Sony reprises Symphony of the Night

Konami's original PlayStation Castlevania game now downloadable for PS3, PSP through console's online store.

Short of a stake through the heart, you can't keep a good bloodsucker down, and Konami's Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is one of the best.

As such, it's no surprise that the game keeps coming back, with its latest incarnation being a downloadable original PlayStation game released on the PlayStation 3 this week. And just like the rest of the PlayStation Store offerings from the original Sony console, the game can be transferred to a PlayStation Portable.

However, unlike the rest of the original PlayStation offerings and their $5.99 asking prices, Symphony of the Night sports a $9.99 tag. While that puts Symphony of the Night above games on the service like Tekken 2 or Crash Bandicoot, the price is more in line with the recently released Xbox Live Arcade edition of the game, which sells for 800 Microsoft points ($10).

Other new additions to the PS3 online store include trailers for Gran Turismo 5, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, and Infamous. A "behind-the-scenes" look at Heavenly Sword, as well as a half-dozen feature-film trailers, including one for the upcoming Resident Evil: Extinction, have also been added.

It's funny how it comes up under Xbox Live Arcade, but not under PlayStation Network.

The PSone download is better than the port on dracula x chronicles for PSP, as the dialogue has been dubbed with new voice acting on the crappy psp version. Also, the color is too vibrant on dracula x chronicles. IF YOU WANT THIS ON YOUR PSP, download it from the playstation store, I was very dis-satisfied with the Dracula X chronicles version, although the other two games in the package are on point.

OMG! I love this game and haven't been able to find a copy since 1998! and i live in the UK (Wales) and its not available from the playstation store! neither is tekken 2 and all of the trailers mentioned! WHAT IS GOING ON IN UK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love this game. I have the original PS version, and the XBLA version. The XBLA version does look and sound better, of course, and don't forget achievements which gives you more of an incentive to play. But I can't stand the control pad on the 360 controller. I hate it!!! It makes casting spells like soul steal a terribly frustrating experience. I thought maybe it was my two worn out controllers, so I used my brothers brand new black controller. Same stupid control pad issue. I never remember any of these control problems on the PS version. None. I'd prefer the PS version for a more nostalgic feel of control, but the XBLA version ultimitely has more value...But I really think MS needs to do something about the 360 control pad... because it sucks really bad!!

Favorite game of all time, then GoldenEye and Super Mario 3. Now for the ps3 to arrive in the mail.... However i still have my hard copy, so why but it? They should have released the Sega Saturn Version with the extra rooms and stuff. Might have been worth it to me. But everyone else should get it fo sho.

Down'd it last last, works great. Wish there was independent sound controls for music and sound effects. Effects seem a bit loud. XD

oh but back to the topic, i love this game, i don't care what system its on it is dope and i would get it and i got, and whats better is being able to play it on the ps3, saving it and throwing it to my psp and playing it on the go, i love being able to go back and forth, now if we can get some new games that function like this it would be awesome

dang, i saw this game for £25 in computer exchange a few years back... I thought, £25 for a PS1 game? No deal! A week later, I read up on that game but by then, it was sold already... atleast now I got a chance to get it back:-D

Ha ha ha to the guy talking about PS3 running cooler than the 360.......It's only cause it's never worth keeping the thing on longer than 3-5mins.....lmao

I for one love this I just completed all the achievements on the 360 version they were fun and not overly hard. Just being able to dive back into SotN was the best experience. When I purchase one of the new PSP's I will also be getting the Castlevania game (FF:Tactics is a definite though). I dont own a PS3 and if I did I probably wouldn't DL it if I had in handheld form but I think having the choice is excellent. Brilliant move SONY! What does upset me is that Alucard has such a wide fanbase why won't Konami give him another game. :( PoR was the closest Alucard experience for me. Maybe it was just the sidescrolling RPG element which I find so intriguing.

A little pricey but for a game that still sells for $40 on Ebay even though it's years old, I'd say it's not such a bad deal.

I just read all the comments posted about this topic (sad, I kow, but it's slow at work this morning). Crikey, so many complaints from such an ungrateful bunch. So WHAT if you can soon buy Dracula X: Chronicles and unlock SoTN? Not everybody owns a PSP or wants to spend

Bug420
Bug420

Making SOTN available for download shouldn't hurt the sales for Dracula X Chronicles. And if Dracula X Chronicles hurts the sales of SOTN, what difference does it make? It's only available for download, it's not like Sony has a bunch of discs in stock that won't sell now. This move does not hurt Sony or Konami.

