Sony PSP updated to 2.80

Latest downloadable revision includes animated, graphic RSS content, upgraded support for media playback; game demo released in Japan.

Sony released another firmware update to its PlayStation Portable today, upgrading the handheld's support for RSS and playback of multimedia.

The 2.80 update can be installed directly through the PSP using the System Update feature while connected to the Internet, although the Sony PSP's System Update page, where PSP owners can usually download the updates to a Memory Stick to install them, had not been updated as of press time.

The main features are support for animated and graphical content through RSS (really simple syndication) channels and an update to the LocationFree player, allowing hardware registration through wireless LAN access points. To simplify life a bit for the multimedia junkies, the PSP will now recognize media saved in music, picture, and video folders in the root directory, as well as AAC music files with the .3gp extension. Last but not least, a demo of the puzzle game Tama-Run has been added to the portable system's download page--but only in Japan.
