What we heard: It's no secret that Sonic the Hedgehog has been a bit off from his heydays of running the 40-meter dash in .7 seconds flat. Recent years have seen the blue streak headline in sequels or one-off installments that for one reason or another fail to live up to Sonic's side-scrolling adventures on the Genesis. However, even though its little blue mascot is down, Sega hasn't shown any signs of counting him out. Not content with just breaking bread with former archrival Nintendo with Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Sega commissioned preeminent role-playing game aficionados BioWare to create a Sonic-themed RPG for the Nintendo DS.

With Sonic once again rising to prominence, Sega's Team Sonic may be readying its iconic hedgehog for a comeback tour. Following a trademark filing for Sonic Unleashed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, forumites who frequent ESPIOKaos discovered a plethora of screenshots on Sega's press site, which were subsequently plastered all over myriad sites before Sega realized its gaffe. The leaked screenshots quickly found company with a video containing what appears to be in-game footage taken from the actual game. In it, Sonic appears to be running on rails through a variety of colorful 3D environments.

And then the Internet happened. Sega enthusiasts The Sonic Stadium kicked off the rumor mongering, saying "Sonic Unleashed will be the next Sonic 'canon' game, if you will, intending to follow on from Sonic 06's Iblis disaster (in more ways than one), hence the weird unimaginitive [sic] dark creature git in the screenshots this morning. You see Super Sonic attempting to stop Eggman once more, but a new trick up his sleeve results in Sonic having to deal with a rather unnatural curse. A werewolf. Sonic has to fight a werewolf alter-ego of himself." The Sonic Stadium also said that a brand-new face will be added to the franchise's roster.

The Sonic Stadium then passed off the rumor torch to German Web site Sega On. There, a mysterious Sega employee known only as "Dennis" apparently "confirmed" that Sonic Unleashed would see a multiplatform release on, at least, the Xbox 360 and Wii. Game On then extrapolated on this info thanks to an inside source, saying that Sega would make its big reveal during a Gamers' Day in May, and the game would be added to the holiday free-for-all this November. According to Game On's sources, "SEGA is launching SONIC UNLEASHED with A HUGE production budget." The site noted that development teams from Japan, the US, and Europe will be assisting Team Sonic with the allegedly massive undertaking.

Although a lot of information is floating around about the project, it is important to note that absolutely none of it--save for the screenshots pulled from its press site--are from Sega. All other information is attributed to nebulous "sources" or lack attribution outright. Some information, such as Sega Unleashed having some kind of "werewolf" mechanic, appears to ring true based solely off of the released images, but the game remains unannounced and therefore any info is far from set in stone.

The official story: Sega had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus that Sega has donned its warmers for Sonic Unleashed, as evidenced by the patent filing coupled with the leaked screenshots and video. As for specific details about the game, all else runs the gamut of utterly fabricated to plausibly speculative.

Sega have a rather typical approach when it comes to advertising their games. They make a game look good, but flop it due to the lack of development on it whatsoever. Sonic on 360 and ps3 being an example. Thay may happen to Sonic Unleashed, but the game sounds quite unique in that retrospective, so I'll give Sega a chance.

Looks promising. Sounds like it, too. I can't be too sure.

Is it a WereHog or a Hedgewolf? At least its not another HedgeHog character (Shadow, Silva ,Amy) . Please Sonic dont screw this up make it the best EVER. The Werehedge (or whatever it is) is an enemy at first but then Sonic and him work together to defeat an even greater enemy ALL Sonic console games are like that. I hope the HedgeWolf (OMG) stays an enemy. I hope this is reallly good (WereHedge)OMG(will probably only appear in the nightime levels or sonic is the WereHedge and that is the Melee Aspect. A good Idea on Sega's part would be to look at soe of the action/ adventure games here in the States. (From God of War) Players love button pressing sequences with awesome animations

The game's first speculation broke with 1up.com way back last November. It's not really clear what console these screenshots are coming from though it probably looks like the 360. 1up.com ALSO got this story before GS did and claims the game may be multiplatform. This so called "Dennis" is an German magazine editor not an SEGA employee. He actaully revealed "Nights Jounrey into Dreams" last spring. While you can automatically assume that this is a mulitplatform game, there's reason to believe that this may in fact be the first rumored Dreamcast 2 title. It all depends on who's behind it's development. If Sonic Team USA is behind, it will be a multiplaform game, if Sonic Team Japan is behind it, then it might also be a DC2 game in development any speculation on Dreamcast 2 would no doubt have to come from Japan and may also explain Yuji Naka's long two year absence with Prope. An addition to this title, Sega is also working on a Sonic RPG game.

