Sony lays out downloadable PS3 slate

Publisher details Elefunk and PixelJunk Monsters expansion, Echochrome set for early May.

Sony's PlayStation Network doesn't see new games as frequently as the Xbox Live Marketplace or Nintendo's Virtual Console. But if a press event held specifically to hype the next wave of downloadable PlayStation 3 games is any indication, the electronics giant is far from neglecting its digital distribution endeavor.

One of the most anticipated PSN games, Echochrome, finally received a release window. The Escher-esque perspective-shifting puzzler is penciled in for early May on both the PS3 and PlayStation Portable.

As for less prominent projects, Sony unveiled PixelJunk Monsters Encore, an expansion pack to the original Q Games strategy puzzle game. Encore will give owners of the original game 15 new levels, visual tweaks like new weather effects, and rebalanced gameplay. The game is expected to arrive in late April.

While Elefunk was revealed in a series of screenshots released last year during the E3 Media and Business Summit, Sony gave gamers a bit more insight into 8bit Games' puzzler this week. Given a variety of gorges and an assortment of bridge-building pieces, players must help elephants get from point A to point B without falling prey to gravity and local wildlife. In addition, the game will have bonus levels that require players to perform Evel Knievel-style canyon jumps with a motorcycle-bound pachyderm, as well as multiplayer and Time Attack modes.

For more from the press event, check out GameSpot's previews of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Echochrome, Elefunk, PixelJunk Monsters Encore, and Wipeout HD.

Im guessing since they mentioned XBL in the article it just became a XBL vs PSN kind of thing. But yes Id love to see those games comming to downloadable content on the PS Network, they should bring back most of the games on PSOne and make it downloadable, jsut dont make it overpriced, I wanna play Vagrant Story, the old Tekkens 1 and 2,maybe 3 but ..nah. Grandia is awsome, and Parasite Eve , the Wild Arms on PS was one of the best in the franchise. Persona, Medievil , Dragon Warrior, and the original 2D Mega man series :)... just thoughts

tyler2357
tyler2357

Such as being able to play Final Fantasy 7 & 8 & 9, Crono Cross, Xenogears, Legend of Dragoon, Grandia, Driver 1& 2, all Twisted Metals, Worms Armageddon, Parasite Eve 1&2, all Wild Arms, Saga Frontier, Breath of Fire 4, Gran Turismo 1&2, Frogger, Duke Nukem, Command and Conquer, Valkyrie Profile, Soul Reaver, and Road Rash. They should put these on the PSN.

Why are yall arguing about which is better? This article is only about PSN downloadable games. what people should be talking about are which games should be on PSN to download.

@some_one_plays ok i see but the update is 3hoursd still!!!! :) what i also hate is a lot of people think that we actually play our games on dedicated servers most of them are just P2P (im talking in general as of ps3 and 360 users) @thekodaman what do you think we have been trying to do lol £40 for a year isnt bad though but if ps3 starts upping their online and adding those baubles and its still free then MS will have to rethink the pricec (free :)

thekodaman
thekodaman

Hey, PSN is a great service for it being free and ultimately who really cares about the little baubles they add onto XBL, like downloadable demos (a few weeks earlier) when esentially PSN provides the same core service as XBL but for free. Xbox360 gamers should lobby Microsoft to drop the charges for using XboxLive since they are totally irrelevant in this generation, why should they pay for a service everybody else is getting for free?

lol, it was a statement just to how you that XBOX Live will shut down because everyone is connected to one source. The only reason why I commented was because everyone thinks XBOX 360 has P2P and and PlayStation 3 dedicated servers. When it's XBOX 360 has Client Servers (or one big server connected to many different games) and PlayStation 3 has P2P servers. XBOX Live can shut down if traffic happens again not the PlayStation 3.

XBL is not stable a few months ago XBL I remember became unavailable... And will MS refund us back the time we lost when we paid up front for service... I dont thinks so... More and more people are slowly buying the PS3... I own a X360 had mine sent to be fixed recently I'm almost afraid to keep playing with because it might break again... American made, just like american cars, unrealiable.... I always buy Japanese...

psn is great for being free, it doenst have as many demos ect as xbox live because companys have to pay for things to be hosted, were as xboxlive u dont, well thats my understanding i could be wrong. xbox live is great tho and psn is good for being a free service.

