Sony Next Generation Portable Wrap-Up

Check out GameSpot's complete coverage of Sony's powerful new handheld device with videos, photos, hardware specs, software titles, and more.

by

After months of rumors and leaks, Sony has finally taken the wraps off one of the worst-kept secrets in the industry--a successor to the PSP that is currently codenamed Next Generation Portable. GameSpot was on hand at the portable's unveiling in Tokyo last night and covered the handheld's debut in depth.

The Hardware

On the outside, the device looks similar to the original PSP, but it has some key differences. The analog nub has been replaced with more pronounced analog sticks--two of them in fact--opening opportunities for more familiar control schemes. There are also two cameras on the system, one on the front and one on the back. Additionally, the screen on the front of the NGP (which uses OLED tech) is actually a touch screen similar to those found on various smartphones. There's also a touch pad on the back (think mouse pad) for more control opportunities.

For more on how the NGP looks and what's powering it, check out our hardware stories and video:

The Games

At the NGP conference, a few developers were on hand to show their support for the system and demonstrate what it can do. Hideo Kojima showed a cutscene from Metal Gear Solid 4 that had been ported to the Next Generation Portable, and representatives from Epic were on hand to show the Unreal engine running on the system. A new Uncharted game was revealed (which is being developed under Naughty Dog's supervision), and a new Call of Duty was announced for the platform. Among the other games shown at the conference were Yakuza, Hot Shots Golf, and Little Deviants. That's just the beginning, though, because more than 80 third-party publishers have signed on to back the handheld.

@senjutsu That's good to know. The motion controls were what scared me from the Wii. I like using the traditional style. It seems easier to go with what you know.

In New Zealand everything is expensive. I remember when the PS3 first came out in NZ it was over $1000NZ, now its about $650NZ. The 3DS is $450NZ and this thing will be around $500. Big difference between American and New Zealand money eh?

If the price is right i buy it , but if it's price is over 300 USD, i won't buy it . i will just play ps3 graphics on my pc. and i will just get 3ds for only 250 USD. because graphics its not that important its the game.

You can only see one clear image of the NGP playing a game which you can see at amazon.com. if you compare that an image of resident evil on the 3ds you will see that they both have very similar graphics.

People need look up info before they comment. Some are saying NGPs graphics are like ps3s Which is not the case here .NGPs GPU the Quad-core Power SGX543MP4 is in the 233MHz range. The 3ds GPU the DMP PICA 200 is 200MHZ PS3 has about 500 MHz that very is different processing power therefore 3DS actually has almost the same capabilities as the NGP the difference is only the quad core which the 3ds does not have

How exactly would you use the touch pad if it's on the back though? Kinda confused on this. Anyone care to explain?

rubel101 no offense but you're grammar is bad XD idc i'm just being an ***. anyway I do still agree with you, the games that are supposedly going to be released on this console look to be great! especially Uncharted. Definitely going to be getting this and I think I've found a portable console where I'm not getting it just for 1 or 2 games on it.

@rubel101: what do you mean by kiddos games? Did you play Mario Galaxy? that game has some pretty hard stages! for the DS mario partners in time and browser's story were off the hook!!. I have all 3 consoles (wii - ps3 - xbox360) and honestly the best games i've played last year were courtesy of Nintendo. Right now im really hoping for Sony to bring out some serious move games :)

@hellpolice you can play your old PSP games but only the ones from the download store. Lots of people are asking for a UMD trade in program so hopefully one will happen. I myself will only buy two games over again.

The lady in the gameplay movie made me crazy. She is like an elementary school english teacher for little kids who did not play a single game in their lifes...

I was hoping for UMD support so I can play my old games.

@Keiner It's actually quite usefull. You now can actually play a game and use its touch functions and still be seeing what you're doing on the screen!

@pwncakes52 You said: "I love it, I just hope the gameplay that they showed in the Uncharted video isnt required. I want to just use buttons, no touch-screen." The answer: Don't worry, they already said that you have the choice to use the buttons or the touch screen. It's up to you! =D Still, I'd prefer using everything, this makes the game more interresting when you play it at 6:30AM in the bus, going to university, haha. Then, when coming back, you simply push the buttons, lol.

Well, given that this is pretty much a mini ps3 (almost) the likely $300-$400 price tag will reinforce the statement, you get what you pay for!

ms is probably to smart to make just a handheld console not everybody can afford a 400 dollar console and handheld, just competing with yourself and having to spend more resources. sony just likes to saturate the market with their goods....

Give me a thumbs up if you agree with me guys: Does it seem that Microsoft is out of the picture for now because of this epic battle wit Nintendo and Apple?
