Sony says indie games are the "heartbeat" of gaming

Promoting creativity and new ideas "the most important thing in this industry", says Sony executive.

Sony VP of developer and publisher relations Adam Boyes has described indie games as "the heartbeat" of the game industry.

Speaking in a recent interview with CVG, Boyes explained that promoting creativity and new ideas was "the most important thing in this industry" to him.

Speaking on the level of involvement PlayStation has with the indie game community, Boyes said:

"...We're very involved, I think. We care very deeply about it. We live it, and breathe it, and bleed it... when we're with these people, these are our friends. These are people we respect, these are people we have dinners with and... I don't know, it's a lovefest."

He described the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita's current indie presence as "infinitely better" than that of the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable respectively.

Boyes spoke about the importance of transparency and honesty in fostering relationships with indie developers in a recent interview with GameSpot. Last week, Sony confirmed a list of indie games for the PlayStation 4.

Wow Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooomany xbots, lol not even funny...the hell they all come from?   Mad jelly cuz they've been living behind a paywall since the dawn of 360 and have been getting crap but good matchmaking....I guess?.....So I've been told.  Meanwhile hating on Sony people, cuz not only will they have AAA and AA games plus indies, but a constant giving of free games, and while the"free" is a bit techinical...its still something right?  I mean honestly whats wrong with free games?  Whats wrong with a shitload of Indies?

Frigging Xscrubs you forget how yall got them trying to hop back on?  With that shitty ID@Box that rapes poor indie guys of their pride?  Man the hate is strong in this Sony article.  Is it fear, I mean the xbone is not selling as much, so are you worried........you should be.

I am really liking these small games for the PS. I wish that they would make another Eufloria. Its a great time to be a gamer!

Not surprised console fans bash indies because they know so little about games if it doesnt come with heavy marketing. Look at the forest trailer 3 on youtube then speak. Indie game. With the good engines now being almost free we will see more great looking indie titles like that coming. Making the ps4 open for indie titles was incredibly wise by Sony and they have already gotten good titles because of it like outlast(indie) warthunder and more. Especially good move since sony is low on cash.

Wait I thought Sony was 4 the gamers? So now they say Indies are the backbone of the PS4? Nice bait and switch Sony, now that you realize you don't have enough money to put into developing exclusive AAA games. Meanwhile Microsoft is investing a billion dollars into AAA games and people still spout hate towards the Xbox One. E3 is going to open a lot of people's eyes.

VegasDawg
VegasDawg

Fact is Sony does not have the money to be investing millions into AAA games right now, so they will be leaning more and more on indies. bad news for gamers , I sure hope Sony gets out of this hole they are in all gamers lose if Sony does.

Indies? That's the reason for 1080p? There's the reason for the "most powerful hardware of the gen"? I prefer much more AAA exclusives running in 900p and 60 FPS than bunch of indies, sorry Sony, but a PC from 2000's runs indies, even Ouya runs, I don't pay $399 to play Infamous Second Son and... and... sh*t, that's it?

Sony, if you kiss Indie developer's asses any harder you're going to get a serious case of pink eye.

There are technically correct about indie games. There are technically more indie game in the world than there are AAA titles, and standard video game titles that aren't by indie devs, also. The indie games normally keep the attention of the average casual longer than any other type of game.

jts1891

So, Sony is becoming Nintendo since it can't afford to keep popping out AAA titles. Should've known something was up when their launch titles consisted of Killzone, Knack, and a bunch of Indies.

vladric

It's probably their excuse to bring more games onto the PS4 since they are running out of money to fund their triple A studios. Quality > Quantity.

A well done indie can draw me in the same as a big budget game, but I'm still not dropping $400 on hardware these games plainly don't need.  I can play Spelunky on PS3 and wait for Dragon Age Inquisition before I buy a PS4.

MaP_Hagmen
MaP_Hagmen

Indie game have a lot to offer and can be great fun, but I would not be a big gamer if it was all indie title. I did not buy a Playstation 4 for indie games that can be played on a Playstation 3 or lower. The real question is why did Sony make a machine so powerful if they believe indie is the backbone??

