Sony, Microsoft launching new consoles in 2014?

PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 makers said to be colluding to hold off on system successors, leaving Nintendo alone for E3 reveal of Wii 2.

Source: Gaming blog Kotaku.

What we heard: If the rumor mill is to be believed, Nintendo will hold a dominant presence at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo in June with the announcement of a successor to the 85 million-unit-selling Wii. Should that speculation prove accurate, Nintendo may be pleased to know that the rumor mill does not expect the publisher to be in competition with rivals Microsoft and Sony.

Kotaku reports today that it has heard from a variety of sources that neither Sony nor Microsoft plan to release a new console until 2014. "Both [Microsoft] and Sony are telegraphing to each other that they're delaying, to milk the current [generation] and fill in previous craters better," a source told the website.

The Xbox 360 and PS3 may be Microsoft and Sony's flagships for three more years.

A source also indicated to Kotaku that while 2014 is the target date for both companies, either could push the launch date forward to 2013 if they feel "pushed."

Of Microsoft's plans, the website claims that the publisher has yet to even decide the exact nature of its next console. According to Kotaku's source, Microsoft is still "wrestling with whether to be profitable on day one" for the next Xbox, similar to how Nintendo was said to have made money off of every Wii sold. Conversely, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 were reportedly initially sold at a loss by Microsoft and Sony.

The official story: Neither Microsoft nor Sony had responded to requests for comment as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus: Considering the dearth of leaks concerning Microsoft and Sony's next consoles, it seems highly unlikely that either will pull a surprise announcement at this year's E3. Additionally, by Kotaku's sources' own admission, much remains in flux surrounding the companies' new consoles, so 2014 seems at this point to be not much more than a target.

Really have no conplaints with either console at this time. I mean what more can they do. Make them lighter, give them a face lift, or increase the hard drive. Will wait, certainly have the time.

I think Xbox and PS3 should join up. I know they probably never will, but, you know how far they could go by doing that? It would completely blow everything out of the water.

M$ and Sony need to see what I kind of revolution that Nintendo will bring, and they will decided how to make "it" better in the name of their next console ...

@Renegade_angel first there were some games i listed that were not MMOs or shooters, and second someone else brought up PC gaming i was just responding to them, and my "arrogance" as you would call it is only here in response to arrogant console talk, so get your facts straight before you start talking to me

We need better consoles. But still there are a lot of games which dont have good graphics .Before new consoles , we need to make games which have good graphics. When we do it , we will be ready for new consoles

Looking forward to seeing what MS and Sony have in store for the future. They will not doubt be a gamer's dream like the 360 and PS3 are. I couldn't give a crap about what Nintendo has to reveal though.

@GodGundamNT1, actually, PCs aren't that much more expensive if you are just going to be playing console ports. Plus you're going to need a computer anyway, so comparing price gets complicated. But that's not important. What's important is what you're spending money on. If you really like all the shiney graphics then you'll need to pay for them. In the past, just buying the new consoles when they came out could do that for you. Now Sony and Microsoft are backing off, though, so the folks willing to pay out for the sweet graphics are going to need to start looking at the PC market. Of course there are plenty of folks that aren't willing to pay for that. That's fine - it's really just a matter of what you enjoy. Do you want tessalation in your games or do you want your TV to be 10 inches wider? Do you want games that play in proper 3D or do you want some nicer clothes?

To Microsoft and Sony : Seriously ? A lot of games are not even in native 720p and have a lower resolution… Make good and nice games before releasing broken and overpriced new hardware !

we're fine with what we have now (PS3 and xbox360) ,,,,although in terms of graphics now one can notice the superiority that PC games have because the PC hardware is in a continuous development unlike the consoles.........

I don't know why but it just feels too soon for a new console. Maybe I'll wait a little longer to buy a next generation system this time around.

I just love new tech. It will be tough waiting another 2 or 3 years. I can see why it's so hard for both companies to decide what to do because there are so many more things on the cutting edge of technology now. Do they include 3D as a main feature? Will they improve motion gaming or keep it the same? Will they focus on downloadable or streaming options? Blu-ray or somthing else? Too many tough questions to answer.

@nomad12345 Most of those games you listed are pretty much the same game, the PC market is almost completely run by MMO's (at least in the perspective of exclusives) and if it isn't an MMO it's a generic shooter. So basically PC has 2 exclusives. And the only reason I'm only hating on PC is because you brought your arrogant PC talk into a console article, which is uncalled for. You're doing absolutely no justice for PC gamers, whom I frown on greatly because of your unnecessary hating on other people's fun.

nomad12345
nomad12345

@malatato PC has exclusives as well ya know, good ones too, such as counter strike source day of defeat, crysis 1. the total war series age of empires, warhammer, warcraft series, most MMOs such as WoW and guild wars, and not to mention the thousands of MODs created by the community, plus RPG games such as dragon age run far better with a keyboard, ill take evrything i just listed over halo, gears of war, killzone, resustance etc

nomad12345
nomad12345

@GunBladeHero ok its true PC gaming is more expensive, but i have a 4 year old graphics card that can still run top games on high settings, so its not like your constanstly updateing your comp, and as for controls, i prefer mouse and keyboard for everything except sports games and fighting games, plus PC has the advantage of numerous exclusives and there are always new content coming out from the mod community, but i understand if you prefer the feel of a controller,

wasnt there a thing about a new ps4 being leaked not long ago??? could be coincidental but maybe not. i hope they dont release anything new for a least a few years, and they will make it actually really different to play. minority report style.

