With six months to go before the PlayStation 3 comes to the region, European gamers are still flocking to buy its predecessor. With this news, Sony finally has something to celebrate today. In its sixth year of release, the PS2 is now the most successful console in Europe, and has sold 7 million more units than the PlayStation had after the same time period.

''We are extremely proud of the continuing success of PlayStation 2," commented SCEE president and CEO David Reeves. ''In the last month or so sales of PlayStation 2 throughout Europe and PAL territories has exceeded 100,000 units per week, which is extremely pleasing and proves the format is as popular now as it ever was."