CrazedColombian, XboxLive cost is $49.99 a year . Not 50 bucks a month.

the wii is only fun for about 2 hrs, and then u realize u just paid 300 bucks for ur old xbox with a motion capture contronller.... PS3 and Xbox 360 are just about the same thing. Both only have 3rd party games as none have a 1st party title of the calibur of Mario or Zelda which basically keep Nintendo in business because I had a game cube and think the only 4 games i had were sunshine, zelda and metroid 1+2.... 3rd parties dont make games for nintendo and with the wii if they do these games are very kiddy or just not fun to play I prefer to pay 400 for a ps3 with a blu ray player(sweet for movies) than 350 for an elite that cant play blu ray and I have to pay 50 bucks a month for a service that charges me for just about everything !!! Xbox has Halo and Ninja Gaiden PS3 has Metal Gear and Final Fantasy its up to u what u want to get, but the more and more we get through this generation more companies are going to be making games for PS3 and porting them to Xbox, just like in the last Gen so far have all the systems and think PS3 is the worse but that is because it has no games think Metal Gear will change that

laitheybaby
laitheybaby

sixaxis has a pop at the wii control scheme and the psn is a cheap knockoff of xbox live. wheres your innovation this gen sony? blu ray? no one can deny that the ps3s top priority this gen was to sell blu ray. why support a console that doesnt focus on innovation in video games like microsoft and nintendo are doing?? why support a console that takes advantage of gamers to launch its new disc format and brings nothing new to the table in gaming?? if you even attempt to tell me that i am wrong and that sonys top priority (number one priority) wasnt to sell blu ray at all then i am afraid you are in denial. I couldn't give a crap about the playstation this gen until i see something i havent seen before. screw the psn lol.

XBL is more Stable and has a better online service, PSN has those things but not even close to a quarter of what XBL has to offer, dont get me wrong I love PSN but common guys... some can say yes the 50 $ a year is something for XBL employees to give more of their time for you, but isnt that jsut business :).

Fact Xbox Live Better Online That Ps3 And Wii. lot you guys cry about 50.00 year xbox live that tell me most are you are poor can pay 5.99 per month.

johncalmc

I can't believe people are using "You have to pay $50 a year of XBL" as a reason why PSN is better. I don't even have a 360, so don't even bother calling me a fanboy, but $50? Christ, I spend the UK equivalent of that on a taxi on a night out. And you're complaining about paying that for an entire year of allegedly good online gaming? If you're that worried about spending money why the hell did you buy a PS3 in the first place? You could have had two years of XBL paid for with the difference in price between the PS3 and 360. Personally, I'd much rather pay $50/£25 a year and get a really good online service. PSN has been alright for me. I've had some fun on there. But it is prone to the odd hiccup here and there, and the downloadable content on the store (EU) is absolutely dire.

Beaglesniffer
Beaglesniffer

@ some_one_plays it says it will be down for 3 hours not 2 days!!! 'fanboy' and why are you even trying to prove the ps3 when this topic isnt about x360 v ps3 off topic!!!!

On XBOX Live if you sign in it will say from Microsoft that XBOX Live will be shut down for two days due to updates / upgrades. With the PlayStation Network when there is an update they don't need to warn everyone they just download it. Remember the XBOX Live Christmas shortage in 2007 due to traffic. That won't happen with the PlayStation Network, 2 million people can join today and nothing will happen.

If you go on XBOX.com you'll see that they advertise that they have the most advanced match making system. With PlayStation Network the developers have to create their own match making system. Why do you think mods are allowed with Unreal Tournament 3 with the PlayStation 3 version?

EnnV
EnnV

Some_One_Plays: Yes you log onto XBox Live servers, but you do not play games on the servers, they are run from whoever is hosting the game room. Which games have you been playing? All 360 games (COD4, RB6V, Crackdown, RR6, C&C to name a few) that I have played will kick people out of the game when the host leaves!?

XBOX 360 = Client Servers and PlayStation 3 = Peer to Peer Servers. On XBOX Live Microsoft will send you a message saying that Live will be down for two days due to updates. That's because everyone is connected to Microsoft so they control everything. With the PlayStation 3 they can have updates without warning you about anything.

So XBOX Live is one big server while the PlayStation 3 has servers for each individual game. P2P almost eliminates if not, the need for servers all together. So if I was a person holding a game and I sign out of the game XBOX Live will resign a new leader. With PlayStation 3 if I was holding a server and I sign out everyone gets the boot. In conclusion XBOX Live is one big server and PlayStation 3 has many dedicated servers for each game.

That's the big argument about PlayStation 3 developers have to set up their own networks while XBOX Live is there for them. They mentioned this at GDC 08 Microsoft's keynote.

