Sony: Uncharted Is a "Good Candidate" for a PS4 HD Remaster -- Which Game Would You Bring Forward?

But at the same time, worldwide studios boss Shuhei Yoshida says Sony does not want to "flood the market" with remade games, either.

Sony's Naughty Dog studio is bringing 2013 PlayStation 3 action game The Last of Us to the PlayStation 4 this month with a special Remastered version, but high-definition remakes from Sony might not stop there. In a new interview, PlayStation Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida teased that the Uncharted series is a possibility for an HD re-release.

"There are requests from some consumers for games that were released later in the generation, like Uncharted, which people might have missed," Yoshida told Eurogamer. "That would be a good candidate." At the same time, however, Yoshida stressed that the company does not want to "flood the market with remade games, either."

Another first-party Sony game being re-made for the PS4 is the original Ratchet & Clank. This project was announced at E3, but we have yet to see any footage for the game or learn any other details beyond the fact that it is supposed to be released alongside the Ratchet & Clank movie in 2015.

Some have criticized Sony (and Microsoft, too) for re-releasing older games for new consoles. But according to Yoshida, data shows that half of the current PS4 owners never bought a PS3, meaning The Last of Us Remastered and other potential remakes would be completely new experiences to these players.

"Almost 50 percent of people who have purchased a PS4 didn't own a PS3, and that's lots of people that missed exclusive PS3 titles like The Last of Us," Yoshida said, citing a Nielsen study. "So it's a great way to welcome those people back to PlayStation, saying this is what you missed."

Yoshida didn't say if it was Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (2007), Uncharted: Among Thieves (2009), or Uncharted: Drake's Deception (2011) that was the strongest contender for a PS4 remake. There is also the possibility that Sony would bundle all three together as part of some kind of Nathan Drake Collection, a la Microsoft's The Master Chief Collection for Xbox One.

A fourth entry in the mainline Uncharted series, Uncharted: A Thief's End, is coming to PS4 in 2015.

If you were in charge at Sony, which Uncharted game(s) would you want to bring forward to the PS4? Let us know in the comments below!

Absolutely all 3 of them!!! I'd buy it in a heartbeat! Got rid of ps3 when I got my ps4 and that's one series I miss playing through.

Even though the Uncharted series ran great on PS3, apart from some slight screen tear on the first one, I would love a full remastered trilogy taking the graphics to the next level. ND obviously don't have the resource to do all 3 simultaneously, so choosing were to start is a difficult one. If they are intending to remaster them all eventually, you obviously have to start at the first to cure that screen tear and kick the story off. If ND are just going to do one to test the waters before committing to another, then that is not going to work unless you do the first game first.

But if ND are only ever going to remaster one game, it has to be the best overall, so that's Uncharted 2 without a doubt. But there is some controversy here. The U2 gunplay seemed perfect at the time and when they changed it for U3, we all complained because it was a steep learning curved and very different. But it turned out that once you actually got use to the U3 gunplay and ND fine tuned it perfectly, it was far superior, making U2 feel quite spongy and sluggish when you return to play it now. So I'm thinking they should definitely transplant U3 gunplay onto the U2 remaster to make it the game perfect, but that is going to be sacrilege to those that loved it as is and could not make the transition to the new style in U3. I have several friends who gave up too early on U3 because they could not cope with the change and refuse to play it when U3 is actually the best version for multiplayer coop.

If ND are just going to remaster one to test the waters before committing to another, then that is not going to work unless they do the first game first. Uncharted 3 was amazing graphics but the story was painfully linear. But once you got used to the revamped gunplay, Uncharted 3 coop multiplayer is definitely the best for replay value in the long term. I'm still playing U3 coop arena now, 2 hours per night even though I have a PS4. Ideally I would be prepared to wait for a complete Trio remaster set at a reasonable price with all the multiplayer in tact using U3 gunplay.

Why stop there,Resistance,Ratchet and Clank,re-remaster the original ratchet and Clank trilogy, again with Sly,why stop at exclusives, remaster Battlefield 4 from PS3 to PS4 even though it is on PS4,hell remaster the damn thing anyway, who needs new games,Sony already pulled the plug on Vita and apprently it's keeping the PS4 on life-support too with standalone DLC and remasters, they haven't announced a ratchet and Clank game for PS4,the alst one on PS3 being a 5 hour game which is embarassing.

