Sony optimistic about 15 million-unit PS3 sales target

SCEA CEO Kaz Hirai tells Reuters that sales of the console were "better than expected" as of end of August.

by

Reuters reports today that Sony feels it is sitting pretty when it comes to its annual PlayStation 3 sales targets. Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai told the news service at the Tokyo Game Show that not only have sales PS3 projections been met for the year to date, but they have been slightly exceeded.

Sony expects to sell at least 15 million PS3s this year.

"As of the end of August, sales look a bit better than we expected," said Hirai. Some analysts are also anticipating a holiday price cut for the $300 console, which saw its internal hard drive upgraded to 160GB last month. A 320GB version of the console will also be available as part of a $400 PlayStation Move bundle starting this weekend.

Sony's goal of selling 15 million PS3s during the 12 months ending March 31, 2011, was first revealed when it reported a reduced company-wide annual loss of $440 million in May. For the previous year, the goal was 13 million--a target Sony looked like it would miss until the introduction of the $300 PS3 slim in late August 2009. The cheaper, newer console boosted sales of the platform, which had a range of new exclusives and special editions shown off at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June.

To date, the PlayStation 3 has sold over 38 million units worldwide, with its portable cousin the PSP selling over 62 million units. By comparison, Microsoft earlier this year stated that the Xbox 360 had sold 40 million globally, while Nintendo has sold nearly 132 million DSs and 74 million Wiis. Of those, some 30 million Wii consoles were sold in the US alone.

@FanFicGuru You make some valid points :) BTW, I'm writing this on my SONY VAIO - IMO a badge is a badge and my VAIO badge is a nice one ;). Oh, also, I'd buy a 250GB PS3 for £200 (aprox $300) if it was sold at that price in UK. The UK PS3 250GB price is currently £285 (appox $400 - gulp!)

@FanFicGuru You make some valid points :) But, as they say, You don't get anything for free these days (especially when it comes to video gaming!) - im sure PSN will still make money from its download service to cover its losses like software sales help cover the losses on original fat PS3. Regards XBL, IMO the 'current' price of Gold online service is really minimal for the quality of service provided - but not looking forward to the proposed price increases - my pockets will have to take the hit though. Don't get me wrong, I don't like paying for anything that should be free and it would be nice if I got the same quality of service as XBL for gratis - but that just isn't going to happen - not for 'free' ;)

I cant stand anymore of the comments from blind sony Fanboys on this page saying its from sony so it has to be better then the Nintendo Wii the sony representatives even said so. Remember the Sixaxis controller that sony claimed was new even though third party companies made similar controllers for the PS one almost a decade ago. I doubt the majority of gamers saw it as anything but a gimmick because one game had to have DLC put out just to let gamers play with the thumb stick instead of the motion controls. Remember sonys eyetoy that supposedly sold about ten-million units. The last time I saw an eyetoy in a store was at a Circuit City in 2008 and they had piles in a bargain bin for about ten dollars. No one at E3 this year ran past another companies booths to play the move its not like the Wii at E3 2006. If sonys history with motion controls tells us anything it would be that if its sony and its motion controls its probably bad.

It might be good priced or not but one thing is true, that is not everyone over here spend there money only in videogames. I rather buy other usaefull things before.

@mellow09 Xbox only outsells PS3 because the same Xbox users keep buying their Xbox's after the old one dies. The average Xbox user is on their 2nd-3rd Xbox, while people to this day still are using the original PS3s.

mellow09

@Fanficguru The $200 Xbox is different only in drive space. That's all. It has problems because that 4gb is apparently 'flash drive memory' and many of it's features require a hard drive--even though the 4gb is enough. It has nothing to do with it being a 'cheaper' product. And apparently MS is doing something to fix the hard drive required problems. Secondly, I said Sony would need to drop $100 to have a sales surge, a response to you saying they were going to. I didn't say they'd need to do that to compete.

FanFicGuru
FanFicGuru

@mellow09: My main problem with the $200 Xbox, and the reason why I called it a "joke" is because it seems to me at the end of the day Microsoft just put out a cheaper system not because they were honestly concerned about producing an "affordable" product, but simply a "cheaper" product. It's not just about Halo: Reach. There have been a number of problems with the cheaper versions of the 360 ranging from its compatibility with Xbox Live to disc read errors not to mention its dramatic storage decrease from the $300 models. If Microsoft put out a $200 system that was well-made and was honestly trying to cater to a wider economic demographic, I would say more power to them. However, since more and more evidence seems to be coming out that the $200 Xbox is just Microsoft's way of trying to push a cheap product onto as many gamers as possible, I can't really respect them for that. I will re-state this again, in case people are misunderstanding me. The Xbox 360 and PS3 are great competition for one another, if you compare one $300 system to the other. Now that PS3's price has come down to a more acceptable level, I think that explains the uptick in PS3 sales. But don't try to tell me that the PS3 has to go down to $200 to compete. It will do just fine at $300.

