Sony to donate $150,000 for Philippines relief efforts

PlayStation maker will also donate 400 emergency radios to communities affected by superstorm that is estimated to have claimed 10,000 lives.

Sony Corp. today announced that it will make a donation of ¥15 million ($150,000) to support the ongoing relief efforts for the communities affected by the typhoon that devastated the Philippines after making landfall on Friday.

It was not announced which relief support group the money would go to.

The $150,000 donation includes a sum from Sony Corp., as well as donations raised from Sony Group employees, whose contributions were matched by Sony Corp.

In addition to the monetary donation, Sony will provide 400 emergency radios to local communities affected by the superstorm.

"Sony sends its sincerest condolences to all those affected by Typhoon Haiyan and wishes for a full and swift recovery," the company said in a statement.

Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines on Friday. Officials believe the death toll could reach 10,000, though this figure may be on the low side.

Good job Sony. Let's all keep in mind they are about to make hundreds of millions of dollars. So...maybe......donate a bit more. :)

Well, that's good on you Sony. That is a horrifically tragic and unfortunate situation for a LOT of people. I really want to do something big for them, but I don't have the means. I will do something whether that be donating food or supplies, or whatever else I can.

And MS sends a bunch of Xbox One's requiring Internet and Gold subscriptions.

Good for them. I just hope it goes to good use. This was truly a tragedy. The death toll has already passed 2500 confirmed and is going up every day. I cannot imagine what these people are going through. I can only hope the 10,000 estimate is way too high.

I hope it doesn't go to the corrupt politician's pockets.

Also... Can I have a free PS4? We lost 5 trees because of that typhoon. :D

China and Vietnam as whole countries are donating $100000 each. (at least $200000 for a Mercedes S class in Vietnam)

so stop bitching about how "little" Sony's donation is. Everything counts

very nice but I really think 150,000 is nothing as a company compared to actors/ athletes give 1 million to them and that's just one person. I don't want to down play it because they gave unlike most companies just seem like a little money, But some is better then none

Good job Sony

I can't remember the last time my country got this much aid from the international community. Simply overwhelming.

I think it's easy to not grasp the extent of the damage and loss of life there. I'm sure I can't comprehend it to it's fullest. Either way, I'm glad to see companies sending aid.

This is a really nice thing to do but I think Sony can pony up more than this, half that money is gonna be wasted getting the supplies it buys to the places they're needed most.

Still it's more than I donated but having a charity promotion where people can choose to donate through PSN would have netted way more money, especially if it asked if you'd like to donate X amount of $ when you buy a game or dlc.

All things aside, I like seeing companies helping out like this.  The need for aid is huge over there right now and I really hope to see more companies follow suit (as they usually do in times like this).  Kudo's sony, nice job.

Unfortunately, they need supplies directly. it will take weeks/months for money to have any effect and depending on the organization,  half might not even make it there to buy supplies.

Especially in the Philippines.

@mythical_gamer All your comments have been in bad taste so all your opinions are now being ignored, they did a good thing while you sit there and criticize.

Why turn this into a console war? Were you dropped on your head at birth or something?

xsonicchaos
xsonicchaos

@Nyrex I was not. Have I offended you in any way? If not, why are you trying to offend me? I asked a question, I thought it's funny, but it's clear that some people are so narrow-minded that everything has to turn into a conflict. But, you know, children... You have to speak your mind, you can't ignore something that contradicts your own opinions, stuff like that. So, I understand.

@mythical_gamer @cvjr Sony's ability isn't what matters. The deed itself is, and I doubt those effected would shake their heads at 150,000. They may be able to do better, but that doesn't make 150K any less beneficial.

@pszone @R2C25 @xsonicchaos don't know about MS because not every donors' made public of their donations.  While Sony donating money is not a bad thing but since you bring up that kind of comment,  it is Sony the one that makes me think they are the one thinks it's competition by announcing their donations as publicity stunt ahead of their PS4 launch when they have the choice to donate anonymously but chose not to.

@galactic88 He's still on the board but other than that, he is retired.  Him and his wife give away crazy amounts of money every year to their charity among others that help kids and a ton of other people.  Say what you want, he has done more than most when it comes to things like this.

nickpeck36
nickpeck36

@pszone @R2C25 @xsonicchaos Oh give me a break.  If they cared so much they wouldn't have hold people to deal with the ps3's $600 launch, they wouldn't have made exploding laptop batteries, they wouldn't have let hackers destroy their network (the list can go on)...  they are a company that sells products, they want your money too.

triton1977

@galactic88 He has still probably donated more money during that time than anyone at Sony have ever made all together in their lifetimes. I just wanted to shut that idiot up. =)

@warhawk-geeby @triton1977 Let's also remember Bill Gates is no longer officially with Microsoft and donating this money out of his own choice.