Would only buy it if it's sold for $30 or $60 if included with UC4.

This would be amazing for the people who haven't played the original trilogy, Uncharted games very much stand on there own as individual adventures though so I wouldn't say you're required to play the original trilogy to enjoy Uncharted 4, but I'd recommend it.

As long as these remakes don't take resources away from the studio(resources that could be working on a real PS4 game) then I don't care and as I said, I think this would be amazing for the people who have missed out on this series.

Sony....you have a vita and a brand new system with nothing but remakes of games we enjoyed in the past. It's time to move on. Did you run out of ideas?

I love the Idea of remastering all of the top PS3 exclusives for the PS4!! GOW series, Uncharted series, Metal Gear 4, Heavy Rain, Killzone 3, Journey! Pretty sure there are few more games that were missed by the more souls who simply didn't know better and was stuck with xbox.

If Microsoft can release Halo 1-4 remastered for $60, Sony better release all the Uncharted games, or it should cost like $20.

And there's still people that think the PS4 its a great option for gaming, Sony is making the PS4 the console for microsoft "traitors", bringing them remakes of PS3 titles, and what about us Sony? the ones that walk with you since the beginning? the ones that support you when the PS2 launch was mocked by Sega and the Dreamcast? the ones that stay with you when the PS3 was in third place in the "console war"? the ones that want NEW AND AMAZING GAMES for buying a PS4? for us there's nothing? SCREW YOU THEN!

Dont you find it ridiculous, when hermits say pc has limitless backwards capability?

I understand PS4 could have PS3 backwards playability, PS2 has PS1 etc...

Wii has Gabecube backwards catalog etc....

How the fuck you can mention PC and Sony in the same sentence????

IS Sony, Nintendo and Sega part of PC franchise?????!!!!!

Hermit logic at it's finest.

In fairness this should be done for ONLY the best titles.  Let's face it if you've not played any of the Uncharted games, you've missed out.  Again 'The Last of Us' was a lot of fun too.  I easily get bored with the Meh of FPS multiplayer games.  I'm too old for that.  But that's my opinion.

I think if they're gonna do it then it needs to be released as a 'Triple AAA' pack (see what I did there).  Release for a good price and they'll sell.  Hell, I'd buy them again.

Seems "Remastered" is becoming a trend this generation.

.......Remaster Ape Escape 1, 2 and 3. Those games alone would make me buy a PS4.

mr_azim

Uncharted 1 and 2 would be great....... 3 looked good enough but didn't capture me as much as the first two.

cameroncr95
cameroncr95

Which game would you bring forward? Obviously the first. It would just be weird to bring Uncharted 2 or 3 instead of the first. The first started it all.

But considering how Uncharted is such a high selling series, it would seem like Sony would pull a "Master Chief Collection" and bring out something like the "Uncharted Collection" for PS4 that would feature remastered 1,2,3 as well as a port of Golden Abyss.

homerlvsbeer

yes i agree all the uncharted games would be nice to see those upgraded graphically. Id like to see one of my old favourites remastered. Dante's Inferno. that was a great game. Dante's Inferno Rebuffed and Remastered. i like the ring to it. yes do this game sony pls.

Hopefully they remaster all the Uncharted games and release it for $60. Also, it will be great if they remaster God of War series as well.

gog3ta08
gog3ta08

The real reason I believe all these remaster discussions are going on is because Sony put the ps4 out too early. .... game developers weren't ready for the 4. Ps3 was just beginning to reach its potential and it took how many years. So it's the same thing for ps4. It won't capture its true essence for another 4 years. But I am a loyal Sonyist so I'll wait it out n continue the ride.

Another boring HD remastering? How about developing some new, truly next gen games, huh, sony?

@magus334 LOL! They have one, single, remake... The Last Of Us. That's it, out of around 80-100 games available on PS4 right now. Put it this way- I'm yet to play a remake of anything on my PS4 which I own 40 games for.

xXxIRyanxXx
xXxIRyanxXx

@Xander_108 If people wanted to play those games they could go to Gamestop buy a PS3 and then buy all those games for way cheaper then a PS4 + $50 for each game. If you want to spend hundreds on remastered games that are in bargain bins more power to you.

