Sony game sales slide

Company overall posts first profit in five years, but Game division sees sales dip 12.2 percent due to falling PS3, PSP, and PS Vita sales.

Sony posted its first full-year profit in five years during the latest quarter, but the company's game division wasn't a factor in the resurgence.

For the year ended March 31, Sony's Game sector saw revenue decrease 12.2 percent year-over-year to ¥707.1 billion ($7.2 billion). Sony attributed the downturn primarily to a dip in PlayStation 3, PSP, and PlayStation Vita hardware and software sales.

Operating income for Sony's Game sector fell ¥27.6 billion year-over-year to ¥1.7 billion ($17.2 million). This marked decrease was due to the aforementioned decrease in platform sales, as well as the impact of the February PS Vita price cut in Japan.

During the year, Sony sold 16.5 million combined PS3 and PS2 hardware units, compared to 18 million a year ago. The company moved 153.9 million software units for the platforms in the year, down from 164.5 million last year.

Turning to portables, Sony sold 7 million combined PSP and PS Vita units in the year, up from 6.8 million last year. Portable software sales hit 28.8 million copies this year, down from 32.2 million last year.

Looking ahead, Sony said it expects to sell an additional 10 million PS3 units in the coming year. The company gave no guidance for PS2 or PlayStation 4. Combined PSP and PS Vita sales in the coming year are expected to hit 5 million.

By comparison, Nintendo said last month that it expects to sell 18 million 3DS units in the coming year.

Overall, Sony posted a profit of ¥43 billion ($435.6 million) for the full year, better than the ¥456 billion ($4.6 billion) loss the company suffered last year. Revenue for the year hit ¥6.8 trillion ($72.3 billion), up 4.7 year-over-year.

well, if they managed to turn a profit after 5 years, in a time when people have no money, and gamers are holding on buying new consoles while waiting for the next gen, I guess they must be doing something right.

get the ball rolling sell the console with a shitload of games, and other tidbits

Hmm probably people worried from all of the misleading article posted that the console is going to cost them a second mortgage and are probably saving up.

That and most of the new games out are really starting to feel like they belong to an older generation. Nothing in them ever feeling really new and advanced.

People are ready for the change.

Five million units... this probably means that nothing significant will com to PS Vita in the next year.

There's nothing to Sony to worry about. It's not like they are still trying to make it work.

most sales dip when a new console is announced, be pretty silly to buy a new ps3 right now

I don't understand how these guys make a profit with so much offers they make. I just found out that PS+ games for June will be the Team Ico collection and Demon's Souls. Seriously? They give so much great stuff to costumers...

I wonder how can people waste 50$ on Live Gold, when that same 50$ can be used on PS+...

BUT GUYS!!! NINTENDO IS DOOMED!!!!! Nintendo is so gonna drop out of the console race because even though they're making profits and the other Big 3 members aren't, they aren't making FPS games and 1 billion dollar 6 hour motion movies with interactive sequences that can be considered a failure even if it sells 3 million in less than a month!

Right guys? Nintendo's going down, right guys? Right?

...right?

It's good to see some black ink, after tumultuous market conditions. Also, hopefully they will be more humble when they release the PS4.

Sony - YLOD -really? now I need to replace my PS3. Is that built in obsolescence or what? I guess I'll do my part to help Sony make a profit :-(

One advice Sony - price them right, and stop using proprietary storage for the handhelds !!!

and then you shall see a surge in sales of both hardware and software....

PS3 sales falling.. that was expected. It has been 7 years since the console launched. It was going to eventually fall, same with the PSP.

The Vita on the other hand. Great handheld but needs some quality games. Kudos to Sony for Soul Sacrifice, but it needs more Vita games. Although, I do enjoy playing some of the older PS1 classics and PSP games that I missed out on.

Once the PS4 is released, Sony will start to hopefully turn around as a whole.