Pixel Junk Monsters is money well spent!!! While I do own a 360 too, I don't buy many original download games for it. PSN has better (but less) games of original content. Yes, it's great that it's free. People are begining to come around with more great games on the horizon......April- Gran Turismo, May- Echochrome, June- Metal Gear Solid 5, July- Home, Sept.- xmas brings Final Fantasy XIII, Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, Resistance 2......Sony rules this xmas with exclusives....hands down. Xbox has Fable 2, Halo Wars, Gears of War 2.......Nintendo has Mario Kart and.......Sony rules xmas with a price drop coming. People you CAN own more than one system!!!!!!!

EnnV
EnnV

Some_One_Plays: Firstly PC mainly uses Client/Server for its multiplayer games, XBOX uses P2P, and my experience with PS3 is limited to say the least, but the games I have played have been Client/Server. Me thinks you are confused.

Andrew_Xavier
Andrew_Xavier

Some_One_Plays, the entire XBL is p2p, there's no MS dedicated servers, there are some PSN dedicated servers (Warhawk for example). Also, PSN is free, XBL is paid, I think you had it reversed.

For the people who say the PlayStation Network (PSN) isn't like XBOX Live (XBL) because you pay. For one the PSN has P2P servers which is done a lot on the PC (Personal Computer) platform. Instead of making an individual name for every game they unified it like XBL. So they have PC like experiences with networks and have a unified names like XBL.

XBL uses Client servers so everyone is being handled by Microsoft while PSN has P2P that is being handled by developers. If you want to know the differences just check out my profile just over my blogs. Overall I would choose P2P servers than Client servers because if one game's servers go down everyone suffers.

In conclusion because you pay it doesn't mean it'll be better it just means developers handle the servers. So if a game doesn't have good online with the PlayStation 3 it's the developer's fault. Sony just controls the stores and soon PlayStation Home.

"im happy with psn and guess what, i dont have to pay 50 dollars a year for it : D its FREE!!!!!" Conversely, if you pay for a service - like XBL - then you expect a better service, which XBL delivers Each to his own and you get what you pay for. Simple - and I'm glad there's a choice so I say good to both. That's one reason why fanboyism is a waste of time

nygiants1080

Most of the negative comments about PSN probably come from either Xbox fanboys or owners of both the PS3 and 360. The people who have XBL with there 360 are use to a higher standard so to them (like me), it doesn't measure up when we use PSN. All in all though, PSN is a great free service and is overlooked because of XBL.

People who complain about PSN, well switch to xbox live if your ready to fork over $50 a year, and quite honestly PSN is just the perfect thing you can get for free, like people complain rapidly but people on here who own PS3s how often have yours broken, I OWN PS3, 360, and WII. I have had 6 differnt 360's, 1 PS3, and 1 Wii.

michaelrjohnson

I own the 360, PS3, and Wii, and use all of their online modes. I love all three systems because they each have great strengths. However when it comes to online, PSN is absolutely dominated by the other two when it comes to content, services, and interface. Not hating, it is just a simple fact.

What's funny is that all the people that bash PSN on this site constitute about 1% of the actual user population that uses it, probably less. Hell, over half the comments are probably from rabid Xbox fanboys who have never even touched a PS3 in their life. My point is that the other 99% of PSN users don't log onto internet forums to share their "educated opinion" about the service, either because they don't have a computer or because - and this is the more likely reason - they're quite satisfied with it. While the entirety of that 99% of people might not ALL be fans of the service, I think it's safe to assume that the majority of them are when you consider how many people have an account and how many millions of things have been downloaded already. So at the end of the day, your 1% versus their 99% is kind of a losing battle, no? Do yourselves a favour and try to formulate an opinion that isn't so ignorant and negative, because if statistics mean anything, all you're doing is making yourself look stupid.

Shooterdown
Shooterdown

That great news, about time. Still a long way to go to be at XBL level but the more options I have the better. XBL has full gen advantage to be better so not a suprise. The options for downloadable on all three now is getting us closer to a perfect world.

NachoPSN: Couldn't agree more. There are some good games on Live, but it remonds me of those old Shareware discs you used to be able to get. Some of the stuff is a bit iffy and whilst enjoyable in it's own way, hardly makes you want to buy the whole game. PSN has some bad games too, but the overall production value and quality of PSN titles is higher for sure.

darkride66
darkride66

VegetaJr said "Actually, with the PSN, you get neither quantity nor quality." That's one opinion, however a quick check of metacritic reviews would show plenty of quality over the PSN. Not even mentioning GT5 prologue coming, Tekken? Warhawk? These are outstanding titles. I'm still playing through PixelJunk Monsters with my wife and Flow and Everyday Shooter are two examples that show just how widely accepted quirky, independent games can be. I frankly don't want quickly ported PS1 and PS2 games. If you own a PS3 and are not using this service you're really missing out.
