Sony looking into The Last of Us PS4 discount for those with a PS3 copy

"We’re looking into the business model," says Naughty Dog's Eric Monacelli.

Sony is considering offering a discount for those looking to pick up the PlayStation 4 version of The Last of Us if they already own the game on PS3.

"We’re looking into the business model for all this and will post about this once we have input from all regions," said Naughty Dog's Eric Monacelli on the PlayStation Blog.

The Last of Us Remastered Edition, due out this summer, gives Naughty Dog's critical and commercial hit a lick of next-gen paint, as well as bundling in all of the game's DLC, though Sony has faced criticism from some fans for opting to sell the title for full retail price on PS4 when the PS3 version isn't even a year old.

Next-gen upgrades were offered in force by Sony last Christmas, where customers could download a digital PS4 version of last year's seasonal heavy hitters--such as Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Call of Duty: Ghosts--for a reduced price if they already owned the PS3 version of the game.

it better be a crossbuy, i was pissed off enough when it was 35 dollars for playstion plus after only a month or so, and i had already spent 60 bucks

TLOU is one of those rare games that deserves my $60 twice. I am keeping the PS3 version forever and will be buying the PS4 disc version. Naughty Dog deserves my money.

If they can make this happen and at a good price, I will buy the upgrade, otherwise it gets buried with my ps3.

With all of the bundled in DLC in the remastered edition you're only paying around $12 for the PS4 version. So $12 for native 1080p and 60fps? I'll take that. If they do an upgrade system that they had for games like BF, COD and Fifa then you're getting the game for around what? $2 really.

I hope they do, paid top dollar for the Digital PS3 version. I definitely will not be re-buying it at the same price.

Glad to see Sony is still listening to gamers/customers.

It's good to see they are looking into offering a discount for those who already own the game.

I would hope there's an upgrade program similar to last year's launch program. Getting ten more bucks from me is better than getting nothing, right?

and here I've already sold my ps3 copy for 40 waiting to pick up the ps4 version second hand for about the same amount I made off the ps3 version

With a discount, depending on how much is it in the end, will deter mine for me if I should get it or not. Regardless, smart move ND.

I own it on the ps3 and was considering buying the game again on ps4 because I love it. But the price is too high for me to justify a second purchase.

I'd need at least half of what it costs now (more than some other games on the ps4) before I buy it.

Good news, I hope they come through with it, I own the game on my PS3 and would surely pay a discounted price to have it on PS4, full retail price is a bit too much for previous owners imo, even if it includes DLCs.

To be honest I am actually convinced I'll buy it nonetheless, even at $60, a discounted price will make me pick it up earlier tho

Glad to see Naughty dog are doing the right thing. I have the PS3 version and will be getting the PS4 version, so I'm pleased that they are not going to rip off loyal customers. That damages their integrity and breaks customer loyalty. But the trouble is I prefer disc versions so I'm hoping they subsidise the retail discs as well. Discs are easier to re-instal at a later date than performing a hefty download all the time.

I cannot wait to spend some more time with Joel and Ellie. I replayed it 4 times on different difficulties because the core gameplay changes on each setting. It's not just a difficulty change. Your strategic options change which gives the game a totally different feel. Now I really miss the game after not playing it for several months, but I've been holding off a replay until I get the PS4 version.

I'm doing same with GTAV. If only we could have the Uncharted series, Skyrim and Far Cry 3 remastered on PS4 as well. Sometimes dreams come true.

If they offer this proposed discount if you already own it for PS3, i'd likely buy it again. Even though I've already platinumed it. The game is that good.

The way these consoles are going right now, I'm becoming less upset every day that I sold my XB1 this week. Maybe by the time I buy a new one and a PS4 there will be some actual games like Watch Dogs or Wolfenstein out. Until then, mustard race needs me.

I was one of those who QQ'd but I don't even care. Who still has their receipt? I don't. Just price it at 39.99 and problem solved. Those TLOU owners who do actually think the game is worth money will gladly spend 40 dollars for a new copy. Those who saw the game for what it is, a good movie with some unfortunate corridor shooting interims between scenes, will not.

"though Sony has faced criticism from some fans for opting to sell the title for full retail price on PS4 when the PS3 version isn't even a year old."

I don't understand how it being less than a year old makes this more objectionable. If you're going to charge $60, would it be more justifiable to wait until AFTER a year, or before a year? If it released a month after PS3, would $60 be fair on PS4?

Some games just don't get discounted for years. Look at CoDs or Nintendo games. The PS3 version of TLOU is still $60. Why shouldn't the PS4 version be? It would make no sense if the PS4 version is cheaper than the PS3 version. If the PS4 version is to be cheaper, it would mean the PS3 version would need a price drop also (and an even bigger one since the PS4 version has DLC included). Why do that if they are still selling copies at $60? A game dropping from $60 to $40 in less than a year is not a good sign for the game itself.

