South Park, KOTOR dev outlines its future; Wheel of Time not included

Obsidian wouldn't necessarily turn down the chance to work on Star Wars or Fallout again.

by

Having wrapped up development on South Park: The Stick of Truth not long ago, Obsidian is not resting on its laurels. Even with two projects in the works, the primarily RPG-focused developer continues to look toward the future--a future which will include another Kickstarter project, but not the Wheel of Time game it was previously slated to create.

In an interview with CVG, Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart addressed the realities of being an independent developer in today's market. "Right now, fewer major games are being worked on by independent developers than almost any time in the games industry," he said. "That's one of the challenges of being an independent developer right now. We could be done making a big game like South Park and then no publisher has a slot at that time to have a big team work on a big RPG. That kind of puts us in a really weird situation as a business."

To some extent, that explains the company's current trajectory. It's working on Pillars of Eternity, a crowdfunded computer RPG that received so much more funding than anticipated that it ended up being delayed (it's now coming later in 2014), and Armored Warfare, a free-to-play game in the vein of World of Tanks.

What it isn't working on is the game adaptation of The Wheel of Time fantasy novel series, which it was set to co-develop with Red Eagle Entertainment back in 2010. According to Urquhart, Red Eagle never got the needed funding, causing the agreements between the two companies to dissolve. "So there's really no connection any more between us and Red Eagle as it relates to the Wheel of Time stuff," Urquhart explained.

As for what lies beyond its two currently announced projects, Urquhart said the company continues to talk to publishers about bigger RPG projects--although it will make games of all sizes. His vision for the company five years from now includes a Skyrim-style Pillars of Eternity game in addition to the isometric version (mind you, this isn't an announcement of such a game), and he said he wouldn't turn down the opportunity to work on another Fallout or Star Wars game.

What we know is coming for sure is another game that will turn to Kickstarter for funding, which he hopes will happen "before the end of the year."

"I think we've got a good idea," he said. "I'm not going to share anything, but a few times in my career I have these things where I say, 'Hey, that's a cool idea!' and I've generally been right. So I think this one's going to be a cool thing."

As for what kind of game it will be, the only hint he would provide is something anyone familiar with the developer's history--it's developed Fallout: New Vegas, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, and Neverwinter Nights 2, among other games--could guess: It'll be an RPG.

I'd love to help fund another development by Obsidian, but I'm going to wait until I have Pillars of Eternity before I go that route again. Of the four games I've kickstarted, none have yet to deliver the final product and I'm wary on doing more for the amount that I fund at until I see some results.

Having said that, I'd be excited to see another RPG from Obsidian.

I am guessing the South Park game doesn't have much replay value since I don't see very much on it lately. Most games that do have many follow up articles or things related to that. Still, I have to play this game as a big South Park fan.

I'd love a new Fallout by Obsidian. They did good on the most recent Fallout outing, so this ought to be cool.

Yeah, I'd be great if Obsidian did another Star Wars RPG, but even better if they weren't rushed. No matter how much I admire the mod community's efforts of restoring and fixing Kotor 2, it's always better to have a complete game from the beginning.

KotOR 3 please? Pretty please? I wouldn't say no to Neverwinter Nights 3 either. Because it seems Bioware not to screw up with DAI.

I might be in the minority here, but Neverwinter Nights 3 is what I'd want to see above anything else.

Let them make KOTOR 3 on Frostbite EA!

Well, I'm happy with South Park for now. I do have NWN2, but never got the chance to load it on my Pc and play it. Fallout 3 is great. I'd be happy with them making another Fallout game or even another Star Wars game. Maybe Disney will come calling for them in the neat future.

Never played Fallout 3 (currently playing New Vegas) but didn't Obsidian's Fallout do worse than Bethesda's, making it not worth while letting them make Fallout again?

Obsidian is like the only choice to develop another Fallout game or any Fallout game. Mainly because many of the staff had worked on Fallout 1&2, not to mention the Ultimate Edition of New Vegas.

*sigh*

Even if Bethesda hired Obsidian to make another Fallout they would probably tie their hands with an unrealistic deadline and then everyone would whine about bugs.

I just wish we could get Alpha Protocol 2.

FALLOUT! Bethesda MUST let obsidian do another Fallout but this time around without rushing it and not slacking while doing QA.

Another South Park game wouldn't go amiss. I've just recently been playing through it and is excellent.

BEST. LICENCE. GAME. EVER?

I will most likely be happy with all of the above. Obsidian isn't the master of polishing games but they really put their heart into them and a lot of times give you enough content to truly be pleased. I don't think I've ever not enjoyed an Obsidian title.

I want Neverwinter Nights 3. We need another D&D based game.

One of the best RPG developers out there right now. Please don't get bought by EA.

If I were to guess, I'd say they are working on Icewind Dale III.

Good.  More Obsidian RPGs is a good thing.

He should be grateful the "Wheel of Time" thing fell through.  That has to be one of the worst fantasy stories ever written, unless you like reading about Nynaeve pulling on her hair braid to the tune of 600 or so pages.

@Gladestone1  i agree with you - i loved alpha protocol so much!!! i really don't know why it was so under rated.  it was such a fun game, with so many things to do.

@bernard978  New Vegas improved on Fallout 3 so much. I know some people prefer the atmosphere of Fallout 3, but the interlocking stories/systems of New Vegas made it pure awesome.

@bernard978 Fallout 3 was great once you got the Operation Anchorage DLC at the very least, you can get a GOTY edition pretty much anywhere for cheap which includes all of the DLC.

@deathstream Keep preaching it, brother. They honestly just need to make a spiritual successor--something with some different mechanics, but with the same general flow and ideas in place.

@punksterdaddy South Park has some bugs (cutscene crashes on PS3), aside from that it's a solid game.

@Suaron_x If they really want to make a great book-based game, "A Song of Ice and Fire" is begging for a decent game. Both that have been released thus far have been mediocre at best.

@Suaron_x  Heh, I have 2 friends that were obsessed with it and would talk about it all the time.

@Suaron_x  I just finished reading the series.  Yes, all 14 books.

The beginning and the end were great, but the middle 5 or 6 books were a serious slog.

I hated the way Jordan repeated things over and over and never let his characters commit to an opinion without qualifying it those problems got worse as he dragged out the later books..  It's unfortunate the guy who took over after his death was a breath of fresh air.

The braid tug could have been a skill in the game.  It would cause any wool-headed fool of a man to make a saving throw vs. nagging.

@Suaron_x sounds like someone is jealous the women's circle hasn't given them their braid yet ;-)

@pip3dream @Gladestone1  The RPG element of that game is gold, but what had been criticized about that game is it combat , gameplay ...etc of it

@apolloooo @holtrocksYeah, MMO's - the final destination of IP's. I have no hope that there will be another Kotor game after SWToR has been shut down, let alone while it's still running. My only hope lies in the hands of the Emperor (of Arts), EA.

@ggregd @Suaron_x I've made it to book 8 and couldn't push on any more. Jordan does excellent work on dialogues and world setting and stuff, but the complete lack of character development hits me really hard. I mean, Rand and gang started off from their town as brats knowing nothing about nothing. Half a dozen books later, some of them got married, some gained seriously power, still they talk and behave just like the clueless brats they used to be. Man that is not acceptable, especially when the clueless state of main characters slow the pace of the story to a crawling drag. And I seriously hate Nynaeve's braid-tugging. You are now a full adult and no one ever told you to quit sucking your thumbs? It would be great if someone could produce a TL;DR version game out of the books.

@honglong17 Dunno, seems i am in the monority also, because to me the game was almost perfect - everything wise( i dont rate graphics very much )
