Mastiff has today announced that it plans to release Space Raiders exclusively for the GameCube in North America next month. The game, which has been developed by Taito, is described as the first true 3D sequel to the 1978 Space Invaders arcade game, and it is expected to retail for just $19.99. A PlayStation 2 version of the game titled Space Invaders: Invasion Day was released in Europe last year.

In Space Raiders, players assume the role of one of three characters searching for friends in an unnamed major city after aliens have invaded. The game has the appearance of a third-person action game, but it actually plays in much the same way as the original Space Invaders, with the player strafing from left to right along the bottom of the screen and able to take cover behind oil drums and other objects. The game boasts both a single-player story mode and a cooperative survival mode for two players.

We'll bring you more information on Space Raiders as soon as it becomes available.
