Sony details free PlayStation App with remote download support

Shuhei Yoshida discusses the features of the PlayStation App, which will launch alongside the PS4.

by

The upcoming PlayStation App will be free on iOS and Android, Sony has said, and will allow users to purchase games and have them automatically begin downloading on their PlayStation 4.

In an interview on the European PlayStation Blog, Sony worldwide studios head Shuhei Yoshida discussed the new PlayStation App, which Sony unveiled during TGS 2013.

The PlayStation App allows users to log in to their PlayStation Network account and make use of the console's social features, such as viewing game streams, sending voice and text messages, and receiving invitations to multiplayer games.

It can also be used for second screen gaming, Sony has said, with Knack, Driveclub, and Watch Dogs all supporting the app this year.

"Smaller developers can use PlayStation App to connect to PS4 and load an application," added Yoshida, "like drawing software for example, so that you don't have to download and install a specific app on your smartphone. It's open to all PS4 developers to use."

The PlayStation 4 is launching on November 15 in North America for $399, and on November 29 in Europe for €399/£349.

I would be happy just to have an app that I can use to add friends while I'm out and about.  Having folks trying to remember their usernames and write them on scraps of paper is awkward.

This is concrete proof and irrefutable evidence of Sony's Playstation 4 superiority over the Xbox One, Playstation 4 will once again emerge as a victor of the next generation of gaming, completing a 4 generation streak, Sony has endured as a brand and as a revolutionary company that will prevail for ages

Windows phones get screwed again. Guess it's my own fault for being a windows phone though...

It would be nice if there was a dedicated PS3 app as well.

Anyone know if the PS4 APP will be available on PC?

People say this is going to be pointless, but with how big game sizes are going to be now, ex. KZ SF 50 gigs and Watch Dogs 20 gigs(pc version, but still probably this or close to it), being able to download something I see on sale when I'm at school or work will be cool so it's ready right when I'm home.  Also being able to see the game invites and just messaging a buddy back saying you'll be on in 5 or so is cool too.  Just more convenient to have that on your phone now.  I know texting works for rl friends, but some people make online friends too and this is a cool way of messaging them in a texting manner to play.

Did a 7 year old programmer develop the app?  Oh yeah and PS fans, Xbox already has SmartGlass, so nothing new or revolutionary here.

I hope no one gets killed for these systems. I don't care what system you like, it's not worth killing an innocent soul for. Like that poor guy that got robbed of his GTA game, away from the store he bought it in (must've had the limited edition) I don't know why people don't remember to bring cab fare with them, & call for one outside the store! I know that sounds a little weird, but it's frustrating hearing people get killed for these systems, when they didn't have too! I think I'm getting nervous for everyone's safety ha-ha.. But seriously, It would be REALLY NICE if popular systems, can be sold without killing people. I'd like to think we've become more civilized..NOT WORSE! Just because you're in a long line with people, doesn't mean you can trust them. And I find that VERY sad. Glad I ordered my system online. *SIGH* Anyway...

I hope Sony puts a lot of effort on this app's safety. It's a no brainer that someone will try to mod the app to allow for game downloads without paying for them. And that would suck.

What about for the Windows Store? People with the Windows phone are left out of the picture (and that Sony laptops run Windows - it's just that they have to use some sort of application in order to run Android).

This is why competition is good.  Sony and Microsoft have BOTH come up with good ideas, and the other studies the ideas and implements their own.

This close competition is just making it better for us as gamers, no matter which we choose.  I choose both.

@SurfaceNerd That some of the most impressive fanboyism that I've seen in a while for any company not named "Apple."  Well done.

@Sumpskildpadde They will probably have a web browser version as well.  It may not have all the same features, but I think they would at least want people with any device to be able to use their web browser to buy and remotely install games.

Windows phone here as well.  Also getting a Surface 2 when it comes out.  It does suck when things like this APP dont pan out.  But the surface 2 tablet is going to be sick.

ur fanboy colors is showing, everybody have a smartphone but not everybody would have a smart glass and the feature is impressive from a gamer point of view, if u don't like it well this is not the right article for u, the xbone have lots of article for u to read

@greenaj Why? The app looks nice. It's a MUST to be able to type messages from the app to text your friends in-game, and vise versa. Just think. If you are at home reading a book or wathever, and a friend send you a game invite, you'll see it directly on your phone so you can simply turn on the console and play, WAY better. Still, I agree for second screen gaming, it's pointless to me. But the app is way more than that.

@greenaj Considering I've never been able to use my phone as a secondary screen for my Xbox 360, this is new and revolutionary actually.

@Faye_Tallity The cops will be at my local GameStop here in Tampa AND at Wal-Mart too for the midnight release of the PS4 on the night of Nov. 14th and until a lil' bit after 1am on Nov. 15th (I'm guessing like 11pm-1am or so will be the midnight release times for peeps to show up and pick up their consoles/games/etc.).  But yeah, my buddy in lives in NY and says that they had a lot of problems like this in the city when the PS3 was released... ;-)

@StonerDemon I'm sure Sony has a huge focus on security after the PSN was taken down because of hackers in the past. This app will have links to the ps store also so it will need to be very secure.

