Sony ends PSP Digital Comics updates

Game giant releases final update of four-color fiction for portable, shifting efforts to "bringing the comic service to other Sony devices."

Sony has offered gamers new comics to read every week since the PSP Digital Comics store launched in 2009, but that practice is no longer "to be continued."

The book has closed on PSP Digital Comics.

Sony has announced via the PlayStation Blog that this week's PSP Digital Comics update will be the very last. According to Sony, the Digital Comics team will now shift its focus to "bringing the comic service to other Sony devices," presumably the forthcoming PlayStation Vita.

Although weekly updates to the PSP Digital Comics store are ceasing, the store itself--which boasts over 4,000 titles--remains open for business. The final batch of new titles added to the store this week include Batman Beyond Vol. 2 #16, Doctor Who: A Fairytale Life #2, Star Trek: Volume 1 #0, Quarantined #1, and more.

I'm not a big comic reader, but I think the digital comics on the PSP are a really neat concept and a great way to read comics. Hopefully Sony has plans to keep this alive after a short break. I am sure there are enough comic fans out there who care enough for it. Maybe they are making it so the store comes as part of the PS Suite on Android devices as well as the Vita and PS3/4?

I'd say I'll miss this feature but I live in Canada where we always get the shaft so I got the digital comic reader as an update a few years ago, but no comics were ever available on the ps store. Guess now they never will be. Thanks Sony.

I was never a fan of this feature, but I don't think it's necessary to drop new comics on the PSP. If they really want to keep the PSP alive a little longer, they can't stop supporting features they've been promoting.

Nintendo should do the comic or book feature more on their hand held its a great things for the novel/comic/book industry.

The Comic reader is a really cool feature and companies should use it more to promote, games and movie. Coolyfett loves how the reader works and is very interested to see what new features the PSV will have for digital comics. Will the 3DS have 3D comics coming soon??

Well since the PSP is outdated and will probably be dropped within a couple of years, I can understand why they did it, and I am very glad that they are keeping the service itself active for a while longer. I definitely want comics on my PS3 and big screen.

Wait . . . there was digital comics on the PSP? I did not know that, oh well. I still prefer the paper format over digital any day.

Well, sad as it may be to see it end in this format, it's good to know that they haven't/won't give up on the concept--but rather just prepping to step it up to a other devices (presumably PSV & maybe those Sony tablets that are suppose to be coming out as well). I'm w/ you, vadicta, I'd love to see them expand more publisher support as well as really make it a unique experience on the PSV. But to take it one step further, I actually hope they consider finally making it possible to read comics on our PS3s as well. Now THAT'S, imo, a 'Sony device' that's needed this feature for a while & s I sure hope it makes it there. :)

They should really push this more with other devices and get better publisher support. Being able to use my (upcoming :)) Vita as a comic reader would seal the deal so fast that I would explode.

@monson21502 it all still exists, they just aren't updating for the PSP anymore. I assume they will be focusing on higher resolution releases for the VITA launch. Perhaps you should do a bit more reading rather than just the title.

I enjoyed it and read many comics. But, I guess makes sense to switch focus to Vita.

I completely forgot the PSP had digital comics because they weren't available in Canada. And, my PSP rarely if ever gets turned on anymore. Oh, well it sucks for those people who used this service.

This was a complete failed attempt to market a digital e-reader to gamers. Personally I love collecting comcis. I would not like them to be in this format. And definitely PSP was the wrong way to go about for digi-comics. Chalk this up to another Sony blunder. I am hoping that Sony actually LEARNS from the mistakes of its PSP ancestors and not let the Vita walk down that same path.
