Sony Next Gen Portable specs detailed

New handheld to feature OLED touch screen, 3G, two cameras; slightly smaller than PSP-3000.

Meet the NGP.

It was probably one of the worst-kept secrets in gaming, but after months of speculation, Sony finally unveiled its successor to the PSP today at its media event in Tokyo. Codenamed the Next Generation Portable (NGP), the new handheld is set to be released in "holiday 2011" and will include features such as 3G, Wi-Fi, a rear touch pad, OLED screen, and more.

The NGP wasn't priced, but Sony did release a range of specifications for the new machine. The NGP will feature a 16:9 5-inch OLED touch screen, as well as a touch pad on the rear of the device, which is the same size as the front screen. At 182mm x 18.6mm x 83.5mm (width x height x depth), the NGP is slightly smaller than the PSP-3000, but there was no detail released on how heavy the new handheld would be.

Gamers who lamented the lack of a second analog stick on the original PSP will be heartened to know that the NGP does indeed sport twin sticks, as well as Sixaxis motion sensing built into the device. Other notable features include two cameras (front and rear), built-in GPS, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth connectivity, and more.

The full specs list for the NGP can be found below.

Just noticed that the screen resolution is exactly half that of 1080p (give or take the loss of a few vertical pixels). This is good... it means that if it supports hd-out at 1080p there won't be the terrible scaling problem that will reduce the image quality!

You can only see one clear image of the NGP playing a game which you can see at amazon.com. if you compare that an image of resident evil on the 3ds you will see that they both have very similar graphics.

People need look up info before they comment. Some are saying NGPs graphics are like ps3s Which is not the case here .NGPs GPU the Quad-core Power SGX543MP4 is in the 233MHz range. The 3ds GPU the DMP PICA 200 is 200MHZ PS3 has about 500 MHz that very is different processing power therefore 3DS actually has almost the same capabilities as the NGP the difference is only the quad core which the 3ds does not have

Haha! I have a feeling this is going to be way better than the N-Gage ever was. errr..... aka "the taco" because it looked like you were holding one to your ear to talk. I am totally excited for PSP2 and can't wait for launch. :D

Now, is it going to have small SD cards JUST for memory and bring back the UMD for media usage (PLEASE, Gaming Gods LET IT BE TRUE!!!), or are they going to be using internal memory like the PSP Go, OR... are they going to be following the DS route and revert back to a cartridge media?

In addition to this, if the device turns out to be a phone, it will surely sell like hotcakes !!!

Ram? No info on how much internal memory it has.

@kmnov from the articles I've read the PSPhone wouldn't be as hi-tech as the NGP, nor as big. The NGP already has 3G tho, so its not like your missing much bypassing the phone.

3G like Kindle? (free?) if so this is day one purchase.

One thing that isn't being mentioned is that there will be 2 models; 1 with wi-fi and 3g and one wi-fi only. The use of the 3G is being speculated, since if this is like the iPad, there may be limitations restricting the amount of data used. However if it's like the Kindle, it may only be used for updates and downloads. Right now, only time will tell.

what does "holiday season" exactly mean . Does it mean Christmas holidays or the summer holidays.

what certain people don't understand about this is, the NGP is a very conservative move. Let's say that Sony makes a PSP phone. The NGP will already be an expensive device with the features, but a phone? On top of that, a phone would have to have cartridge slots, expandable memory, extra ram, a certain graphics card... it's extra technology to go into a phone. A cell phone is expensive enough as it is, but to add extra technology to it? And which service would they use? I believe Sony is making an excellent move with the NGP and not the phone. This time, they've established what the product will feature, when is its release, and it's target market; Who is the target market? People who are interested in either gaming, technology or both. Clearly everyone is fascinated with the name itself, let alone the features. If you're a casual gamer, I am sure they will have plenty of games for that level. If you're a strict budget gamer, do what everyone else did when the PS3 came out... go cheap and get the other console. I've owned a PS2, PS3, and 2 PSPs and they were worth every penny. In my opinion, I believe Sony has learned from their mistake with the PSPgo: no tangible games, no profit! People want to trade and buy used games! Not digitally download a game and be stuck with it for the rest of their life.

