Sony bringing updated 3D headset to TGS

Publisher reveals reworked version of HMZ 3D headset with front-facing camera; poised for debut at this month's Tokyo Game Show.

by

Sony will showcase a new 3D virtual reality headset during this month's Tokyo Game Show, according to a new video from the company's official YouTube account.

Is this the future?

The video (below) highlights an updated version of the HMZ 3D headset Sony launched last year. The device shown includes a front-facing camera, a feature that was not included with previous iterations of the technology.

Head-mounted displays have been a popular trend in the industry lately. The Kickstarter campaign for the Oculus Rift, which drew the support of Valve's Gabe Newell and Epic Games' Cliff Bleszinski, was successful on its first day.

Okay, anyone else wondering why they show shots of someone fixing it with a screwdriver?

I wholeheartedly support this trend, but no comment on this specific device until I see it in practical use.

Sony really pushing this 3D stuff huh... I got love for Sony but they gotta come up with something better than this or keep their focus more on the next gen console.. Just my opinion

Someone will eventually make good VR, and it will become the next big thing. Just not anytime soon I reckon.

I'm not getting it due mostly to the fact that unlike the original concept design, this headset does not make the wearer look or feel like Cyclops from the X-Men series.

Looks like something out of Splinter Cell.

hmmm if this headset displays everything at close proximity then it will cause a lot of eye damage. Book worms and nerds generally wear glasses because their natural eye seeing distance (usually about 20yards) would be accommodated for a closer distance.

This technology can cause a lot of health problems to future generations if it isn't properly developed for the human eye.

a 360 degree head tracking would make gt5 awesome along with my driving wheel and play seat. but unfortunately I'm stereoscopic blind so I'm likely to pass.

these VR googles has been around since the 1990s

It's like the electric car, forever just a gimmick

I have the first version of this and it is pretty awesome it is like having a theater size 3d tv the only problem I have with are the headphones but this will allow you use any headphone you want or the ones that comes with it if I do get this one I would probably use the new PS3 headset along with it because of the mic for online play

if it works it ll be the obvious step. Multiple wireless adaptations will follow to provide a deeper experience. It doesn't work too well on the vita (a different platform and concept, augmented though).

If this technology become the mainstream of consumer gaming, it will mark a turning point in history of video game. Players could be stunned by its innovative gaming experience.

This could mark the milestone for virtual reality prototype, However, I believe it will take a few decades to complete the ultimate immersing virtual reality experience for consumer product without headset.

This is something I will buy in the future, better than 3D television from what I have heard even better than cinema.

This is precisely why Sony has made a loss the last 5 years.

Wow, I guess Sony is still pursuing this ever since they released the Sony Glassatrons almost 2 decades ago. I hope that it goes over well this time.

Get a 3d tv which 720 and ps4 will support. Get a 4k TV which only ps4 will support. Get a HDZ display which only one person can use, gives the best 3d experience even more so than IMAX, but may be too heavy for long gaming sessions. Which to upgrade too. Need a new something within a year.

I want something like this to work so badly but I also want it to have a motion sensor so that I can move my head to look around in the game world. It would be so much more immersive that way. Hopefully they will perfect this technology and have a very clear image with 3D that doesn't cause headaches. For me this is the next big evolution in gaming. True visual immersion in the game world.

I suppose VR is the next step for gaming after the next console generation runs its course.

Lord knows that there isn't going to be much room left for upgrades to the visual quality in games and advances will have to be made in other ways.

Although feels like a fool for buying the HMZ-T1, but someone has to be the early adopters so that Sony could keep listening to feedbacks and improve their products.

I've been keeping some money aside waiting for the right time to get a 3DTV or 3D projector, but the time doesn't seem right yet for me. I hope this is where gaming is going instead because these headsets will be way cheaper and likely much better.

I'm interested to see how this helps with game immersion especially with RPGs. Actually this technology could potentially have some crazy potential. Imagine years from now you could actually play games just though lenses like these without a TV. You wouldn't have to buy a huge TV you'd have it all in front of your eyes.

All it makes me think of, the future of MMOs. It looks like something out of the .hack universe, so we could have a virtual reality MMO.

Has anyone hating on this even tried it out? I've had the chance to experience using this at an exclusive Sony event and it was mind-blowing. There is no need to buy a 3k 3D TV if you have this hooked up with your PS3. For me personally, the glasses plus television combo doesn't work, but this makes that simpler and much more realistic - it makes you feel you are right in the game or concert (I was being shown a music video). Just as soon as this becomes wireless, I'll be placing my order disregarding the price.

@keyb0red Electric car...forever a gimmick? You'll likely be driving one in 20 years.

TommyBarban

If you have tried it, what is it like hooking it up to the PS3?

shadowhunter0

@TommyBarban it actually like having your own movie theater but with much better 3d well at least that is how the first one works

shadowhunter0
shadowhunter0

@firstclassgamer the first version only cost $800 and I think it is worth it since it seems like your are getting a theater size 3d screen ( yes I know it only two .7" oled screens but the way they work it seems to be theater size

and the 3d on them is the best 3d that I have ever seen

shadowhunter0
shadowhunter0

@inaka_rob the first version ways more then this version and it is under a pound and I have used it for long periods at a time with no discomfort but be warned you will be spending some time adjusting it took me like 30mins to get it just right for me

@jorge69696 Isn't that like saying every gamer maker since ever stole the idea of games from pong??

People will have similar ideas, it's just a fact of life. Like wii/PSmove/kinect

shadowhunter0
shadowhunter0

@Dasim64 since you uses 2 screen it doesn't and actually it is the best 3d that I have ever seen

Halloll

@Mohjong did you try it with gt5? does it support head tracking?

shadowhunter0
shadowhunter0

@Chaos_Dante_456 the one they have out now you don't need a tv to play games or watch movies it is like having your own personal movie theater I use it all the time to play games and watch movies on my ps3 both in 2d and 3d

shadowhunter0
shadowhunter0

@alchie11 I have bought the first version of it and it is awesome and well worth the 800 bucks I was planning on buying a 3d tv until I saw it

Chaos_Dante_456
Chaos_Dante_456

@alchie11 so you're saying it works even without a 3DTV? If so that sounds great. I must admit my interest is peaked

alchie11
alchie11

@Chaos_Dante_456 Yes. You connect it directly to the PS3 via a wired connection. What you see through it is in 3D, thus this thing replaces your 3D television and the glasses. It's a great product for people that don't have the budget or space for a 3D television, but want to be able to sit in almost any position and enjoy 3D games.

@TommyBarban  I have an even older version called the Sony Glasstron. It came out in 1997 and used S-Video and A/V. The resolution was horrible but it was unique for it's time. At the time they were $700 but now you can score a set on Ebay for around $100. These newer ones however look like that they offer more than just being a TV monitor (like the old ones).

TommyBarban

I meant the old one, thanks for the link!

shadowhunter0

@alchie11  @Chaos_Dante_456 exactly it hooks up to your ps3 through hdmi port also if you don't want to use it you don't have to unplug it since it has pass through and the 3d is the best that I have seen well the first version anyways which is more like having a movie theater size screen for only $800 but you are the only one who can see it