Be looking forward to E3 and what they plan for the playstation 4 really is.

jts1891
jts1891

...Who cares about Indies? If I buy a $400 console, I'd like to play a game that actually justifies the purchase rather than something that could've been achieved on a PS2. Unless Sony starts pumping out some decent AAA titles, I'll be heading to PC for this gen.

willjohnboy
willjohnboy

calm down people there will be plenty of AAA Sony exclusive titles at E3, their embrace of Indies is a smart business decision and will benefit them and the industry for years to come, it's not their fault Microsoft requires a blood sacrifice to put indie games on their systems, i remember a time when the Xbox 360 was indie central so any xbot who speaks out against them is a hypocrite, just like the PSbots was last gen. Luckily I'm a collector and enjoy all games (i have every platform since the early 1980's and a quite powerful gaming PC), i like correcting or responding to the fanbots they seem to switch off their brain when a company is mentioned that's not their favorite.

So many trolls and xbots on this article spouting the same insults and over exaggerating as usual well done gamespot, I'm surprised this is not an eddie makuch story this screams of his trolling ways

jato24

question! does this mean Sony is more focused on indies than Triple A's this gen? just makes me think this will have a teeter totter effect where we see more indies and less AAA games from Sony.  Cause if he's sayin indies are the heartbeat of gaming I translate that to the heartbeat of the ps4 which is what it sounds like he's trying to say ! just my opinion from what im hearing.  When you think about it most of their news is about indies coming and not much about triple AAA's in development.  but it's early and maybe they are waiting on e3 for triple A announcements.  but i'm definitely skeptical about Sony's direction this gen at this point. Whats the benefit in upgrading to more powerful hardware really if this is the case? I guess you'd have the power to store more indies on your hard drive!  hardly a selling point

StHapns247
StHapns247

It is also a no risk, high reward endeavor for platform holders. The only people assuming risk are the developers or those who donate money to back them, and those reaping rewards are the platform holders being able to say "we have such and such game on our console!" without having to fork over a dime.

The indie market is over saturated and will not be able to sustain itself for much longer. Major developers are "going indie" simply because they do not like their current publishing contact; they'll make a decent indie game (maybe) then use that as leverage with a publisher to strike a better deal.

Damn I hope not, for me indies are like mobile games I hate them, the onky thing they good for is grooming casuals into gamers

@feared4power How so?

Indie games bring you the largest return for the smallest investment, and...  many are great games at relatively low prices.

Now, if Sony was only indies, but it's not.  This is the first year of a new gen...

youre_a_sheep
youre_a_sheep

@vladric Why do people keep saying that when it plainly isn't true?  Sony lost over a billion dollars last fiscal year, which is about half Destiny's budget, the biggest budget for a game ever.  You have to have no concept of materiality to think they have too little money to fund games for a console that can't keep up with demand.  If a PS4 costs $350 to make, Sony has spent $2.5 billion in six months churning them out.  Anyone with even a fleeting understanding of economics or business can see they have no cash flow issues.

youre_a_sheep
youre_a_sheep

@W4rl0ck I love the Fatal Frame franchise, but the 4th installment was never released for hardware I own, so it's like it doesn't exist to me.  That's exactly what PC gaming is to those of us who don't do it.  Yes, most of these indies are PC ports, but they're still new to me.  It's certainly not like porting doesn't flow both ways.

opticstrike

@MaP_Hagmen  Every company in the world started out as a indie, and eventuelly grows bigger, but Indie games are independent, and they can design the games as themselves pleased, so eventuelly a lot of them will get bigger and produce bigger games. Ps4 supports them since they are a big part of the gaming industry.. No one have ever said just because they support indie, they will make less big major games. It's just bullshit from XB fans. you already got a high enough IQ but it wasn't well-used with that comment, and try to think Gamer before coming with fast conclusions... it's so human, and it's not a good quality either

cherublvl99

@jato24  No, they just want to include Indie as well, and in the best way possible, to support all Game-developers to rise. Every Game developers once was indie, but grew.

@youre_a_sheep   Ok, I'm going to teach you a math lesson since you seem to have some Sony fanBOY glasses on.