lol renting games? who rents games for hand helds? I cant wait, can we say DS crusher, this thing is a beast.Itll be worth trading my psp in and paying off the rest.3ds is about to get pwned hard. And how can anyone whos a actual gamer say that they wouldnt want console gaming on the go,i hardly touch my psp because the games suck for the most part, and i for one have a hard time staring at a tiny screen with low res quality when I'm so used to playing on a big screen with high res,now I can get highdef on a handheld with all the games I love on the ps3 on the psp2,they are doing the right thing and making a hardcore hand held for hardcore gamers.I love it.

swimbearuk

I'm assuming none of the games come as hard copies? Which means renting games wouldn't be possible, and everything would be full price. A shame because it looks impressive.

Still too big to fit comfortably into my pocket...trying to decide if I need a portable device beyond my iPhone. Almost definitely going with 3DS if I do, but w/e.

Looks nice but no fracking phone please. I don't want to pay for a phone when I buy a console. People that want to play "games" on their phones can buy Angry Birds or something for their Android.

keabler

I really think Sony did an amazing job on this device; however, I think consumers don't want "console gaming" on the go (well unless the target group is 5 to 14 year old children who have to take road tips with their parents). I think Sony would have made a better move if they would have faster than average phone, that had exclusive games for it. I love gaming but I don't need to play BC2 while I wait in the airport. I think the majority of gamers would rather pay a little extra for a phone that has extra capability rather than buy a whole new device that is stupidly powerful. I recognize the psp phone, but it doesn't have "above average power."

I hope that they implement some phone into this system, I dont care if I have to use a bluetooth headset to make calls with it.

multi-touch 5" OLED, rear sensor touch, that alone is about $200. Add the rest of the specs, and we're talking $400 at the very least.

metalkid9

@aryanbrar, 3G meaning you can surf the web via satellite wherever you are. The only way you'd be able to make calls is if you have skype. It doesn't have a sim card so you won't be able to use it as an actual phone.

Here's to hoping it's never hacked...I want the dev teams to have all the money they need to keep putting out fantastic games/sequels.

Im guessing the price of this to be £50 above the 3DS. Although they havent released a UK price yet for the 3DS yet so that's not too useful. Anyway trackpad will be good for camera movement and such. Also removes the problem of having a finger across the screen. I read a survey in which back-mounted trackpads let people get to 80-90% (I think) of their standard touchscreen typing pretty quick. I predict stories however of people who drop it because they fumbled while using the touch pad.

vegeta7482

@hasancaklr No, the 3G does not mean you can use it as a phone. Just a data connection.

jecht_35

It looks great and everything but anyone who has a PS3 already has most of these games in the line up so it looks like they have focusing more on the console then the actual games so i guess for me i will wait to see what games they have later on.

To anyone who even dares badmouthing this baby it will have PS3 quality visuals and that footage of Killzone AND Wipeout looked too good to be true..but it is! Consider these games are still in development. It incorporates Sixaxis, has bluetooth, augmented reality, gyroscope sensor, front AND rear cameras, just imagine the potential for this gem. The 3G is essentially a back up for people with crappy or non-existent wi fi. OLED screen is just perfect and I can earn trophies anywhere on the go. My god Sony you have indeed been smoking the right dope. :)

hasancakir
hasancakir

@aryanbrar yes, you can use it as a phone.

hasancakir

It has awesome features but key points are still missing. Battery life, price, capacity of flash memory. My guess is the battery life will be similar to original PSP, flash memory will be around 8-16 GB like on PSP Go, and the price will be $300 in US, £230 in UK. (considering the price of 3DS -$250 in US, £200 in UK)
