Soul of the Ultimate Nation Impressions - Overview

We take a brief look at this upcoming free-to-play fantasy online game at E3 2009.

Soul of the Ultimate Nation is one of many free-to-play massively multiplayer online games present at E3 2009, though unfortunately, it was present only as a brief trailer. The game will apparently be launched stateside by Ijji.com.

Who's Making This Game: SUN was originally developed by WebZen and launched in Asia in 2007, though it's being adapted for North American audiences by Huxley PC publisher Ijji.com.

What The Game Looks Like: SUN looks like a colorful hack-and-slash online role-playing game with plenty of knights in exaggeratedly bulky armor and wizards tossing colorful particle effects.

What There Is To Do: Kill monsters, gain treasures, gain experience levels, join an in-game guild, and eventually participate in high-end player-versus-player battles.

How The Game Is Played: You can choose one of five characters: the dragon knight, the berserker, the valkyrie, the elementalist, and the shadow. After you've chosen your character, you use it to go out into the world and kill stuff.

What They Say: SUN will be a fun and addictive hack-and-slash game with a "cash-op" microtransaction store, though Ijji.com isn't commenting on what will be sold there.

What We Say: Considering that the game was originally released two years ago, Ijji.com has its work cut out for it to make the game competitive with the many, many, many, many free-to-play fantasy online games out there. SUN will be launched in the US later this year.

Subscription games are not necessarily better than free-2-play. I've played 50+ MMOs and this game is better than WoW.Most MMOs (for me) at some point develop a fatal flaw and then I stop playing them. Comparing it to Silkroad, at least in SuN you can't carry horses in your backpack :)

Or maybe it's just you who belive this game is bad. Do you speak for the entire human kind? Let people make their own decisions whatnot this game is bad or not. Yikes.

I was gunna say - isn't this game like every other free to play fantasy mmo? Silk Road anyone?

Free games... always so much worse than subs. Except for the free part, I suppose. I'd rather pay for better gameplay and content overall than lousy content and pay for items and gear though.

The market is getting flooded with free-to-play MMOs. Most of them don't do enough to distinguish themselves from the hundreds of other clones that get released -- it's honestly to the point where I just tune a game out the second I hear "free-to-play". There may not be much to go on in this brief preview, but what is there makes it sound (not surprisingly) like just another face in the crowd of mediocrity, doing nothing to set itself apart.

Yet another MMO no one seems to be interested in.