When you loose money, your not making money, so when your not making money you don't have money to invest, get it.

Acitvision has invested 500$ million into Destiny they say, which is stupid if true but I don't believe it, and that's not more than a billion.

Your either a kindergarten student or very delusional.

cherublvl99
cherublvl99

@youre_a_sheep  So then I ask you, why Sony is not focusing in the AAA exclusives like they did with PS1, PS2, PS3 and MS is doing with Xbox One? There need to be something wrong, there's no reason to hide the announcement of an exclusive, announcing exclusives will put PS4 and Xbox One (in terms of games) face-to-face, cause for now the situation of PS4 is 3 AAA exclusives, one is 54 ou 100, other is 73 out 100 and other is 80 out 100. Just to you see how Xbox One is going better in terms of exclusives, one multiplayer-only game about mechs has a higher score than all of PS4 AAA exclusives, 86 out 100 in Metacritic.

And then what I saw after this is that news? Sony is praising the indies again? Maybe Ouya is going to get more AAA Exclusive games than PS4, Sony likes indies, there is no problem in it, but when you analysis deep the situation of PS4 you see how big is the necessity of AAA exclusives and how bad is that love between Sony and Indies.

jts1891
jts1891

@youre_a_sheep The PS4 costs $381 to make and when overhead like shipping and such is taken into account, they are selling each console at a loss. In other words, they are bleeding money.

willjohnboy
willjohnboy

@rocky_denace @willjohnboy Dude Sony has 40 first party studios they will have plenty of AAA titles, yes Sony lost a lot of money massive amounts of money but by no means are they broke look at Nintendo they lost just as much as Sony but there still going strong wishful thinking on your part i think, Sony will be fine besides games companies only care about the gaming sector and that's were Sony is doing well in 7+million units in about 6 months and still in massive demand where as the Xbox one has sold less that 5 million, which still good but if i was the head of a games company that was looking for a company to do an exclusive game on a Console I'd pick the popular and most powerful one that may upset you but the truth normally hurts.

opticstrike
opticstrike

@cherublvl99 @youre_a_sheep  They can't do both?  I feel you are jumping into a conclusion without thinking? stop this jealousy, both consoles will do great for those who wants them

topparrish

@thebeachguy90 @cherublvl99@youre_a_sheep PS4 will be fine.  They have 7 million units out and have more games than the xbox1 (http://www.gamespot.com/forums/system-wars-314159282/ps4-has-more-games-than-xbox-one-about-twice-as-ma-31153969/?page=1).  MS fans should be worried about their own future on their console because Bill Gates had an article out today saying he wouldn't mind dumping the system which shook up the stock and with the second largest shareholder in the company saying such things developers will take notice.

Happy Trolling

thebeachguy90
thebeachguy90

@cherublvl99 @youre_a_sheep It's not like PS3 had much going on for it at the start either and look how it ended up demolishing 360 in exclusives.  A few months into the new consoles and people already crying that Sony will not deliver this gen and will be bankrupt.  Give me a break. People are already getting bored of TItanfall.  The shine wore off on people within a few weeks just as I predicted. Just goes to show you if you played a dudebro shooter you've played them all.

cherublvl99
cherublvl99

@jts1891 @youre_a_sheep  - Actually it coasts more than $399 to make, but then Sony said the PSN subsciption would cover up the coasts, but not make the perfect profit that they had with the PS3.

willjohnboy
willjohnboy

@jts1891 @willjohnboy@rocky_denace i know but i'm talking about companies that can only afford to do one version, like atlas with the latest blazblue and the next guilty gear the playstation section of Sony has money to spend it's just a matter of risk, Microsoft did that with titanfall EA just assumed the Xbox one would do better than Sony now that has been proven wrong at leat for now Sony looks the better option, there will be less third party exclusives which Sony will try to get on their side they seem to be determined to right their mistakes from last gen and this is the last one.

jts1891
jts1891

@willjohnboy @rocky_denaceProblem is, most companies aren't looking to do exclusives anymore and only do it if the money is good enough. Look at Titanfall. Microsoft paid them to make it 'exclusive', but chances are the sequel will come out on all consoles simply because they can make more money that way.
