Sony working to make sure PlayStation 4 won't sell out at launch, says CEO

Jack Tretton says PS4 production yields have been "phenomenal" and that the company is working to ensure stock will be available at launch.

by

Sony's American CEO Jack Tretton has said that the company is holding back stock of the PlayStation 4 so machines will be available in stores on launch day.

When asked by Fox Business about how many current preorders Sony had for the PlayStation 4, Tretton said that "it's everything we can manufacture. We want to make sure that consumers have an opportunity to buy one on November 15, and through the holidays, so we're holding back some inventory to make sure that people will have an opportunity to buy one."

"We can pre-sell every unit we can manufacture," added Tretton, before saying that "production yields have been phenomenal, so this will be, by a magnitude of a lot, the biggest launch we've ever had."

When pressed to give a number, Tretton said that Sony was unlikely to publicly release an updated figure--Sony announced that the PlayStation 4 had been preordered by a million customers at Gamescom 2013--but said that "there's so much pent-up demand for it that you could sell every one that you could create."

Praising the new hardware, Tretton said that Sony was at "an all-time high right now" and that the PlayStation 4 "is the crown jewel in what has been a tremendous road for us since the debut of the original PlayStation here back in September of '95."

Elsewhere in the interview, Tretton said that the PlayStation 4's advantages over Microsoft's Xbox One was the game lineup and $100 cheaper price.

The PlayStation 4 will launch on November 15 in North America and on November 29 in Europe.

"Sony working to make sure PlayStation 4 won't sell out at launch, says CEO"

The same could have been said about Microsoft, earlier this year.

They are going to sell out why even bother posting this?

this is so ..... they will say anything.......    do you honestly think this is possible..... they don't or cant know how many people are interested in buying a console.... this is just to get you in the doors looking for one......  worthless information...

I think the game lineup is way superior on xbox. Don't hate me, just my opinion.

We all knew this but there were others trying to reject reality:

PS4 'noticeably faster' than Xbox One, sources claim

Some highlights

Multiple high-level game development sources have described the difference in performance between the consoles as “significant” and “obvious.”

Our contacts have told us that memory reads on PS4 are 40-50 per cent quicker than Xbox One, and its ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) is around 50 per cent faster

Everywhere in the Netherlands the PS4 has been sold out for a while and getting a console at launch or even this year could no longer be guaranteed. If this is true, I might get my PS4 before christmas after all, which would make me very happy indeed.

Although I've been a faithful PS brand costumer for the past 15 years I won't buy it at launch. I never did that with any system I have.

Take your time. Do not want any faulty ones because they were rushed to meet preorders.

This is good news but bad for me, in Australia we pay $500 for the PS4 and $600 on the xbone. i wanted to buy from overseas seeings though they will get the cheaper prices.

I do like it that they are doing this for people like me who don't do the preorder thing, but with the demand it won't last long at all on the store shelves. I just hope I can get lucky and randomly wander into a store and find one. I will wait if I have to as it's my fault for not preordering.

I hope this means that not just America will have more then enough but also the rest, like Europe. I pre ordered my PS4 but hope I can switch it to the Killzone pack, that should only be 100 extra and you get a extra joystick, the camera and the game. No brainer, but I can probably only do that if they get more then just the pre orders.

That's now. I'll be waiting for the 2016 price drop.

This sounds good because I couldn't preorder it... It just gives me the opportunity to save up some money for the console and a game

I hope they succeed and that there will be stock available. That means that all those vultures that buy dozens to sell them overpriced will have to do some other business.

I'm gonna buy an Xbox and put it in the  corner of my room, and make it watch me play my PS4...I wonder what will happen?

There is just no good reason to pre order anything the small cost or stupid thing you get free is a fraction of the money your throwing away for a chance its going to flop or break. New hardware never works right when it comes out

no way people are that stupid to buy a console at launch

this is all hype to make sure people pre-order

@Darkfall_05 I'll volunteer to help with that process! They might not be full Japanese but close enough!

@Filaipus How can a lineup be stronger at launch what is it like 20 games total? Not really representative of much long term which is where the real winners are decided.

@pa_amb_tomaquet

It will watch you and report you to Micro$oft or ask you to trade in your PS4 towards Xbox games at the nearest Micro$oft store.

Kinect's not required to use the Xbox One anymore, you can take it out and it'll still work.

So, they've 180'd the last major qualm most people have had with the console.  As for me, I'm going to wait and see what MS will do next before making a decision.  The stuff they tried to pull at E3 2013 was horrifying and it was really really easy for Sony to tear them a new one and force all the 180's after that.

Still, who knows what MS will try to pull next if they get a big userbase, at this point I wouldn't put anything past them.

@quickshooterMk2 I thought he was saying they WON'T sell out at launch, meaning there are plenty to go around, meaning people don't have to pre-order one, which is why they'll be able to get one not only on launch day but also through the holidays.

Filaipus

@abcdefgabcdefgz @Filaipus I totally agree but we were talking about the launch lineup (believe me, many people buy their consoles based on that) and i believe the xbox one is way better.

I've always preferred the xbox exclusives actually, but like i said, its a matter of taste :)

tightwad34

@freedom01 Yeah, a 6,000 dollar farce. Nah, but for real how do you trust ebay? I don't know how it works because I've never even bothered checking it out. Just seems like it's too easy to get scammed.

@xiiraveniix @quickshooterMk2

They might still sell out on launch day. Sony is limiting the amount available for pre-orders so that there are consoles on shelves at launch for those who didn't pre-order. It doesn't make your company look good to advertise a console that isn't there on the advertised date.

@Filaipus @abcdefgabcdefgz the zombie game and the quick time game.nah not worth spending 500 hundred for.i like my odds better with ps4. more in house developers working on  titles.sony will no doubt have the games.

but as of right now. there are lots of games on my ps3 to play. next gen can wait.

@chayhandsome @Hardcoreehb @Razarealm It's called tariffs. It's suppose to tax imported electronics to make people develop domestic ones. But lets face it only like a handful of countries even make electronics. South America, specifically Brazil, had high tariffs on electronics. They soon realized you lose more money due to lost economic development because you have to use a old brick as opposed to an imported smartphone.

AU has higher prices because its an island in the middle of an ocean with a small market and in a completely different language than it's neighbors. So most of AU's good have to be shipped from the US or EU markets across an ocean or two. Even from Korea or Japan is a far. Until the world develops some cheap and quick ships or aircraft, your prices in AU will always be higher. Plus you pay in AU Dollars. I do feel for AU though, great country, great people.

xiiraveniix
xiiraveniix

@pa_amb_tomaquet @Dav_id83 @abcdefgabcdefgzTrue, and I agree also, but if you've got cash to burn, they are getting cheaper these days, I think less than half the price PS3 was at launch. I wasn't interested in these new consoles as there aren't really any games for them yet, but it's tempting to buy one just to give MS the middle finger and let Sony know they're on the right track.

And although reliability is always a question with new consoles (I had early model PS1 and Xbox consoles die on me), I don't think it will "flop", meaning that I have no doubt lots of great games will be released for it to make it worth the price of admission.

Also, while they make these systems more reliable and cheaper with each iteration, they also remove a lot of small things, like backward compatibility with the PS3. I still wish I bought a PS3 earlier so I didn't need to have my PS2 hooked up to play older games.