how silly it is that people compare the number of PS3 and Wii sold and that wii has sold more than PS3............It's as stupid as saying that nowdays HYUNDAI and KIA companies sell more cars than FERRARI and ROLLS ROYES !!!! There is a great difference between the technologically superb PS3 and the casual family friendly wii (I'm not saying that wii is bad) but the these 2 are different...

in a way the ps3 was never overpriced... built in wifi $100 bluray player $200+ it also came with a wireless controller as opposed to a wired control $50 no charge for the online play $50 a year the xbox came with none of those things, they were all sold seperately. in a way the ps3 was dumb for puting all the extra features in because the every other console was much cheaper but you know...life goes on. thats a total of $400+ of content you would have to pay to make you xbox equil to a ps3 in content

@blazey09 OMG u r a noob. If u click on the link where it says" Xbox 360 had sold 40 million globally", the article dates April 22. And this article states that "To date, Sony sold 38 million PS3s worldwide." And I believe 360 sold a few million since April 22, especially with the release of 360 Slim. So blazey09, you've just proven to me what a dumb@ss you are!!! Thanks.

mellow09

@fanficguru Exactly why is the $200 360 a joke? It has wireless, which you don't seem to know. It has the ability to use usb's to save or external hd's. Yes the 4gb seem to have a problem with Reach, but it still sells systems. And that's the fact that you seem to ignore, I don't know why. 360's been outselling the ps3 and will again in September. It's nothing to do with fanboysism, all to do with reality. Ignore it or accept it.

Sony isn't fixing the YLOD for free, they are charging you a ridiculous amount for their mistake. The consumer should not have to pay for it. It's also their attitude which made it worse. What was it, less than one percent? Please. I think the failure is at 20-30 percent now. It's not just Sony, it's the blind fanboys at work here. Don't even think about bringing the isssue to PS forums, the SDF will be there just to start trouble. SO instead of helping a fellow PS3 owner with the problem, they are not making it worse and trying drive them off. They sat at the top of the mountain for 10 long years, and now they're having a hard time losing with dignity. Instead of accepting that the PS3 was overpriced and its software library( at the time)not worth the extra cash, they accuse the world of conspiring against them. According to them, every last person that reviews video games is either an idiot or bought-off by Microsoft. If only they could look at themselves with the same critical eye.

While the internal clock error wasn't that big of a deal, it was definitely a smack in the face to all of the fanboys bragging about how their system never failed. As a 360 owner, i have no doubt in my mind that a lot of MS's sale are people that bought multiple systems before the problem was admitted. In reality, the sales are probably the same. A lot of stores started taking back systems after their own employees started to show up in the customer service line. BTW, i was one of the people that waited overnight to buy a Wii on day one, in the line of 42, there were only 8 kids or parents, the rest were young adults that wanted to play the new Zelda.

@digi-demon: Oh hi. The 250 GB model costs $300 and they just now put the wireless adapter in. So they just did what PS3 did from the start. Okay. You got me there. As for Xbox live kicking PSN's @ss...that's all a matter of opinion. Enjoy your XBL all you want, but I sleep a lot better knowing I haven't paid nearly $300 since the time I purchased my PS3 just to play against other players online. At the end of the day, I'm playing against other people in Blazblue Continuum shift at the same level as you, there's nothing better or worse about XBL compared to PSN except for one thing: it's free for me, not for you. So take that how you will. I agree that the $300 models of Xbox 360 and PS3 definitely have pros and cons and make for a good competition. Again, I just have a hard time swallowing the pill that the PS3 would have to drop to $200 to start outselling the 360, because i just don't think they need to.

@digi-demon 1 day. The interal clock error lasted one day. It was worldwide granted but nothing on the mass failure of most consoles launched in 2005? Hell my bloody xbox expired I bought that Q4 2007 got another in may this year. At least my PS3 has lasted since launch. :P

@FanFicGuru Please check your facts - the X360 Slim 250GB is with wireless adaptor built in - doh! and BTW, as for reliability track records, what was all that about internal clock errors a while back on the PS3 causing games not to work and unable to access the internet? - ever heard something about 'glass houses' etc. Oh, also 'so you get what you pay for' - so true, thats why XboxLive multiplayer is still kicking PSN's ass :)

FanFicGuru
FanFicGuru

@Mellow09: The $200 Xbox is a joke. Halo: Reach for example isn't working well with these cheaper versions of the Xbox, and at the end of the day you get what you pay for. Not to mention none of the 360's have an internal wireless adapter (so if you want to buy one it costs 50-100 bucks), and again it comes back to Xbox live costing nearly 60 dollars a year. Comparing one $300 system to another, there's more pros and cons, but don't try and tell me that the PS3 will have to drop its price ANOTHER $100 to outsell the Xbox, because it won't, and frankly it doesn't have to.

The question is what game exclusives will pull people to the 360 now that Bungie will be making no future halo games, i doubt Gears of War will............

