Sony Says PlayStation 2 in December

According to a report from Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, Sony has made its intentions official.

Comments

Financial-service firm Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, of which Sony Corporation is a client, recently released a research profile on the company in regard to its PlayStation 2 plans. To quote from the statement, "The company limited its comments on the PlayStation 2 to the following: that the domestic launch would take place in December 1999, that the product would be released overseas in time for Christmas 2000 sales, and that the target for FY99 sales of the hardware is two-million units."

Morgan Stanley Dean Witter clearly indicates that Sony is planning to launch its next generation system in December in Japan. Later in the release, though, the financial service firm mentions that, "Regarding the projected domestic launch date, the current PlayStation debuted at the September game show in 1994 and was indeed launched the following December, but in the present case a March 2000 launch is more likely."

So while there's still no definite answer for when the system will release, if one is to listen to Sony it will happen in December. As we've previously reported, the Morgan Stanley Dean Witter article also specifies the Tokyo Game Show 99 (which takes place on September 15-17) as Sony's vehicle for revealing more specifics on the PlayStation 2.
