Sony PlayStation Vita Wrap-Up

If you missed the details at E3 2011, get the full rundown on Sony's PlayStation Vita here.

What Is the PlayStation Vita?

The PlayStation Vita is Sony's next-generation portable gaming console. The new handheld will feature improved graphics and controls and a robust online connectivity. Under the hood, the Vita will be powered by an ARM Cortex-A9 CPU and a PowerVR SGX543MP4+ GPU, both sitting on the bleeding edge for the moment. It will also be the first gaming handheld to feature optional cellular 3G connectivity.

How Much Will It Cost?

A Wi-Fi-only version will cost $249, and a Wi-Fi/3G model will retail for $299 in the US. In the UK, the two versions will cost £229 and £279 respectively, while Eurozone pricing for the console will be €249 (Wi-Fi) and €299 (Wi-Fi/3G). In Japan, pricing will be ¥24,980 (Wi-Fi) and ¥29,980 (Wi-Fi/3G).

When Is It Coming?

The PlayStation Vita will be released during the 2011 holiday season. However, a recent leak might have revealed the release date to be November 4.

How Will Data Plans Work?

Sony announced that 3G service will be provided by AT&T in the United States. The company did not clarify whether data plans would be offered on a contractual or month-to-month basis. There were also no details on pricing and international 3G service.

What About the Games and Backward Compatibility?

Games specifically made for the Vita will come on small flash-based memory cards. There is no UMD slot on the Vita for older PSP games. However, the Vita will be able to play PSP games made available through the PlayStation Store.

What Kinds of Controls Does It Have?

Among its conventional controls, the Vita will feature two analog sticks, a D pad, two shoulder buttons, action buttons (triangle, circle, cross, and square), and the usual array of system-related buttons (power, volume, start, select, and PS button).

Sony will also add motion controls to the Vita that come in the form of its Sixaxis motion-sensing system (three-axis gyroscope, three-axis accelerometer) and a three-axis electronic compass.

For the touchy-feely, the Vita will feature a multitouch-capacitive touch screen and a multitouch rear touchpad.

What About the Screen and Cameras?

The Vita will have a capacitive multitouch 5-inch (16:9) OLED screen that runs at a resolution of 960x544. By comparison, the Sony PSP featured a 4.3-inch (16:9) screen with a 480x272 resolution. This represents a fourfold resolution increase and almost twice as many pixels per inch (220 PPI versus 128 PPI).

The front and rear cameras on the Vita will run at a maximum resolution of 640x480. They will be able to record at 120fps at 320x240 and 60fps at 640x480.

How Long Will the Battery Last?

Sony made no statements regarding battery life.

What Will Online Access and the User Interface Be Like?

The Vita will allow users to play a game on the Vita and pick up right where they left off on the PlayStation 3. While demonstrating a game called Ruin at E3 2011, the presenters started a gaming session on the Vita and then picked up in the exact same spot on the PlayStation 3 moments later. The PlayStation Network's cloud save abilities help make this feature a reality.

PlayStation 3 user-generated content will be usable on the Vita. Sony demonstrated the feature at E3 2011 with ModNation Racers, where demonstrators imported tracks. An upcoming Vita version of Little Big Planet also promises to let users access levels made for the PlayStation 3.

The Vita will sport a brand-new user interface that replaces the old XMB. Welcome Park, a tutorial program, will help users figure out and experience all the new software that comes on the Vita. Elsewhere, new networking features called LiveArea and Near will let Vita users download games, view an "activity" log with accomplishments from others playing the same game, and let them find out what nearby friends are playing or what they were playing recently. Additionally, Near will also let users gift virtual game items. Another feature called Party will let users chat via voice and text during games and outside of them.

after reading the games lineup im a little dissapointed. I really want uncharted golden abyss but ill have uncharted 3 which will probably be better. metal gear solid is going to be good but i dont know when its going to come out and if its M im screwed cause of my strict parents. Lastly the one game that would be the selling point for me isnt there and thats monster hunter freedom 3. one game wont sell it for me and i can play all those other games (previous versions) on my ps3. ill wait on it until the 3 games i want come out and settle for my 3ds for now which has games i want coming out soon.

i would like to the PSv use its self as a PS3 controller with added gameplay features like item, map, manage system like the wiiU, i feel if that worked, this will really wipe out the wiiU as this is a portable console unlike the wiiU. if fact i would LOVE to see this happen lol

This looks pretty cool but am i the only one who thinks £279 is a little steep for a handheld thats dearer than all three consoles.

questions: i have some psp games(ISO) in my computer. can i just put those games in a vita and play it or must i redownload it from ps network? does it have internal memory storage and what is the average size of 1 PSV game? does it have custom firmwares? if it don't, when is it estimated 2 have?