@xXxIRyanxXx Or ,you know, make new games and give you backwards compatiblity like some other hated company.

@mr_azim 3rd just sucked greatly at gameplay department, and the first one was highly flawed because of it's sadistic AI. Only the second one is up to it's reputation as one of the best games of PS3.

@gog3ta08 Are you kidding? PS4 should've come out at least two years ago. Just look how badly PS3 and 360 run games like Far Cry 3, Bioshock Infinite and Metro Last Light compared to PC.

tonytones21
tonytones21

@se007 These HD remakes are for people who had an xbox 360 and the bought a PS4.

Xander_108
Xander_108

@xXxIRyanxXx Of course I can understand where you are coming from... and I completely understand why people go out a buy the iPhone 3gs used in this day and age when they could get a 5. I love the PS3 but my PS4 simply does everything a lot better and faster. I would rather see Drake and Kratos do their thing in 1080p at 60fps with little to no load times, then....be able to share the awesomeness at the click of a button and I'm pretty sure there are a few millions others. Once you go PS4, it's hard to go back!

justerthought

@xXxIRyanxXx @Xander_108

Not true. I stopped buying as many PS3 games that I would have preferred. About half way through the PS3 life cycle, it was pretty clear the 3rd party games were pushing it far too hard without optimising the CELL. The result was blurred graphics and horrendous screen tear.

The 1st party games were fine so I just saved my money and continued to play U3 coop, hoping the PS4 would be better. The only PS3 games I bought in recent years were Skyrim, FC3, AC3, GTAV and The Last Of Us.

The PS4 plays each game brilliantly so I will be buying loads of games this time around and definitely open to buying remasters of all the great games on PS3 that I chose to miss because they ran like crap.

bdiddytampa

@se007 @mr_azim Uncharted 2 still blows my mind, among the best of the generation for sure.  I still enjoyed 3, just not as much as 2.

cameroncr95
cameroncr95

@se007 @gog3ta08 What? That is completely opposite. Next Gen should not have happened for 2 more years. Infact, Sony and MS even said their PS3/360 would have a 10 year cycle.

Those big games like Watch Dogs, GTA V, Beyond 2 Souls, Last Of Us coming out on last gen consoles with such great graphics are a sign PS3 and 360 had life left.

se007
se007

@tonytones21 @se007 These remakes are nothing more than a quick and cheap moneygrab for lazy sony, just like their indies flood.

se007
se007

@cameroncr95 @se007 @gog3ta08 Console versions ran like crap for at least 2-3 years. 10 year cycle only halts game design and graphics progress, console makers should opt for 5-6 year one.

cameroncr95
cameroncr95

@se007 @tonytones21 Cheap Money Grab for "Lazy Sony"?

Do you even know how hard it actually is to remaster and port a game? How much is costs to pay the devs doing it? Obviously not or you wouldn't have made that retarded comment.

se007
se007

@cameroncr95 @se007 @tonytones21 It's obviously cheaper than making brand new game on a new engine, with completely new art, story, level design, voiceover, etc. If you want to play old games, just buy the PS3 for Christsakes! But no, sonyboys are just ready to eat everything they beloved corporation gonna throw at them - indies, hd remakes, you name it!

KiriharaZro

@se007

I agree, but many (still) loyal gamers to sony like me aren't buying a PS4 for this reason, and many, I bet, are thinking in abandon the ship, not in favor of Xbox One or PC

PSPhoenix13
PSPhoenix13

@se007 @cameroncr95 @tonytones21 I think a remastered pack would be great. I've never owned any version of Playstation, but was thinking about making the jump to PS4 from the Xbox 360. Last year I was actually thinking about picking up a PS3 just to play some of the exclusives like Uncharted and the Last of Us that I have missed. The only thing that kept me from buying was the value in picking up a PS3 for only a handful of games. I'd be super excited if they decided to basically remaster and re-release all the games I had missed out on. Saves me the money I'd be spending on an older console
