Sony announces new version of PlayStation Vita hardware

New model available in six colours; 20 percent thinner, 15 percent lighter, larger battery, includes built-in memory card.

Sony has announced plans to release a new revision of its PlayStation Vita hardware to the Japanese market next month, as part of its pre-Tokyo Game Show press conference.

The new model will reportedly be 20 percent thinner and 15 percent lighter, will include 1GB of built-in memory, and will provide an additional hour of battery life--for a total run time of six hours of use. The new model appears to abandon the previous model's OLED screen in favour of a 5-inch LCD.

The new model (PCH-2000) will be available in six colours: pink, white, brown, light blue, black, and yellow. Sony also announced plans to drop its proprietary PS Vita charger, moving to a more common micro-USB type. The company also announced that it would be reducing the costs of the entire range of its PS Vita Memory Cards, as well as introducing a larger-capacity 64GB model for 9,980 yen.

The new PlayStation Vita will be available from October 10 for 19,929 yen, including tax. No Western release dates were confirmed.

The PSP has always been held back one thing and one thing only: Sony. They created an amazing handheld, the most powerful handheld on the market right now with several different features and the like.

And yet, they're not selling like they should because there's no support. There are homebrew websites that provide more software support for the PSP than Sony has, ever. That is pitiful.

what are you gonna do with this puny 1 GB? It's not enough for even a single game like Uncharted 3

But...I like my OLED display. The other features sound nice though. Whatever will I do with this conflict of interest?

Really dislike the OLED to LCD decision.  It'll be cheaper for sure, but man that screen looks so much nicer.

Why can't Sony just follow Nintendo's lead and drop the  proprietary memory cards?  Oh wait they can't, so leave it up to some hacker to create an adapter that will enable the use of standard memory cards.  Of course the sheep will eat this up as as some kind of change.  Ever since the PS3 Sony has been doing everything to nickel and the dime the consumer and control/monitor the user to prevent them from modding their hardware or to prevent piracy.

interested to see the new screen... hopefully the downgrade from LED to LCD wont affect image quality

So it is available in 6 colors.... 4 of which are pink, yellow, light blue, and brown..... Why not red, blue, or any other standard color?

I am happy they are bringing a 64GB card. I am running out of room on my 32GB.

I think the vita current version its so much cool than the new one

This new vita will be good for kids as they don't care for OLED, I think I'll buy two if they looked nice, not like the ugly 2ds.

I hope Sony won't sell this crappy version in the Western Market. LCD Screens are worst than OLED Screens. I am happier with the current version of Vita, the vita just needs the big franchises aka Gran Turismo, GTA, God of War to sell the system.

LCD instead of OLED? No thanks, I'm keeping my current Vita.

So Sony is going to produce both versions? Just lower the price of the current Vita. Flood the market with different PSP models and increase production cost, GENIUS!!!

Sony coming out with a newer model that's worse than previous version?  Business as usual in the land of Sony.

alright sorry for the lack of response as my phone does not allow me to read comment replies. not so much riding the hate train just an avid gamer who has loved sony for quite some time but feel they have lacked quite a bit in original games for the vita, am glad to hear they are working on more but have not heard of anything to catch my attention. if they announce something along the lines of dissidia 3 then i sold instantly. lol

IT's supposed to be the economic alternative to PS Vita, Just the 2DS being the cheaper 3DS (exept this vita is not made for kids)

Why slighty update a system that isn't even selling? The hardware is not the problem, its software. Sony still doesn't get it.  The best part is that the OG model will go down in price.

Really, I would have loved to see smart phone quality ppi and resolution in the vita. That would certainly be something to get excited about.

Also, with the Vita Tv, what resolution will Vita games display at? It may be that keeping the resolution at 540p will allow the vita hardware to pull off some pretty high graphical stunts that wouldn't be possible at higher resolutions. With the PSP, the visual quality deteriorated drastically when it was blown up on a 32 inch TV; true, it didn't cover the entire screen, but the considerable decrease in ppi led to worse visuals.

I think we should wait before deciding that OLED to LCD is a step down for the Vita.

First off, there are multiple kinds of OLED and LCD technologies. For example, Samsung uses "AMOLED" in its galaxy series whereas HTC uses "Super LCD 2" in many of their phones, e.g. HTC One X.

In comparing these two phones, it is true that the AMOLED display has deeper blacks, but the Super LCD 2 display of the HTC One X is brighter and slightly clearer. Also, this may seem to contradict conventional wisdom, but the Super LCD 2 display has better viewing angles than the AMOLED one.

Another thing to consider is that LCD tech has been around for a while and has developed pretty far as a result.

Having said that, we should wait to see what variation of LCD tech Sony decides to adopt for the new iteration of the Vita. Until then, let's withhold judgement.

hey sony, why don't you push some more fucking games out BEFORE showering us with pretty plastic flavored versions of the thing...

PS+ twisted my right arm into getting one cause they keep on providing us with games.

Whenever I see things like this the first thing I think is why in the hell didn't you do this in the first place? There are so many examples it's not even funny.

How is the Vita 3 years old ? Prat !! ..... I guess the Vita: cheap and nasty edition was over due, Sony have done it to all their consoles.

there are some good fun games but not fantastic games on the vita...most of them are just watered down rehashes of conosle games/series...I have one and love it and I'm saying this...now i'm wondering why I bothered to buy one in the first place if i knew they would just make a slimmer cheaper worse quality one down the line?...

i already have 2 psvitas , i dont think i need another , just for a measly extra hour battery life, and a downgraded lcd screen ,and 1 gig of memory i got 12 -a 4 gig card and a 8 gig card im not going to downgrade plus 3ds comes with 2 or 4 gig depending on model so why only 1 gig sony , youd think theyd learn their lesson

@pshaw520 Those are the Japanese colors; they may sell well in Japan. Who knows what they will bring to America.

@pshaw520 Pink Yellow and Blue? For PSP Vita Easter Edition?

@somatzu

I wasn't aware of Super LCD 2's existence. I pretty much have shunned LCD tech since I noticed how poorly it fared.

With that said, you have piqued my interest in it. I just can't see it being comparable to any sort of OLED tech, especially AMOLED.

@Gaz Taylor It came out in Feb 2012 here in the US.  That's only 1.5 years.

@csward @Tremblay343 sure is. i had the original 1001 psp and i brought the 3000 series, and it feels like 10 times cheaper. the screen looks awful and it'd probably be the same with the vita.

YesSheWill

@csward @thisBlueDude I had a PSP and the main issue was software support.  So of course I opted out of purchasing a Vita due to the probability of it following the same course.  And it seems like that was a wise decision.

Talldude80
Talldude80

@csward @thisBlueDude they have a horrible COD game too..... if the COD game had been a hit, the PSvita would be doing better, but still a lack of games, and a lack of GOOD games....