@supernaught360 yeah whatever you say... youre very funny! just get some sleep and move on. hahahaha! youre just dragging everyone here into your non-sense abysmal thoughts. youre the one who look more psychotic and obsessive. no need to comment that long its getting nowhere. you need someone to talk to or some sort of medication.? pls dont scare us like that again. Lol

supernaught360
supernaught360

@espernay "Think" I know better than Sony? Well, for starters, I have a firewall on my networking equipment. How am I doing so far? By the way, do you ever actually try and refute anything or just name call? Let's try one: The PS2 is obsolete. It doesn't run on modern TV's, and it's a generation behind current consoles, and about to be 2 generations behind. Lastly, those PS2's won't last forever. And once it's gone, there's no way to play all those great titles unless Sony offers BC with future consoles - like the Vita, where they're missing an opportunity to offer downloadable PS2 games. I don't think anyone would be disgusted to be able to download the PS2 God Of War games, Resident Evil 4, yadda and so on - except yourself for some odd reason. With an HDMI or some type of video out (And by the way, the PSP supported this feature), the Vita is more than capable of being plugged into a TV, and at HD resolutions with ZERO UPSCALING (for Vita exclusive games) provided they're programmed in HD. You have a rather psychotic view towards more features being in a component. And stop being obsessive - you're becoming kind of creepy.

I have a 3DS and I have to say that I'm mildly disappointed in it. First, the 3D is only on new 39.99 games. I thought that cheaper 3d games would be on the eStore but that's not the case. Second, they removed the best camera lens (Distortion, Color lens, Frame and Mirror) for keyhole and Dream. both worthless. And I can't play flipnote studio. I'm hoping that these problems will be resolved later. As for the Vita. Let me say that many of you are wrong. These games aren't ports. Ports are the exact game just bought over to another system. Like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. Littlebig Planet Vita, Motoracers Vita and Uncharted Golden Abyss aren't P O R T S!!! They have all new stories, levels and new gameplay. @Sly_Boogy07 called the Vita a gimmick?! Sly if going back to 2d is empty to you then your going to have to shell out cash to get the 3d experience. Besides if you consider all of the Vita games Ports then what is Super Street fighter, Pilotwing, Zelda, Ridge Racer and Madden? What made the PSP work for me was the games but also the extra features. Movies, Internet Radio, Comics, and something 3DS still hasn't give us. DEMOS! video clips are nice but let me play a little of the game to truly make a decision. The Vita has a built in camera which makes LBP Vita even more fun cause now I can go outside and capture stickers for my games. Plus the camera can be used to capture video not just stills. Another thing I'm waiting for the 3DS to do.

@supernaught360 owned me? haha yeah right i'm not the one who thinks movie streaming and game streaming are identical, you do realise the vita has to process the game, display it and then stream it all in real time at 720p to a TV all at once while someone interacts with it??? ... Not... going... to.... happen... Get over it. Google the term "Prerendered" and you get: "Pre-rendering is the process in which video footage is not rendered in real-time by the hardware that is outputing or playing back the video." - There is a MASSIVE difference to simply streaming a movie(pre-rendered) compared to streaming a game which you have to interact with in real time on a handheld... Is this so hard to understand? Owned!

Gothic_symphony
Gothic_symphony

WOW.. I am definetly getting this :) In a year or so...

supernaught360
supernaught360

@JohnF111 "To suit me" lol - yeah because I'm sure NOBODY would dig the idea of not having to have a PS3 to play Vita games on their TV's. Listen buddy: you can stop anytime with the "upscaling" and "native res" junk - I already owned you on that. This is 2011, and it'll be practically (if not literally) 2012 when this machine drops. Tablets, even smartphones are fully capable of running streaming HD content, and right now they're all using 1ghz processors (the newer ones are going to be even faster, with dual-core chips and up to 2 ghz). The only difference between a streaming HD video and a game, is the game has a control interface, and generally higher fps (most movies run between 24 - 30 fps, as do most games) if it's at 60fps. So please: don't act lie it's some magic tech Sony would have to add to make this possible, okay? There already there on smartphones, which is a competitor of the Vita btw. But Noooo... John says "Spend another 300$$$ on a PS3 to plug it into", LOL. Sorry bro, but with this thing's processing power, that's totally unnecessary. The LEAST they could do is enable it to play and stream PS2 games through a video out - the PS2 consoles aren't going to be around forever, buddy. The Vita is a viable replacement home for all those great titles.