RickyRevolver

I own both consoles luckily, and I have to say... I've gotten 2 RRoD from xbox, and 0 YLoD from the PS3 and I have own the PS3 for 4years. Point is...the YLoD is a real Rear case Scenario. people that are dumb enough to smash their ps3 when they loose a game of mw2 or people who play for 3days nonstop WILL get the YLoD eventually Eventually

OmenIWF
OmenIWF

The problem with these sales figures is this: WII sales are not really for gamers but for younger children and familty to play "safe" family games, and, by-and-large, I would assume that real hardcore gamers and even casual gamers, either own a PS3, X-Box 360, or, for those lucky enough to afford it, both. In addition as someone stated these figures account for sales but fail to account for trade-ins. With both the RROD and YLOD on the 360 and PS3 (respectively) being fixed for free (if within warrenty still for PS3 I believe), there are (I would imagine) not that many units being sold as replacements, maybe at most only 5% of the overall market sales while I would imagine most people who own a WII would sooner or later trade up to one of the other two consoles.

RickyRevolver
RickyRevolver

one of the reasons why sony is catching up to the 360 is because of that xbox exclusive game that sold more copies than the Halo Reach... The RRoD

mellow09

@FanFicGuru Well, the 360 has been consistently outselling the ps3 (by quite a bit, and contrary to what you think), and this month saw a new Halo being released, so it should sell a good amount more this month too. Around November, December, and January, maybe October, I expect the ps3 to outsell the 360, because that is the trend. But I certainly don't think, as you do, that the ps3 is going to have a massive surge. They'd have to drop $100, and even then it might not happen because 360 already has a console at $200.

@gpasap Bungie can't bring Halo to the PS3, no matter how much they wanted to. And I wouldn't want them to. If I wanted to play a Halo / Fable / Forza game, I'd have bought a Xbox, on the other hand, if my Halo loving friend wanted to play Killzone / Valkyria Chronicles / Gran Turismo, he'd have bought a PS3. Good on Sony, more money they earn means more they can offer the users and the longer we can enjoy free online gaming indefinitely. *Salutes the great Japanese console crunching machine*

Metal Gear Rising on the PS3 will crush the 360 version in every aspect of the game. IMO... Sony has the xbox by the nuts...MG on an xbox shows me that microsoft can't survive without playstation exclusives....so maybe this might mean....Bungie would actually consider bringing Halo to the PS3...because we all know, any xbox360 exclusive would flourish easily on the ps3......who agrees with me?....snake puts master chief to sleep.

I have a PS3 (playing), a Wii(picking up dust) and recently bought an Elite(unopened-waiting for GoW 2 to drop below $20 and play GoW 1 and 2). So any comment on my behalf... well I just play what I prefer the most... (PS3) But on the facts! Everyone, pls do not over see the following facts: The PS3 and the XB360 ARE THE only two next gen consoles out there. The PS3 is almost 2million units shy of the XB360. The PS3 was released almost one year after the XB360. The PS3 price point was higher than the XB360 for almost three years but the failure rate was more than 50% lower. The PS3 is catching up and at this point in time is over performing on the 360. Everything else... is just speculation. The Wii aside from this comparison, because I BET there are more than 40 million Wiis sitting on home entertainment shelves out there.

i think it is going to be kinda hard for them to hit that number as the console is barely selling 10 million on average for a year .

@kavadias1981 for a console that was hated by biased Microsoft xbot halo fanboy infested websites and was more expensive its doing better than expected and better than being written off like Microsoft can write off billions on planned obsolesence xbox1 and RRoD fiascos to buying off devs who made famous franchises on Playstation to disrupt PS3 sales. MS is rather desperate, overworking Bungie into only making one game, then selling Halo annually for four years straight then sandwiching the smaller console with Reach, so don't worry MS is going to do well because everyone knows xbox 360 owners are so paranoid they buy multiple consoles and will buy the new Small x360 to prevent suffering from RRoD.

@mellow09: You really think the gap is going to INCREASE? PS3 is catching up to XBOX 360, that's all. 360 had a year head start and PS3 hit the market with an unpalatable price-point, but now that it's becoming more reasonably priced you can bet PS3 sales are going to start shooting through the roof. Especially with the price increase of Xbox Live vs. PS3's free and ever-improving PSN. Both Move and Kinect seem gimmicky to me, and i don't really see either of them making a profound impact on the sale of their respective consoles, but I guess we'll have to see what happens. In any case, congrats Sony! Keep up the good work!

Mellow09 stop using VGChartz as that isn't reliable. The only reliable source are what the companies report and that is XBOX 360 41.7M and PS3 at 38.1 which is a 3.6 million gap. I don't think Sony has actually shipped less units now than they did at the end of June. VGchartz and even NPD are just estimates. The only reliable numbers are from the companies themselves since they have to report the correct numbers since they are both publically owned and would get into legal trouble if they didn't.
