Sony announces £1,300 HMZ-T3 3D headset

HMZ-T3 can be used for watching movies and gaming, and can be connected to a mobile device.

Sony has announced its third head-mounted 3D display, the HMZ-T3 personal viewer headset.

The £1,300 device (approximately $2,027) is a successor to the £1,000 HMZ-T2 and contains two 720p OLED displays that can accept a wireless HD connection, though this drops the headset's battery life from seven hours to three hours. The headset features virtual 7.1 surround sound and weighs 320g, Sony says.

The device can be used for gaming with a Windows PC or PlayStation 3, like its predecessor the HMZ-T2, but is not a dedicated gaming VR headset like the Oculus Rift.

The HMZ-T3 can also be connected to a mobile device for portable use.

An earlier Eurogamer report this week said Sony is developing its own gaming VR headset, however, which the company will debut to the public in 2014

The HMZ-T3 will begin shipping in 2 to 3 weeks, Sony adds.

Tried HMZ-T2 at store and it's cheap, plasticky, low res, piece of crap! I doubt that this one will be any different.

Sounds awesome, but the Rift is only about 300?

Not competitive.

The idea is good but until it becomes affordable it isn't going to take off.

$2,027 ?

This is already a failure...

Think back at how expensive the first flatscreen TV´s were... Technology evolved and made them affordable to even the poorest layer of consumers.. I can definitely see that happening to VR headsets..

Kinda like holding a dog while going up the escalator and the dog starts moving it's feet like it is walking in the air. That is VR for you.

@MidNightStrikes they will be giving them away in a few months when they are trying to keep up with the xbox  one :P

@monson21502 @MidNightStrikes hahaha xbox one is trying to keep up with PS4 and im sure its going to remain that way. I mean the PS4 has better hardware, lower price, and countless other pros, versus xbox ones long list of cons.

Stop this stupid crap Sony and sell your stuff for the same as Samsung. All you are doing is losing money then you got to dip into the PS4 fund to pay off your stupid Electronics department. Don't try to compete with Occulus cause that's going to end bad, not because they can't but VR is FAD like 3D.

tinigon89

This one can connect to any device, function like 3DTV with 750" screen and it's not VR for PS4 so please don't compare it with the Rift which only use on PC.

plaintomato

@tinigon89 We can at least compare the target price for a good laugh.

I bought a Vuzix VR920 years ago. I remember thinking it was interesting, a nice novelty, but ultimately unsatisfying and not worth the $500 I paid for it. I returned it unimpressed.

If I imagine nicely increased virtual screen size and resolution, I still have to laugh at the $2k price point. Kind of makes the talk of a competitive Sony VR headset seem laughable.

tinigon89
tinigon89

@plaintomato @tinigon89 yes, i agree. Because it's same as HMZ-T2 with Wireless Connection and 7.1 surround sound and can connect to mobile device. But the price is double if compare with HMZ-T2

Rift is setting the bar higher, for less money. Obviously this is marketed to be a high-end home theater replacement, somewhat of a novelty device, but Sony is going to need a much lower price and more features (namely head tracking) to compete with the Rift with their upcoming PS4 headset.

PS4Lives

What do they mean by not dedicated for gaming? 3D Google Maps . The apps is already there on Wii U screen .you just need to use your hand other than moving you head

Zloth2

@PS4Lives I'm guessing "not dedicated for gaming" means Computer Aided Design applications like AutoCAD.

rarson
rarson

@Zloth2

"Not dedicated for gaming" means it's marketed as a personal viewing device, for movies and such. It doesn't have gaming features like head tracking.

Dasim64
Dasim64

It's definitely over priced for what it is. You can't even turn your head to look around while gaming with it. What happens to the price when they add that feature? Just over 2 grand for this really seems excessive considering it's just two 720p screens and a battery. Although it has wireless HDMI and surround sound, two things I would live without, I still don't see why it costs so much. I certainly wouldn't spend that much even if it allowed me to look around in games. I certainly hope they manage to trim the price on their gaming model.

So, is this supposed to be Sony's gaming VR headset or not?  Confused?  Are they debuting something else in 2014?  If this is their VR headset to go against Oculus Rift, then I am not impressed.  Was hoping for something better.  This just looks like an upgrade.  Reviews I read on HMZ-T2 said it was very uncomfortable to wear, heavy and hurt your head.  This design doesn't look like they made any improvements in that area.  Also, the price is a killer for this headset.  I've heard Rift is supposed to go for around $300, and this is trying to compete at over $2,000?  Doesn't make sense.

mustafa1992
mustafa1992

@skeet1964 This is not the sony gaming VR headset they announced earlier, that one is still in development.  I imagine that the gaming one will be similar to the rift ,technology and price wise.

Zloth2

@skeet1964 Is there something about "not a dedicated gaming VR headset" which confuses you?

@hardeddie

This is the same exact thing as the T2, just wireless. There's basically no reason to buy this with the Rift and Sony's own PS4 headset in the pipeline. This one is going to suck for gaming.

Vixenar

@hardeddie I don't think so. Usually the more someone boasts about themselves and flexes their ego, less likely it is to be true at all.

Hey peoples that are bitching for various reasons. A few points for you. This is not the rumored Ps4 VR headset. It's expensive because its a niche product meant to emulate a large theater experience. There's a small market for things like this. Sony isn't the only one putting stuff like this out there. Really this article shouldn't have even been put up, as gaming is not what this product was made in mind for.

x-2tha-z

Have Sony gone mad? At that price, they'll be lucky to sell a few hundred.

CaveManCobb
CaveManCobb

@x-2tha-z PS3 was 600 dollars when it launched. They have a tendency to over price things.