@PixelAddict Yes and no. It's cool for functions and features, but it's lame for battle of the exclusives. Now you HAVE to buy two consoles to play any games... Pretty sad since they use the same architecture. I don't have infinite money, so I won't buy both, so I'll miss some gems from one or another, it's pretty sad to me. I prefer no competition (or almost) so there is only one console, all of your friends play on it, and all games are on it. I don't care about features that much, I prefer getting all the games on the same system (even if it means it doesn't do anything else than gaming).

@PixelAddict replace Microsoft with Valve and I think it would work better.

Next Gen Valve, Nintendo, Sony and smart phones/tablets.  Competition for the new age.

- Valve the all in one steam box.  (hope all PC games get moved to Linux with help from the Linux community.)

- Nintendo the low cost (drop the price) console with innovative fun games.

-Sony the high end console (for those who like the console system). Huge first party games new exciting titles.

-Smart phones/tablets - cheap ,small, quick, fun and educational games. Indie platform for those just starting in the business. The old garage type developer platform

@PixelAddict

Majority of people choose Sony.

Unlike the aftermath of the PS2. Sony won't falter like they did with the PS3.

Sony will take a lead and keep it.

@xhawk27 @Sumpskildpadde na,

Smartphones  -  Android, Sony custom Android, Firefox, custom Steam OS (amazon fire OS)

Tablets  -  Android, Linux Ubuntu, chrome, and Steam OS Firefox.

Same with PC's  -  Linux, Ubuntu, and steam OS.(full) Chrome OS.

@senjutsu I think the app looks childish.  But I can already see messages and who's online with my smartglass app on my cell phone.  I can also send them messages from my phone to their game console.

@Comatose71690 MS already announced SmartGlass will do the same thing for the One, Sony's just catching up in that regard.  Yay.  Besides, second screen gaming is dumb and has been ever since the Dreamcast.

Vodoo

@Ravenlore_basic Too bad Microsoft is the innovative one. Even Valve is biting off Microsofts' ideas about sharing & trading digital games.

PixelAddict
PixelAddict

@Ravenlore_basic I suppose so, but I still feel it is important to have two "serious" consoles in high competition.  It's good for innovation, price, and value.

Let's say Microsoft decided to opt out of the NEXT gen.  "Sorry guys, no Xbox Two.  We're sticking with the One for another 10 years while we print money selling even more Windows and Office.  Lates!"

Why do I have a funny feeling the PS5 would be $999?

Competition is good.  Competition at the core level for gaming is good for me.

PixelAddict

@Queuingreturns  How did I know a comment about competition being good for all of us would incite some fanboy to make bold claims based on his personal hopes and dreams?

Oh, because this is Gamespot.  It's what happens here.

Cyberjin

@mike040 @Cyberjin

most functions can be used in browsers already.
I don't you think they will update it later?

I don't see the point of an App for PC

Comatose71690
Comatose71690

@greenaj @Comatose71690 Well if both haven't actually implemented it into use then nobody is catching anyone. All I remember MS saying is that the smarglass will be able to pull up tips and tricks for stuck gamers and maps for certain games, no specifics on actual game controller use has been shown. But I agree, it will probably end up being useless on both consoles for most gamers.

PixelAddict
PixelAddict

@Vodoo  I agree with you about the differences between XBL vs PSN.  Live is just smoother, more intuitive... better.

But I am not sure PSN will improve just because we're paying for it.  Possibly, but I'm not banking on it.  Because while Microsoft is a software-first company, and has made it's billions on software and improving user interface, Sony has not.  Sony is a hardware-first company.

Vodoo
Vodoo

@Ravenlore_basic @PixelAddict You make it sound like Microsoft is just taking money without providing a service for it. XBL is the best unified online platform. Sony is charging for online for the PS4 also. They have to charge money in order to provide the level of quality they offer. I own both the 360 & ps3. Sony's PSN always had a cheap, unintuitive, disorganized feel to it compared to XBL. Hopefully this will change now that Sony is charging also.

greenaj

@Ravenlore_basic There are PLENTY of people who will buy an Xbox One, and you should be happy about it because like PixelAddict said, competition drives the market and innovates.

Ravenlore_basic
Ravenlore_basic

@PixelAddict @Ravenlore_basic I just do not think so at this point. Yes in the past because Sega left, and Nintendo was doing their own thing. but what else.. PC...

NOW things have changed. Smart phones, tablets, have changed the playing field. Who knows Apple may come out with a games console, or add gaming to its Macs. (though would not like apple in for same reason)

what I am saying is that now more than before there is a lot of competition.

GFWL, Live (price, ads, commercials) , windows 8 App store. Microsoft has tried to extract as much money from its customers as possible, MORE than a fair and reasonable amount to me.

I do hope another company steps up to compete with Sony, but one that will not try to rape its customers.

Ravenlore_basic

*Cocky smirk*.

Sony have the upper hand my friend.

This isn't fanboyism. This is the truth.

Microsoft will learn the greatness of Sony next gen.

Heck, they've learnt that this gen. That's why they gave props to Sony for "The Last Of Us". ; )