PixyMisao
PixyMisao

Is Sony they trying to sabotage themselves and their portable after singling out Dracula X Chronicles in their E3 PSP presentation? I guess they figure nobody wants the PS3 so they might as well stab themselves in the back again. Next thing you know Rondo will show up on all three systems for download and Konami is royally screwed. BTW lsnake... Star Ocean 1 & 2 are coming to the PSP.

Lets not fight about which is better. lets just enjoy one the greatest games ever!!!!!

Same game. Same price. Two different consoles, yet we still have CHILDREN who want to try and say one is better than the other. Pure ignorance, if you haven't played it yet... get it for whichever console you own. If you have played it and want to play it again, ten bucks isn't that bad. If you can't get ten bucks after paying 400-600 dollars for a console, maybe you shouldn't be gaming at all.

SOTN is an amazing game, I emplore anyone that never played it back in the day, or on 360 to that just so happens to own a PS3 to get hold of it immediately. If you're not blown away - by the sountrack at least - I'll be forced to eat my hat

JoeSmith34: it's so funy to read your comments about how Xbox360 version is better. Let's see, the sound... 5.1 is better than 2.0? Give me a break. The game was designed in 2.0, and however you split it into 5.0, it's not gonna work magic. Any sound receiver can split a 2.0 into a 5.1, and if you ask any sound tech guru, they will tell you that fake 5.1 isn't better than 2.0. As for 1080P, ps3 actually upscale any ps1 ps2 to 1080p, so what's the deal with xbox360 version again? Oh that's right, most poeple can't connect the xbox360 through DVI to a TV. In fact, a source material of 480i upgraded to 1080p doesn't make the picture better at all. PS3 version is portable, if you have a psp. So if you have a psp, you can now have the game on the go. Better than anything you throw at it.

senjutsu: Sorry if you think $10 is too much for an "old game". But consider that SoTN is one of the best PS1 games ever. AND you can play it on your PS3 and PSP. Then look on ebay and find you won't be able to find this game for cheaper than $10. Most prices are between 10 and 15. But there's still shipping of about 5 bucks. And if you think you'll get it cheaper at someplace like a gamestop or something? Yeah right... IF they even have the game. They're gonna get you for as much money as possible. This really is a great deal.

senjutsu
senjutsu

Cool, mine is scratched, I may as well pay this 10$, still, it's high priced for an old game like that. I'm pretty sure I can buy this used for less than 5$. Anyway, I'll maybe buy it if heavenly sword is not really good (I'd be supprised, lol, it's looking like a god of war, and I love those)

B-bad

it's a classic game it's no surprise Sony is pushing it as a download for t he ps3/psp. I'm waiting for the PSP version that's coming with castlevania DXC it's said to be the most reworked version of Sotn. As for which download version is better IT DOESN'T REALLY MATTER the game is great and the more people who get to play it the better!

Hello all, just checking back, this thread really has gotten all crazy hasn't? Randomness time: Ra-Devil, you are probably right. However the point of these games are to preserve close to exactly as possible to the original version of the game. I wish the Wii VC games didn't have slowdown like the original games. Or that they had new version like the Stats of players and better backgrounds in SMBS 2. (On GBA version). You are not "fixing" anything that is the way it was. I never played this before and was going to get it, so no I didn't know, and now I can't unknow that and figure it out myself so thank you for that... JoeSmith34: I am not refuting that your argument that the XBLA version has better sound quality, because I have never heard it, but just because something is in 5.1 does not mean it has better sound quality. You can stretch any junk out to 5.1 and any Microsoft sound engineer can call it surround sound but that doesn't mean its good. The original would have been in Redbook audio 16bit/44.1Hz, so the new version would have to be at least at that quality for the entirety of the whole XBLA version. Then you have to split the sounds and properly mix them, which surround sound mixing is very difficult! Plus you can add a sub and make 2.1 yourself anytime. Again, I am not saying you are wrong, just that doesn't make it automatically true. And the other guy that said nobody reads big posts, speak for yourself! Some of us actually have the spare 15 sec. to read something longer than a 3 sentence paragraph. Sorry, I forgot, nobody is reading this... (not everything is a "fanboy" rant either, just communication)... Stay in School!

JoeSmith34 basically hit the nail on the head. It was an incredible game in it's day, which I still own, but the XBLA version is just better. Not "OMG THIS IS AWESOME" better, just enough to make you really notice. I still wish they had fixed the Alucard Shield. That thing is rediculous. Everyone knows what I'm talking about, right? You know, kill Dracula in 5 seconds if you want.

