Sony points users to PS4 video on 'slow news day'

PlayStation maker directs Twitter followers to watch PlayStation 4 teaser video hours before Microsoft will reveal its next-gen platform.

Just hours before Microsoft will unveil its next-generation Xbox, Sony has directed its Twitter followers to watch the new PlayStation 4 teaser video because "it's a slow news day."

When Sony announced the PS4 in February, Microsoft's director of Xbox Live programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb took a shot at the company, saying, "Announce a console without actually showing a console? That's one approach."

Microsoft's next-generation reveal event begins at 10 a.m. PDT. GameSpot is in attendance at the presentation and will host a live stream of the event beginning at 9 a.m. EDT.

Xbox One No you Lost Big Time

Wait, did I get this right? The Xbox One uses a blu ray player? I just read that in an adjacent thread. Doesn't Sony own the patent on that tech? If so, doesn't MS need to pay Sony for every unit they make? Ouch! Or is it that the patent is not applicable anymore? Just curious. :)

I want a game console ....plain and simple.

Haha, I had never read that comment before: "Announce a console without actually showing a console? That's one approach."

MS really showed Sony on this one!  Hmm, announce a console without actually showing anything that people want, but instead tell them how it prevents used games, requires them to be online once per day, and not only watches them but monitors (and of course reports back) their heart rate?  That's one approach...

When your online console architecture is crap I couldn't give a crap about what games you potentially have. In addition to video games not being a priority, this is why the Xbox One's reveal was a fail and as of now the PS4's reveal was not. Sony is not making it a hassle for gamers to do what we've been doing. Being able to pop a game in and (sans the PS3's mandatory install) just play the damn game without worrying about whether I've done the obligatory online check-in once every 24 hrs so that the game that I PAID for works. And that fee to unlock a pre-owned game for a seperate profile? Just...no. Gamers in the same household can't even share games anymore without jumping through hoops.

Sony & MS must believe (and they have reason to) that we are all suckers waiting to be plucked.  I quit......no more new gen consoles for me.  I am not made of money.

MS press conference was a disaster.

The Xbox One is the real tv simulator. :(

People are so ridiculous. How was today's MS press conference a disaster? It's not E3 folks! Relax. They haven't shown their BIG guns yet. Think of it this way. Today they got a lot of that TV entertainment crap out of the way. Now at E3 they can focus more on Games. MS announced 15 exclusives, plus an exclusive deal to get COD DLC for a year. Games make or break a system. Don't ever forget that!

After today's catastrophe by Ms I think the Sony Playstation brand can declare it's self a winner .

I think that the battle of videogames is over cuz, the M$ has turned de xbox in a "entertainment hub" and Sony has a videogame....

It's barely even a games console anymore. It's an "entertainment hub". Because of course none of us have computers ... or TV's ... or smartphones.

No one's talking about the fact that they have to pay for Xbox Live again to play online???

It turned out to be slow news indeed... that must have been the worst reveal in gaming history.

No I agree but it's a damn disaster either way ! Why is trying to take on too many competitors with this catastrophe of a contraption , I personally think they should have made it simple but it seems they failed , Sony have kept it simple a games console and it as thought of the future with DDR5 unlike Xbox .

@Orionsangels Yeah, but Sony is actually coming off as the more consumer friendly company. Am I going to pay a few extra bucks to borrow or rent a game? no. Do I want always online, or even a once a day online check in? no. Do I care about COD DLC? no. I'm just going to go ahead and guess that all of the online requirements are going to cause a metric crap ton of issues as well. I think if I even bother with a console this time around (and I may not), it'll be PS4. I'd already be paying for live, I don't want to get jerked around by their used game fee bull shit as well.

@OrionsangelsRestrictive online DRM breaks a console, too.

They just threw away most everyone in the military, a large portion of the US, much of the foreign market, and anyone without stable at-home broadband for any reason. Not to mention the simple customer goodwill they lose and bad press they gain. This is a line-in-the-sand point which they have crossed.

Ask anyone whether they would rather have a console that restricts your usage to a narrow set of cases, or one that doesn't? All Sony has to do is say "yeah, we're not doing that," and Microsoft has handed them massive free PR and a solid selling point.

@Sam_021 Xbox live is a scam. For this reason, i think i'll jump to Sony or Nintendo's ship.

i'm actually indifferent. regardless of how little game-related content we all saw from either, both consoles showed off impressive hardware and features. people won't appreciate that, and still even go as far as to compare the two from a gaming perspective. they're not trying to be gaming consoles anymore. they're trying to be entertainment platforms. only time and market performance will tell if that's the right direction. but life goes on. the fanboys, however, are delusional.

  @nonfanboygamer1 @Orionsangels This is just the beginning of a new console, not the be all and end all. It's hilarious to me when people give a final verdict based on a press conference announcing a new system. When we have 5 to 6 years to go in it's life cycle.

What does the consoles case design have to do with anything?? It effects absolutely nothing.

I think we're now in an era where gamers are not easily impressed. Haven't you noticed a trend? 3DS launch was not received well. Now it's a hit. Why? Because it got good games. The same thing is gonna happen to the Wii U. It's already starting, they announced Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart for Wii U. That'll start getting the ball rolling. I see that trend continuing with PS4 and Xbox One. Slow beginning, but growing bigger as they start releasing good games.

@nonfanboygamer1  Hey, hey now.  All I'm saying is you don't have to be a console fetishist to appreciate aesthetically pleasing console shells like the Dreamcast one or technological marvels like the Sega CDX.  :p

Shadowdanc3r

@Scorpion1813 @Shadowdanc3r  Size for one.  How well will it fit in your current AV rig?  Two, will it stand vertically, horizontally, or both.  Three, it's nice to have something pretty to look at, humans can be visual and superficial creatures.  :p

Shadowdanc3r
Shadowdanc3r

@Scorpion1813 @Shadowdanc3r  I won't base my decision on design, but I won't say it doesn't matter.

I remember one time Nintendo showed off the N64 case, but it turned out it was being run by an SGI supercomputer or something hidden somewhere.

@Shadowdanc3r @Scorpion1813

In that case the new xbox must really have some crappy technology, because it looks like one of the first vhs players...

Scorpion1813
Scorpion1813

@Shadowdanc3r

But you don't need to look at the case to guess what the technology will be like, especially when they actually talked about what is under the hood - and that's the stuff that matters.

Also, if you are going to base your decision for buying a console on how it looks, then I have nothing to say to that. Same applies if you are planning on decorating your room based on the look of the console.
