Sony honors Japanese top sellers

Sony Japan doles out feel-good accolades for more than a dozen of its best-selling games at its 2006 PlayStation Awards show.

by

Final Fantasy XII led Sony Computer Entertainment Japan's list of winners at this year's PlayStation Awards. The July 25 awards show recognized PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable titles that have become best sellers, based on sales data gathered through April 30.

This year's awards placed the titles into three categories: double platinum, for games that have sold between 2 million and 3 million copies; platinum, for 1 million to 2 million; and gold, for 500,000 to 1 million.

Square Enix's Final Fantasy XII--set for an October 31 release in the US--took home the only double-platinum award, despite being one of the most recently released games on the list. A dozen other games--11 PlayStation 2 titles and one on the PSP--scored appearances in the other two categories.

In the platinum category, the two latest Winning Eleven titles were honored, along with Square Enix's Disney-themed role-playing game Kingdom Hearts II. Among the gold-category honorees were Resident Evil 4, Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 12, Dirge of Cerebus: Final Fantasy VII, and five other titles, including the lone PSP game, Monster Hunter Freedom.

A complete list of this year's winners--with their platforms, publishers, and Japanese release dates--is below:

Pretty much what I would excpept from a Japanese PS2 chart. Winning Eleven, Final Fantasy (Among other SE games), a DBZ game and the Super Robot Wars series. @azafirster: Super Robot Wars is a RPG series with lots of Super & Real Robot series included, such as Gundam, as well as Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, Gunbuster, Ideon, Combattler V and others.

MH Freedom has sold immensely in Japan and worldwide. Sony should be thanking Capcom for releasing it on the PSP.

I just knew that a Square Enix game will get the Double P! Great job sEnix! You're the greatest. But how come KHII only got a gold? Too bad. At least FFXII got the DP! And ONLY FFXII! Yoshii!

I can't believe that KHll didn't get DP and FFXII got it. this is an outrage

First off, for some of you guyz that complain that MGS3 isn't here, it's because it already got its platinum title last year. These awards are handed out on a yearly basis as the number of units rack up. I guess the only thing you are viable to complain about is that it stayed in platinum and hasnt reached double platinum yet. (which ain't suprising since MGS is one of those japanese products that are more popular outside of japan, like the anime Ghost in the Shell) And oh yeah... Three Cheers for Squeenix!!!

This sucks. Resi 4 deserves far more than Gold, though I am aware that this is decided by sales, not ratings or votes.

FFXII double platinum doesn't surpise me at all...It deserves more credit than that.... I have already played the game in japanese version and i think it it will be game of the year and the best Final Fantasy franchise to date... believe me it so awesome... the graphics, the story and the characters were perfectly executed in the game.... Though i have finished it already i'll still be getting the english version and i cant wait for that too. Cant wait for FFXIII and KH3 in PS3 that will be GREAT!!!

i guess FFXII was very popular. the only double platinum and its the lastest game released on that list. it hasnt even come to US yet. thats amazing that so many people bought that game so fast. it will be far more sells here since our country is so much bigger, so expect to have at least 5 million sales (counting japannese sales)

To Sun-Hun who asked about how FF12 compares to FF7 and FF8 in terms of worldwide sales... FF12 hasn't been released outside of Japan yet so you can't start comparing yet.

Soccer is big in Japan and almost all the world except for the U.S. Well i don't like final fantasy but hey i agree with ramza 14 that they should bring it to this continent... Resident Evil is better than most of them but i know that not everyone loves to kill people and solve puzzles, keys or whatever in a game. Okay then take care and good night!

This has nothing to do with quality, music also gets this kind of awards in the same way, and most of today music that gets it is truly crappy. So we cant judge a quality of a game because it sold to much or to little. By the way, lets remember that RE 4 was released previously for the GC so sales are most likely to be lower that its counter part "Cause I'm as free as a bird now,And this bird you'll never change.Lord knows, I can't change." FreeBird, Lynyrd Skynyrd

It´s good to see that in Japan most people buy some of the best games available. It´s kinda sad though that other amazing ps2 titles released this and last year in Japan didn´t make it up there.I suppose RE4 didn´t sell more for two reasons: 1.)ratings are stricter than the U.S 2.)Japanese don´t like violent/horror games so much as westerners do.

Always good to see a money meritocracy. Oh, crap, no - that's how we get crappy games! Not that I have anything against Square-Enix...

so Dirge of Carbirus actually sold something? that game didn't had good reviws in japan and people was talking about how bad it is, but hey it says FF 7 on the cover so thats expected.

Samurai Warriors 2? Ehhh, credibility just went down a bit.

Nice. It's good to see things like this. The article failed to mention that the winners of the games, such as Square Enix and Capcom go home with cash based on whatever position their game was placed in. So Square Enix basically, approximetly walked away with $3,500,000 courtesy of Sony. This is a great thing, because it rewards games that do great for the console, and also rewards developers for creating top tier games. This is great incentive for other companies to make great games for the Playstation 2, Playstation Portable, and Playstation 3. I think the reason Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater wasn't on the list, was because the game was released in 2004. That's the only reason I see it not being on the list, because I know the game sold far more than 1 million copies in Japan alone.