2014!? I hope not. 360 and PS3 tech is already 6 1/2 years old and while M.E.2,Crysis 2,Gears, Uncharted and God of War look great the age is starting to show. To make a lot of these games look so good in one aspect it's taken from another area. I typically build a new computer every 3 years and I don't mind getting a new console every 6 years or so. I dig the new plastic smell, the new tech., the new look. I was thinking Holiday 2012; most of the tech will be in a good spot by then, CPUs,SSDs,GPUs, ect. I'm still excited for Uncharted 3, Gears of War 3 and some others but by this time next year I hope that a new console arriving is what's on my mind.

JusticeFromSeed said - "@Johny_47 Wrong and completely unfounded. Call your local GameStop - we still sell plenty of 360s. My store sells more 360 stuff than all but PS2 (low income housing pretty close to our store)." Don't know what 'unfounded' means, here in the UK we don't have GameStop. The consoles today(even the PS3) is really starting to struggle with showing off anything new and extraordinary like everyone was thinking of back when they were released, they need an upgrade by 2014 big time(or sooner). Just hope they get every bit of goodness out of them like with PS2. NickDrakePink72 said - "@Johny_47 If they came together, you would see the quality of the games diminish. Exclusive games from both consoles get special attention so that the games attract people to the particular system. It is good to have competition between the major companies in the video game industry for competition causes both of them to really strive to make improvements in their games. If Microsoft and Sony merged, it would be a very bad thing for consumers." I said because of advancement in technology, it might be bad for 'bettering' games and trying to catch people's attention but it might be incredible too, I believe they could make a console that's able to do VR(virtual reality). And not as if every developer 'strives' today, just look at how crap and 'rehashed' call of duty games are and they compete with other FPS games, they've been that way for years but people still buy them.

"Both [Microsoft] and Sony are telegraphing to each other that they're delaying, to milk the current [generation] and fill in previous craters better," You sure could learn a lesson from this, Nintendo. I'm sure glad I didn't get your Wii if you're abandoning it this soon with such pathetic 3rd party support. Matter of fact I'm glad I didn't get your Gamecube for the exact same reason. Pity I got an xbox 1 though... dammit.

Sony are still going to launch the awesome NGP at the end of the year, so they're still investing in new tech and pushing the handheld market forward. Next gen consoles are massively expensive projects and Sony particularly have a very solid and reliable workhorse in the PS3 and would last easily for another 3 years. I don't think the XBox360's reliability will go the distance, given the death rate of the hardware.

Kotaku? KOTAKU? Haha, Kotaku is the centre of all rumours. They come out with as much B*** S*** as the entire COD franchise. Granted that the 360 and PS3 are very aged and their successors was only a matter of time. But anyone on this earth could have predicted this. This is neither news nor important until there are actual details, on the consoles themselves.

This is nothing new for Sony because before they even released the PS3 they were claiming a 10 year life cycle and promised they wouldn't release the PS4 before 2014. I know a company can break their promises but it makes business sense because because with power of the cell processor and the capacity of blu-ray the PS3 can easily last that long. Not sure about Microsoft though because I know they are starting to hit a storage wall with several devlelopers such as ID with Rage publicly criticizing the storage capacity of the Xbox360's DVD based games.

This actually matches up with my prediction a couple years back that Nintendo would be the first to update their technology while Microsoft and Sony would push for much longer console cycles (about seven years rather than five). Consoles usually bring graphical improvements, but now that the XBOX 360 and PlayStation 3 both do 1080p, simple resolution increases aren't gonna cut it. Some DirectX 11-class features will probably become the norm, and I expect to see increased parallelism, but I doubt that any of us want to shell out another $400-$500 for additional texture resolution. Nintendo has to come into the HD era; that's a no-brainer.

SciFiCat

Well if that does happen, that would mean that Sony may drop complete support for PS3 around 2016-2017. I don't believe Microsoft will drop support for Xbox360 overnight as they did with Xbox 1, otherwise they will deprive themselves of a revenue stream as the one Sony had with the gradual transition during the PS2 to PS3 generational overlap.

2014 or 2015, highly likely. Good to know the next generation is still 3-4 years away, I have yet to buy a current gen console (although my PC makes up for it to quite an extent, only missing out on exclusives).

Darth_Tyrranus
Darth_Tyrranus

@x-2tha-z Nevertheless, I don't think it is unreasonable to at least expect Sony to fulfill its promises. If you don't trust Sony's word, then why did you buy their products? Also, I think we both know that as soon as the tentative "PS4" is released, game developers will be immediately encouraged to make games for the PS4 and NOT the PS3. I wouldn't count PS2's last dying breath as part of its life cycle.

Microsoft are more then likely holding it back to just to see how Kinect will go. It could have a big future, if only they would release some killer games for it.