The best version of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is the Xbox 360 version. The Graphics, Sound, Achievements, Gameplay, all make it the best. To answer your question, jocaju, it was only a rumor that the Xbox 360 Xbox Live Arcade version wasn't going to have sound as good as the original CD version. The reason that rumor started was because Xbox Live Arcade usually insists that games are released at a size of 50MB or less; that way they can be transferred on any memory card. But Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was the first Xbox Live Arcade to receive permission from Microsoft to go above that limit. In fact, Castelevania: Symphony of the Night is currently the largest Xbox Live Arcade game there is. In terms of sound, the Xbox Live Arcade version of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is actually BETTER than the original CD game on the original Playstation, because the original Playstation game was only in 2.0 sound format. The Xbox Live arcade version in the format of true 5.1 digital sound. I already have purchased the Xbox 360 version, which has graphics that are displayed in 1080p with the Xbox 360. So, there is no reason for me to even consider getting another version of the game. If you have both an Xbox 360 and a Playstation 3, I recommend the Xbox 360 version. But if you only have a Playstation 3, this is a good game to get.

Excalabat it there any difference between this and the disc, i mean i heard that went the xbox live got it the music quality went down to help save space. is that the same for this release also?javascript:submitPostAjax(); I don't think so, I've downloaded crash and looks equal or better then the PS1 version.

I own it on 360, and when Castlevania collection come out for the psp i'm buy that one also,BTW I keeping reading on this post so many people complain about the hardware problems of 360 compaired to the ps3, I dont know where u guys bought your 360's from but I've had mines for over 11 months It will be a year next month and it never over heated nor died out on me,it has frozen up on me only with a certan game,I'm no fan boy i used to own a ps3 but sold it ,I might pick one up again this november or early next year.

I agree, I was just wondering how both companies screwed up on their second systems( PS2 and x360). It just seem too coincidental to me. Anyway just an observation, I'm glad I do own both ( I can't find a Nintendo Wii anywhere...lol) both MS and Sony have upcoming titles I must have, I'll never go through gaming "drought" no matter what...lol

Demandred24
Demandred24

Theole ps3 has literaly zero recall as of now. I believe its at 1-2 percent. Where as the 360 has had issues. The fact of the matter is the 360 came out before it was ready. Ms was in such a hurry to release the console before the ps3 that it wasn't up to par. Ps3 had a delay, and if you actually own a ps3 like I do. You will see, that it runs extremely quiet and very cool.

TheoleDominion1
TheoleDominion1

Both Sony and MS has had hardware problems PS2 (disk error) x360 (three flash red lights of death). Both are their second hardware releases, while their first systems the PS1 and the original Xbox didn't have nearly as many problems. That's real "head scratcher", how can two companies do well on their first endeavor and screw up the second go 'round? Is it the "sophomore curse" or something?

If you've got a save file from the PS One version of this game, you can transfer it to your PS3 and continue from where you left off. How awesome is that? I get to start from 62% complete. Maybe I will take the time to get 200%...

oogieboogiemanj: "Hah! Why does it sound like you just like to bash the PS3? I also have all 3 systems. And all 3 of them have no problem getting a great connection. Well, all 3 of them once I get my 360 back from the repair center since it got the red light of death. But that's besides the point. My PS3 NEVER crashes. My PS3 ALWAYS works. My Wii does just fine as well. Never had a problem with it, except for the first day I had it, it got screwed up from the day one update they put out. But it wasn't that bad cause I live in Redmond so I just drove it to the main Nintendo repair center and exchanged it for a new one on the spot. Makes you wonder why Microsoft doesn't have their main repair center in the same place as their game studio headquarters? If you wanna talk about reliablity? PS3 hands down is the best out of the 3. And the Wii is practically tied with it. But there were some problems at launch, but nintendo took care of those few instances quickly and quietly. Microsoft on the other hand, well, it's gonna cost them over a billion dollars to fix their problems. So you just go ahead and keep shellin out money to them for their overpriced accesories. That's gonna help them to keep making systems that break. Agreed, Sony needs to get more great games up on the Playstation Network to make it a real contender for the Live service. I won't argue that one. Cause the Playstation Network is weak right now. But remember the first year 360 and live were out? It was pretty weak too. So let's just give the Playstation network a few more months, let's say, till after this holiday season and we'll see how weak it is."
