won't appeal to everybody, but most already know their intended audience/market and are usually happy to make a decent living in selling to them.

Barighm
Barighm

@spartanx169xThe point of games is to be fun. Whether they're 2D or 3D is completely irrelevant: a good game is a good game. I can easily argue real-life games are better than your 3D.
Avoiding 2D is only hurting yourself.

nl_skipper
nl_skipper

@spartanx169x  That's one of the most ridiculous things I've seen anyone say honestly...  no offence intended, it just seems more than a bit silly to discredit 2D games just because 3D has become mainstream...

And riding a bicycle is a lot better than riding a car for many reasons, just as riding a car is better than riding a bike for many other reasons...  basically there's room to enjoy both, just as there is with 3D and 2D games.

PS, this games rocks!

spartanx169x
spartanx169x

@blackpuddytat @spartanx169x Where I'm going with the questions is this, like I said below, Playing 2D games now  like riding a bicycle to get where you want to go instead of driving a car. A very nice car. It baffles me. There is an obvious fanbase for these games. no denying that. If you like them, good for you , I won't criticize you. If that's what you like its cool .Its simply a matter of preference. Myself I lost complete interest in 2d games once the first xbox and PS1 came along.
