Sony targeting PlanetSide 2 'scumbag' cheaters

SOE president John Smedley says company is "aggressively" banning those found using hacks in new free-to-play shooter.

Sony is going to war with PlanetSide 2 hackers. In a series of tweets last night and this morning, Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley said the studio is "aggressively" seeking out and banning those found using hacks in the new free-to-play game.

"I want to make some very clear statements about hacking in PlanetSide 2," Smedley said. "We are aggressively banning people. As they develop hacks, we will break the hacks. We have time and great people. Trust that this is a top priority. Hackers will not win."

Smedley called out one specific gamer, saying each of his three accounts had been banned, but not before firing off some harsh words. "Goodbye you scumbag. Find a new hobby or get good at the game," he said.

PlanetSide 2 launched last month exclusively on PC. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Hax or not this game is totally sucky for beginners unless you're willing to pay or play a hell alot.  The gameplay is absolutely awful especially with the starting weapons and it takes forever to get enough points to buy another one. If you're going to do some kind of leveling system like this there needs to be some kind of separation for newbs to level up until they have the firepower and communication skills to actually compete.  PS2 is a failed opportunity for the sake of the pay to win model imo.  After playing good fps's with top notch controls, gameplay, and weapons, there's no way I could play PS2 long enough to make a difference.

Cheaters & hackers needs to burn in hell

cheaters and hackers are crap at most things in life that require talent, integrity, maturity, intelligence, and thats why they cheat. As a result, they are untalented, weak, immature, and stupid, because they cant even learn the rules of a simple game!

I love PLANETSIDE 2, I hope they obliterate all the hackers

The hacks undermine the business model of the game. If people don't buy station cash, the whole thing breaks down. Going after the these people protects the game's existence.

Thats hilarious. Go Sony

They're asking for it. You can't even call yourself a true gamer if you resort to cheating in multiplayer games.

i used to hack, in games like cs, but then i grew some balls and realized how retarded it was. it made me think about why i even play games, and what about them makes it fun. fucking insecure losers, have to put up the illusion that they are good at a game to be happy. what weak and pathetic individuals, wish they could just go all the way, pirate their games like real hackers and play on pirated servers with all the other hackers..

For single player games, yeah.  Cheating and hacking in an MMO is a lot different to putting in a code and skipping a single player level.  I wouldn't call someone cheating and having an insane advantage over normal players "part of the culture".  And it's certainly not enjoyable.

And any customer who hacks and cheats isn't exactly respecting that companies work.  Call them what they are - CHEATERS.  The harsher they're dealt with, the better IMO.

Way to go.

Thats a policy ... other companies ...guhu "blizzard" guhu guhu... have to copy for their games... guhu..diablo3 guhu ...bot festival ..games!

2 observations;

1, at the greatest point in video gaming history, cheats and backdoors to get past levels you could not do, were part of the culture and enjoyed.

2, anyone working in an industry that declares war on its customers, is unemployed. He just hasnt let reality catch up with him yet.

Hackers should be left alone. They don't have an unfair advantage.

Facebook's way of targetting hackers themselves, issuing legal attacks to the hacker directly after tracking them down works wonders, maybe they could do something like that, make it part of the terms of service and levying a fine on hackers after repeat offenses.

That's awesome. Now if only I could play this game... Need new computer. badly.

I actually really like this game, and I'm becoming pretty good at it. It isn't as "pay to win" as people say. I'm a free user, and, though it was really rough in the beginning (steep learning curve and high difficulty), I'm starting to hold my own. It just takes practice and if you put a little time in, you can get some upgrades that help also. That being said, though, this hacking thing is a real problem that has the potential to actually derail and kill the game in the long run. Extreme measures should be taken, but I fear they won't be.

PinchySkree

Doesn't really matter, the pay to win attittude is enough to keep this game from becoming interesting.

I played PS1 a fair amount and this game is a dissapointment. It could have been much more. I doubt he'll beat the cheaters either as he says. I noticed when I played that it seemed people were cheating left right and center.

Aimbots and ESP hacks are killing this game, Its bad enough there is such a pay to win aspect to this game in the first place, If you are a free player expect to be butchered. Its cruel as the experience of playing in such big groups is amazing, but I am not sure how much more frustration I can take before I give up

Go get em Sony. I really can't stand hackers. I love mods and stuff that don't effect the online product or mess with people trying to enjoy the retail version of the game. Cheating is just unacceptable. I can't stand people who exploit glitches. Sure say it's the devs fault there's a glitch, but it still takes a cheater to exploit it. Stay down losers! No one respects hackers! I wish more companies did the same as Sony. So many of my favorite games are ruined by hackers. It pisses me off so much. Watch tons of Sony haters come here and blame Sony for this when we all know you can never really silence the hacking community. They are even risking it with this statement. Going public like this will only draw the "scumbags" closer.

Hackers Exposed! The hackers won't like this and they will come to forums like this and hate on this game all day now. Why hackers cheat? Because they love the attention they get from other players. To get that attention they have to create the illusion of being extraordinary, usually by hacking the game and having a leg up on everyone else. Without this hacking their just another below average Joe.

warhawk-geeby
warhawk-geeby

I'm not even a PC gamer but hackers piss me off..

Have the guys seriously got nothing better to do?  Play a game for what it is.  If you're not skilled enough to be competitive without cheating then you're just a crap gamer.

Truth hurts and life's a bitch..  But you may as well find a new hobby.

tightwad34
tightwad34

Cheating has always seemed to take away the purpose out of doing anything(unless it's gambling, teh he). It's like my friends little brother who used to cheat while playing a football game, can't remember which one, it was a while ago when there were multiple football games out. He would win 90-0 every time and I wondered how he was still having fun. I was kind of a buzzkill for him when it came to that, but I was just trying to be as realistic as I could.

