Sony gets rights for Angry Birds movie

Rovio says several "major" studios pursued the global film rights before Sony Pictures won out; movie to launch July 1, 2016.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has obtained the exclusive worldwide distribution rights for the upcoming Angry Birds movie, developer and publisher Rovio Entertainment has announced.

Several "major" studios reportedly pursued the film rights in recent weeks before Sony Pictures emerged as the winner. The 3D film will be developed, produced, and financed by Rovio Entertainment and released by Sony Pictures on July 1, 2016.

Sony Pictures CEO Michael Lynton and co-chairman Amy Pascal said in a joint statement that their company is overjoyed to distribute the film, one that they believe will be a hit.

"Every studio in town would love to add Angry Birds to their slate. There are few titles out there that bring this kind of excitement, brand awareness and built-in audience to the table," the pair said. "We're thrilled to be distributing this film and we hope this is just the beginning of what will be a long relationship with Rovio as we look for ways to work on future projects together."

Iron Man producer David Maisel is attached to the Angry Birds film as executive producer, with Despicable Me producer John Cohen also on board in a producing role.

The forthcoming Angry Birds film will mark Rovio Entertainment's first stride into feature films, but not the first animated video production from the company. Angry Birds Toons launched in March through apps, select video-on-demand providers, and TV networks. The series has drawn more than 150 million views through apps alone in its first six weeks.

There's never been much story behind these games.  How could this possibly take 3 yrs to produce?  That seems ludicrous.

But Sony Animation sucks ballz,, (Starship Troopers: Invasion, RE: Degeneration.)

only Disney/ Pixar that is excellent on animation department. other than that are Blue Sky Studio (Rio) and Dreamworks (Kungfu Panda)

whoever made this deal should be fired.

Don't they realize that Angry Birds is just a fad that will not be relevant in 2016.

I like how I got a push update from Rovio about a new episode of their cartoon. Hey Rovio the game is a nice diversion, but everything else is BS.

Anybody else get the feeling that this film will make the Street Fighter, Super Mario Brothers and Double Dragons movies look good?

Well, it's been confirmed. July 1, 2016 marks the day of the apocalypse, where we will be bombarded by idiotic birds from the sky while everyone's in movie theaters.

Too funny. LOL@ Angry Bird film.

The games are ok, but I'm not sure how a movie would do in theaters. I even get a kick out of the Om nom animation, but those short flicks are only a few minutes long. That's the way Angry Birds should stay. I'd rather see a new South Park film or a Incredibles 2 more then anything else on the big screen.

It's perfectly OK. As long as it's rated EB-7 (Everyone Below 7) with the warning "No admittance for non pressure suit-equipped adults to avoid IQ loss and possible brain damage".

A movie was inevitable for sure, but will Angry Birds still be relevant in 2016?

I presume we get to watch the movie free on PS+ in about 2017. I'll sit here and wait patiently then....

@SavoyPrime I think it is already a Cartoon series, far removed from the game, (in the same way the PAC MAN cartoon was)

@J4m3sR4n0r72 The Van Damme Street Fighter was at least so bad it's good and Double Dragons seem to be that way too. I'd say this film will make the Doom movie look good.

Yeah, I agree, Sony Animation kind of sucks ballz,, (Starship Troopers: Invasion, RE: Degeneration.) their quality ranging from mediocre to average at best.

only Disney/ Pixar that is excellent on animation department. other than that are Blue Sky Studio (Rio) and Dreamworks (Kungfu Panda)
