Sony to answer Congress' PSN outage questions

[UPDATE] PlayStation-maker won't appear at tomorrow's hearing on data security, but is providing responses to lawmakers ahead of May 6 deadline; network still down.

by

[UPDATE] On Wednesday, Sony offered answers to all the Subcommittee's questions. Detailed information on the attack can be found in the most recent article on the matter. The original article is below. [END UPDATE]

In an announcement on Saturday, Sony said most PlayStation Network services will be restored this week. However, nearly 13 days after service came down, it remains down, and Sony's investigation into the matter continues.

Sony will soon answer Congress' questions.

It's this ongoing investigation for which Sony has enlisted the help of a private information security agency, the FBI's cybercrimes unit, and The Department of Homeland Security. Now, the company has announced it will cooperate with the US Congress by answering a series of questions put to it by the US House of Representatives' Committee on Energy and Commerce's Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade.

The questions can be seen in the letter sent to Sony Corporation executive deputy president Kaz Hirai, which is online courtesy of the New York Times. Amongst the queries posed to the executive are:

--"When did you become aware of the illegal and unauthorized intrusion?"
--"How did you become aware of the breach?"
--"What information was obtained by the unauthorized individual(s) as a result of this breach, and how did you ascertain this information?"
--"How many PlayStation Network account holders provided credit card information to Sony Computer Entertainment?"
--"Please explain why you do not believe credit card information was obtained and why you cannot determine if the data was in fact taken."

Sony confirmed to GameSpot that company reps will not testify at the hearing tomorrow, but did say that they would provide answers to the government's questions before a Congress-imposed May 6 deadline.

"Sony is cooperating with the request for answers to the Committee’s questions, and in fact will be providing our responses in advance of the deadline," a Sony rep said. "We informed the committee that we could not appear as early as this Wednesday because of our ongoing intensive investigation and management of this criminal cyberattack."

@MotoMario, you just showed that you didn't even understood my original message, how could you then even judge it? I didn't buy three Xbox, I only bought one back in 2005, before I knew about PROD. But Microsoft owned up and has given me two free replacement models. My original message was about how companies deal with faults of their own. In what way is that condescending? I praised Microsoft for how they helped me resolve this issue (for me). Judging by the feedback I've got for this response as well as the feedback you received for your original comment, I don't think you're right about my original comment. Perhaps you should re-read it, I wasn't offending anyone I was just placing what you said into a broader perspective.

@ronnet okay man. I'm not that upset i just figured you'd laugh about how stupid this argument is. You're first response was condescending. But i don't even know you and i'm sure thats not the case. no need to get so excited about it. AND FYI if you bought a THIRD xbox that means you knew about the rings.

i hate,no wait i dont hate them i simply dislike the for what they did and hope that they will burn in an endless oblivion thats all

@MotoMario, I used arguments to make my point. You're response is that I'm a dickhead.... right. Also FYI, I was not aware of PROD when I bought my 360 (otherwise I would have never gotten it), and I have not put my trust into Xbox Live either, I'm still using Microsoft Point Cards for lack of a better alternative.

@jiraiyar94... yeah i know... i realize sony could have done better, but most just took this out of proportion, nothing more... it seems like people cant even try to understand this, they simply bash :S yeah sony was responsible in some part, but i believe they reacted well... they had some fault but not as much as people think, i dont understand a lot in terms of security techology or anything, but i dont find hard to believe that the mistakes sony made, are probably made by other companies.. so is not just about sony, its about a whole industry and they are making sony, the new ACTIVISION(in terms of being an evil company) About the comment... i didnt want to sound too sentimental or anything, but wednesday was a hard day at school, just that!! thanks for the corrections and the warning :)

Jiraiyair94
Jiraiyair94

@Claudiov1_0 Wo wo wo wooouuh, let's not get sentimental here my friend ;S we have to be objective on both sides (gamers and companies). Ok I understand that SONY is not God and makes mistakes and that some people can't get over it... but Sony IS responsible for what happened. If you are going to have all that information from a gamer you must handle it carefully. Things got out of their hands, and that´s understandable, but you saying that they don't have the fault at all is as extreme as what the other guy (which comment I couldn't find) probably posted. Not anything against you just stating a point (;

taino1128 Ohhhhh, okay XD All answering to congress could do is enlighten the rest of us--and it has now that I've read through GameSpots article on it. Can't see why anybody wouldn't want them to. And yeah, I remember hearing that service was going to come back on the 3rd, but that's come and gone...And there is always singleplayer! :D Although, I'm an avid MAG player, and that's online only. God damn Anonymous... >:(

@slvrraven9,yeah you are just one of those guys who likes to complain.... necessary info? yeah sony provided the necessary info, it isnt what you would like to hear, but they made us aware of the risks and potential consequences of this outage... arent they improving security? last time i checked, they were moving their servers to a new location and they improved it....oh wait you are one of those people who thinks that they should rebuild an entire network.. is that it.. because i dont understand how you can possibly think that they could have deal with this is in a more responsible way... About the goodies... what did you want.. a car, a new house?? they are rewarding us for something they are not responsible for... just for pacience... Besides, if you dont like sony products or the way sony reacted, and you lost your trust in the company, dont buy anythin from it truth is, that sony gave us awareness of the risks, is improving security, and will give us a relatively pleasant reward, for something they did not had any fault!! you can complain and wine how you want, but if you dont like it stay away from it, the last thing everyone needs is more people who simply just cant stop complaining. If i find your next comment worth of responding, i will, but dont count on it!

They still need to address "why you cannot determine if the data was in fact stolen.to me that was one of the biggest questions. They have still not said for SURE that no CC was taken(from PSN not the SOE servers), they just keep saying things like "not likely"

@GoingPostal13 I didn't say it was crystal freakin' clear did I? It's something, but not enough. I can still make all the accusations I damn well want though. OJ KILLED HIS WIFE!!!!

@goingpostal13 Anonymous is a part of a community on a larger scale. I don't believe that that group has anything to do with it still, but more like certain individuals of this community that associated with anonymous. Like they said, "rouge elements", it seems to me they are leaning towards something else. They wouldn't answer some questions because of "security reasons",they probably have a idea of where and or who, just a matter of time till we all find out and someone gets caught.

@tmacman yeah - they found a file labelled 'anonymous' - the name proves it!! That's weaker than my 90 year old gran's bladder. Seriously.

@ngboy Point well taken. But it wouldn't make sense to have all resources tied up into finding those that hacked one corporation. It's a good bet that part of the reason Sony has to come before Congress to answer questions is a hope to find any info that could be used in preventing a similar attack on government databases. I'm not saying that's the sole underlying reason. Also the hack occured on U.S. soil, if I'm not mistaken, in California. Correct me if I'm wrong.