I personally love my Vita but I understand that not everyone looks at it an thinks it's worth the price. I know there are plenty of Wii U owners that believe the same thing. What I do find interesting is that even though there aren't a ton of games they still are not all reviewed by GS. For instance, Ragnarok Odyssey came out in October but it still hasn't been reviewed by GS. I wonder if the Wii U has this issue as well.

People bash Nintendo, but where are Vita's games? My friend bought it and he has like 3 games.

I guess Sony really isn't that serious about investing more time and money in Vita if they're forecasting 2 million fewer units from the already paltry number sold in the past year.  I doubt we'll see any more games for Vita beyond this year from Sony or third-parties other than indie games.

Give the Vita some games!! Damn you Sony!  It's pretty reasonably priced (hate the memory cards though) and a sweet piece of hardware...but Persona 4 and Gravity Rush can only tide me over so long.

I did noticed some sales and some price drops for PS3 games, which means I'm going to buy a handfull of game next month. Do that's your secret to my pocket, Sony, low prices. The gamepads are still expensive though and I really need one.

ever consider the game sector is failing cause the games suck?

@obsequies

the fact that the PS4 doesnt support PS3 compatibility means that its the perfect time to get a PS3. what used to be $600 just to get a 60GB PS3, you can now pay $300 to get one of almost 10 times that storage with games included.

Branden_Lucero

@DiamondDM13

just because you dont find any value paying for Gold doesnt mean that others dont, or are wrong for doing so. i'm the kind of person who will pay for a CD or a Vinyl over an MP3 any day because i find them more valuable than digital content, even if they are more expensive.

But yeah, I get your point, those comments constantly keep coming up.

@Sefrix and when games do get reviewed for it most of the time if not all the time they get a lower score than what they deserves

theKSMM
theKSMM

@Sefrix The Vita is a great piece of kit, undoubtedly the best portable gaming experience I've ever had.  Unfortunately, most gamers seems like they want console-quality gaming at smartphone app prices, and those two just don't go together.

Slim02

@Reuwsaat Your friend taste in games must suck then.. Because I own 15 vita's games and that not even counting the PS Plus games...

Talavaj

@Branden_Lucero @obsequies That is wrong, PS4 can't play the actual CDs/DVDs from PS1, PS2 or PS3 but you still will be able to stream them from a cloud gaming server after you purchase them from PSN. But if you buy any ps3 games now you probably won't be able to play them on the ps4 in the future.

If you consider the above the drop in ps3 sales is understandable.

DiamondDM13
DiamondDM13

@Branden_Lucero @DiamondDM13 That's not really a good comparison. I don't buy MP3, I am CD all the way. I also buy games in disc if possible, not in digital. But that doesn't detract from the fact that people play 50$ for nothing. Just to play online, which should be free. You already pay 300$ for a console and 60$ for a game, and another 50$ to play online?

Tell me where does that make sense? I'm paying 50$ for a rental service that includes lots of great games. And I have the addiction of getting those games all the time, not needing to return them...

Also, I play online for free, both on my PC and my PS3...

chipwithdip

@shadowboy88 @CWEBB04z I learned something: This is possible unless it's Nintendo. Then it's "omg they're so dead" even when they're making profits.

Sefrix

@shadowhunter0 I'm not going to argue that as it's a personal opinion, but they are certainly reviewed by the non-core review team here at GS.

Reuwsaat

@Slim02 @Reuwsaat Buying a console just for 15 games it's still bad business for me, and PS Plus games aren't quite amazing an offer either imo

TigusVidiks
TigusVidiks

@Talavajyeah, but that involves buying the same games again. What he's talking is about buying a PS3 cheaper, to keep using your colection, since you won't be able to use your ALREADY OWNED PS3 games in the PS4.

Slim02
Slim02

@Reuwsaat @Slim02 Who said I was finish buying games for the Vita.. There are still games I do not own that I want to get. So that number is going up..