JohnF111
JohnF111

@supernaught360 Yeah sure have the Vita render games at 720p and then display it on a TV or you could just use a PS3 like any sane person would rather do instead. Whats the point in the Vita having to process it's games at a higher resolution when barely anyone is going to hook it up to a TV more than once a week. Oh and i'm pretty sure games are rendered at one resolution and upscaled so i don't think the Vita could natively alter the output resolution to suite the screen it's displaying on without having to either upscale the game, or run a completely different version of the game which has been rendered at 720p to suite you.

supernaught360
supernaught360

@espernay Right, right. Because being able to play downloadable PS2 games on the Vita would totally suck. Read: the system is capable of both. You can't be that ignorant. And that "fanboy" crap can sink anytime now. You're just saying it because it makes you feel better about being name-calling 12 year old - but listen: I have a PSP and dozens of games, I HAD a PS3, as well as a PS2 like everyone else. If you think being able to download PS2 games onto the Vita isn't a worthy feature that I'm sure it's more than capable of, I'm betting you're in the minority. Because having access to 100's of PS2 titles at launch (when original titles are scant) is just a TERRIBLE idea right? Get a brain.

supernaught360
supernaught360

@JohnF111 Read carefully: you said "I'd rather not have a 544p image upscaled when my PS3 can play the same game much better." I answered, they don't NEED to have it upscaled if it's programmed in 1080p/i or even 720p to begin with. The screen res has nothing to do with what res the game is programmed. If the game is programmed to HD standards, why the hell would it need to be upscaled, lol??? Are you saying the Vita doesn't have the processing to play HD games???

I wonder what MGS game will be this time on PSV. I hope remake of metal gear 1 & 2 (^^)

espernay

@supernaught360. i will post the same comments even if i do so id rather not waste my time. porting PS2 games rather than PS3 games which the Vita is more capable of is a really bad idea. and again tell that to microsoft you fanboy.. Lol

johnsom9
johnsom9

It's an amazing thing to run ps3 games with something you can hold in your hands.

JohnF111
JohnF111

@supernaught360 780p? What is this? A new standard of HD that no one else except you knows about? You think a 1080p movie requires the same power to display as a game? Wow... and you say i need to read up on tech lol thats almost sig worthy.

ksbwings
ksbwings

the Graphic seems ok. I hope that mini HD can connect with this New PSP

alireza125
alireza125

its a little stronger than ps3 i think. it can performs many games strongly. this the best console.

supernaught360
supernaught360

@JohnF111 Well, how about this John: it's stupid to have to own a PS3 to achiebe this function, and with the graphics capabilities, upscaling wouldn't be necessary. Just make the games 780p since it has the horsepower I have 1080p movies on my Samsung Fascinate for crying out loud, and can stream them through my router to my TV. You should read up on modern tech, lol.

supernaught360
supernaught360

@espernay So to be straight: you think the concept of having the Vita be a replacement for the PS2 console is a BAD idea? I think you need to re-read my comment: like, 500 more times, MAYBE it'll sink in.

espernay
espernay

@supernaught360 tell that to microsoft... PS Vita is a portable tech monster! plugging in on tv will make it's portability, the touchscreen, the 3 axis gyroscope and accelerometer, 3G and interaction to reality completely useless. Its more of a outdoor device. How can you experience its maximum capabilities if you are constrained by a hdmi cable.

Poncho_Hachacha
Poncho_Hachacha

@JohnF111 supernaught360, putting his name aside, actually has a fair gripe about tv connectivity. But not having a feature that was in the previous system and one that I'm almost 100% positive will be added in later is disappointing. I'm willing to bet around the time the next Sony console comes out, they'll have a Vita redesign ready with tv connectivity included and hype it as a step forward when really it's exclusion is a step backward. It's not a big enough deal to stop me from buying one when it comes out, but it could be for some.

GameNow79
GameNow79

Sounds sweet. However, I really would have thought that it would have gotten a 720p screen given the graphics capabilities of the HD graphics engine. HDMI should have been a given, though. Nonetheless, sounds like a solid beast, and these features were most likely left out to keep it more affordable ... if one truly can call a $300 hand-held gaming system an affordable device in this economy.

Why they reduce the price for the UK and not for the Eurozone!!! I think, someone must teach them that: 1$ = 0.78 Euros and 1$ = 0.61 Pounds Thieftation portable

omg was it necessary to include sixaxis motion controls?? i rather they took that out along with the touch pad at the back and include L2 and R2 buttons instead... sure its cool to have them all in one hand but as a portable device i doubt anyone is going to swing their expensive machine around.. i mean does anyone even use sixaxis for their ps3?