This game is doomed because of the hacks. I certainly don't play it anymore when people are sniping me with pistols. Someone using one of these hacks can wipe out 10+ people in matter of seconds. TOO many players are starting the use these hacks and articles like this one are encouraging MORE people to seek them out, people that didn't even know they existed in the first place.

It's free to play.. banning accounts does nothing because they can just create as many new accounts with fake details as they want. Eventually the guides will come with the hacks on how to make your real IP address undetectable, it's already extremely easy to do. With the hacks they can unlock everything again so quickly that it's just all fun and games to them.

Free To Play is this game's downfall and the only way to beat the hackers is to join them. So make your choice; start using the hacks or stop playing the game because the hacks are the only way you can compete on any kind of serious level.

vackillers

Where the hell was this sort of statement durring the betas? there were ppl on the leaderboards that had over 7000 kills with 0 deaths, and 2 deaths... it was clear 2 months ago there was some major hacks going on and almost nothing was said about it even on the official forums... This is exactly the same thing that happened to the battlefield franchise also... The developers on these games seriously need to get their damn act together of develop proper anti-cheat systems in place because christ knows how many games in the last 10 years, have had some sort of aim-bot? really? no developer in the last 10 years can break the code of this hack? REALLY?? back in the days of the original unreal tournament, the very first delta force game or the original edition of counter strike shooting through walls....

Its lazy, and hurts the playerbase BADLY!!! yes programers out there are fucking smart, but this stuff seriously has to stop.... its getting beyond redicilous when almost every single FPS game that gets released, deals with this kind of stuff... Most ppl just deal with it, and thats pretty much all you can do until a patch roles out that fixes the hacks untill the next iteration of the hacks then the process starts all over again, baning accounts simply doesn't work, developers such as CCP found this out the hard way, where hackers would just simply make another damn account and start all over again. The only real effective way to get rid of ppl hacking, is to band their IP and contact their domain and block them out that way... Of course you run the risk of perhaps blocking out other legit players from the same internet provider, but thus is why u report them directly using their IPs to pinpoint the individual user...

I'm glad their on the case about this, and i really hope they are able to fight the war with hackers, but going past history its a never ending battle untill you change the way you develop your games to incorporate proper anti-cheating measures...

I was just playing Blops 2 zombie mode online and discovered someone had hacked that online session. Impossible situations with what appears to be unlimited ammo. Hackers are a different breed of gamers. They get joy out of putting out the illusion that their actually a lot better then they really are. No skill required.

I hope so because it has become the new normal for cheaters to be the winners in some online games.

Yep and we all know how this ended for you last time Sony... I hope you guys at least payed for better security this time around.

Why doesn't Sony just have separate servers one for unranked fun(hacker friends goofing) and the other for ranked that has strictly enforced rules? Then people could hack the game like in the glory days(N64) with out harassing other players.

abcdefgabcdefgz
abcdefgabcdefgz

In a game like this you need this attitude towards the cheaters. It breaks the game pure and simple and will make many people quit if its allowed to continue. Things like punkbuster need to improve and get better so every company can just buy and use it to stop cheaters without needing a big team devoted to it.

Ree_ixx
Ree_ixx

Im sure that hacker isnt going to just create a new account or anything like that. It's a bit odd to agressivly pursue bans for hackers in a f2p game, sure break the hacks but bans seem like a waste of time and resources to me. It does make for some good PR though.

nurnberg
nurnberg

Developpers urgently need to create new programming methods that make hacking harder to do.  I am not a programmer but I think this is possible to prevent hacking better.  Right now, a game gets released and there are already hacks on the second day.  It is ridiculous.

Dradeeus
Dradeeus

Kudos for not only banning people, but for genuinely looking like a human being who cares about the game rather than a faceless corporation giving vague pseudo-aggression.

wizo59mt
wizo59mt

to deal with hackers i think the devs and networks on even consoles should have a kill switch routine that activates as soon as it is compromised and have a encrypted bullet go to thier  hacking device and disable it permanently, i know people who didnt pay there cable bill could have this bullet sent to there device and have it blacked out till programming is restored to it, i would start doing that with my technology to fight back if i could, ruin their hacking device for them trying to hack into your device and ruin yours, being the game or system.

wizo59mt
wizo59mt

AWESOME SMEDLEY, about time some one called them out directly like that, maybe Sony can data mine the hackers as well and have charges put up on there AZZs. im tired of hackers and their bullshyt, i really hope these people start getting round up and sent to jail for a time, people can goto jail for straling a candy bar, why let these people get away with digital theft. Get em Sony!!

Maybe this is Sony trying to hit back at the hackers after what happened to PSN last year, Good on them i hope Sony wins.

I honestly haven't seen that many hackers in this game... the biggest problem I see is that a massive portion of the game's user base doesn't know how to attack objectives, and instead just run around guns blazing or camping out an unimportant spot like they're playing CoD on a massive map with vehicles.

They're best off making a tutorial so that players actually know what to do.

this could really invite 'Anonymous' attacks once again, and by that time, more free game :D

Well, he certainly was... emphatic.

While I do think he should do everything in his power to stop hackers from doing whatever they are trying to do, provoking them doesn't seem like a good idea.

Now correct me if I'm wrong but, wasn't it the boastful claims that "nothing could invade the PSN" that caused the hackers to start that major PSN outtage in 2011?

Ahhh... things would be a lot easier without hackers around.