That would be nice. I can wait. lol!! I'm not paying $60 for it, I can tell you that right now.

Got the collector's edition, want another collector's edition. Need more collector's editions. Must have Last of Us for Ps4, doesn't matter how. Either I get the discount or not, either way I'll have Last of Us for Ps4.

Aaronp2k

I knew they'd do this. Here's hoping they do it for other last gen games which are remade for ps4. like gta v for instance, but I am starting to doubt gta v will come to ps4.

i for one, got a ps4 about two weeks ago. For now i only play BF4 and KZ shadowfall. Mostly BF4 though. I am looking forward to this remake since i own a 360 and not a ps3. Wish they did the same with Beyond Two Souls, too bad that one didn't have the success of TLOU.

They could offer some sort of scaling discount. Full MSRP for those that don't have the game at all, and a discount based on how much DLC was purchased for the original. That way no one feels paticularly cheated.

As for me, of all the great things I've heard about the game, I never bought it, so I'm in the position where the price is a non-issue to me.

Choad-Warrior
Choad-Warrior

Yes please. I mean, the game looks pretty enough, and I'm more than content to have a playthrough on my PS3, but I'd waste money on a PS4 copy if I got a discount. I mean, it only cost $10 to "upgrade" Assassin's Creed and all those titles.

snake3rules
snake3rules

This is a good idea, and likely the only way I'd consider buying it. I love the uncharted series-- replayed them to death-- and I really enjoyed LOU, but I'm not really too interested in playing it again on ps4... especially not at $60

And then sell it, knowing its library will improve over time?

@grenadehh  I don´t care about the price, I want my discount. I would gladly pay 39.99 if people who don´t own the game paid 59.99, if I pay the same price I would feel like they are stealing from me.

@lostn  It matters because of MSRP and market value. TLOU is still $60 in most brick and mortar stores - if you're lucky, you'll find it for $30 online.

So the thing is - you can't be going around charging $60 for both the previous 10 month old version, and the brand new upscaled version. Doing so means there's an obvious disparity somewhere - if you're paying $60 for the last gen version when the new version is also $60, you're getting ripped off. You can charge $60, but then the price of the original game is going to have to go way down.

It's shady and frankly disgusting business practice.

raydawg2000

@lostn  I hear and totally agree with you man, its pretty dumb and just a sign that people just need something to complain about.  Probably going to get the same whiners with The Show 14, since the PS4 version is released a month after PS3 then i suppose the PS4 version should be discounted because its only a month old??

Spartan_418

@playstationzone some physical PS3 games still let you upgrade, you would download the digital PS4 game and play it with the PS3 disc sitting in the tray

@DGfishingtime @stuff238  I disagree, it's a great game, I won't deny that, but unless there's something that will entice me to have to pay 60 dollars again, then it's better to go for a discount.

lostn

@grenadehh If you're saying this is different because unlike TLOU, they did not release 10 months apart, well.. do you really think CoD or BF4 will get price drops within 10 months of release either? No they won't. They will still be the full priced $60, and then it will be exactly no different to the TLOU price situation here. Current gen and last gen versions selling for the same price.

Why would a game that won multiple GOTY awards drop it's price in less than a year? That only happens when a game doesn't sell, or isn't well liked. If your game is good why would you cut its price this quickly? That sends a message that the game just isn't selling, or isn't worth $60. I don't know if your objection is that the PS3 version is too expensive or if the PS4 version should cost more than it, but you can't say that $60 is too much for a PS4 game.

lostn
lostn

@grenadehh "It matters because of MSRP and market value. TLOU is still $60 in most brick and mortar stores - if you're lucky, you'll find it for $30 online."

Well how do you know you won't also get the PS4 version for $30 online?

"So the thing is - you can't be going around charging $60 for both the previous 10 month old version, and the brand new upscaled version. Doing so means there's an obvious disparity somewhere - if you're paying $60 for the last gen version when the new version is also $60, you're getting ripped off. You can charge $60, but then the price of the original game is going to have to go way down."

Really now?  Because Titanfall X1 and 360 version are also both $60. So is CoD: Ghost. So is BF4. So is Assassin's Creed 4. The X1/PS4 versions of these games are better looking than the 360/PS3 versions. Are people who buy the 360/PS3 versions of cross platform games getting ripped off also?

"It's shady and frankly disgusting business practice."

Your sense of entitlement is frankly naive.

As I stated, I already own the PS3 version. So no matter how it's cut, it's a waste to buy another copy; updated graphics aside.