Its sad. The best form I've seen Sonic in the past 2 decades has been in Smash Bro. I hope they can finally get one right since there has not been a good sonic game since Genesis. The whole werewolf thing seriously raises my doubts though. Sigh....

Wait, main character turning into a wolf...Hey wait, that sounds awfully familiar...Didn't Nintendo do that recently?

Interesting, they seem to have gone back to a more traditional, cartoony look for some of the character designs, (Dr. Eggman especially). I'm looking forward to it, hope they offer it on the Wii. I hope that they are able to incorporate other sonic characters, such as Knuckles and Tails into the gameplay as important features, instead of lame side kick thingies. I'm getting tired of being bludgeoned over the head by sonic clones (shadow, silver) who have greater character depth than the main guy. One of the greatest assets to the old side scrollers was that Sonic, Tails and Knuckles each brought a unique flavor to the game by playing the SAME levels! Quit giving the side characters lame side missions to while making the bulk of the game revolve around running around with Sonic (or his clones).

Well, it is assuring to hear that Sega knows that their last Sonic games (other than rush) were terrible, this Werewolf thing scares me. They needto stop adding new characters already! Seriously. Why can't we just have another Sonic Adventure? Sonic Adventure 2 Owned. Seriously. They can at least bring the Chao Back. And this time? Take your time with this game, don't BS half of it! SEGA, please TAKE YOUR TIME! We are busy with Brawl, so no rush.

The last great Sonic game I played was Sonic CD; yes the one on the SEGA CD console add-on. Maybe I'm just rooted in the past but that was a superb game that has stood the test of time in the Sonic Franchise. Now I see that Sonic will be transforming into a WERE-version of himself and this leaves me pondering: "has SEGA run out of ideas?" Maybe it would be a good time to look back at the past games, not to re-hash them with 3D dressed up versions, but to examine what made them so much fun and dare I say "magical". In the meantime I'm going to daydream that SEGA will one day release Fighters Megamix 2 featuring the Virtua Fighters, Fighting Vipers, and Last Bronx characters, along with a slew of the other SEGA characters spanning all their franchises.

this game better be good sonic needs a good game hasn't been a decent once since the dreamcast just make a good job of it either where its like sonic adventure or go back to the side scrolling coz the latest attempts are not good

Karmacodelc18

Heh us fans could make a Sonic game and it'd be getting 9.5s at least how? The simple fact that we focused on next gen graphics and gameplay no annoying Silver and Shadow levels (Unless we ditch vehicles and make Shadow run real fast. And maybe Silver if we can come up with some good reason why he can't talk anymore.... lol)

No way in hell is this one is going to work. Like every other Sonic game since the original 2d outings, this is doomed, and trying to have high hopes about this are not going to help the game or your own sanity. Dont get me wrong, I love Sonic - he is my mascot of choice, but they have never gotten a game right since the 90s. Its sad but true. It seems the only chance for a Sonic game to turn out decent is if someone other than Sonic Team makes it. Sonic Team expired long ago, and it is surprising sega lets this studio continue to churn out duds each year. Its killing the franchise (if not considered dead already). You want a hit? Make something like the DS game for home consoles, without the humans, pirates, genie lamps, warewolves and all this other crap. And for heaven's sake, concentrate on the gameplay before graphics.

ALRIGHT... IF THIS EVEN SEES THE LIGHT OF DAY...TO ANYONE WITH HOPE FOR SEGA... SEGA PLEASE... I AND THE NUMEROUS OTHERS OUT THERE. PLEASE STOP MAKING THESE STUPID 3D FREE ROAMING AND ETC PIECES OF CRAP SONIC GAMES. HOW ABOUT YOU GO BACK, AND PUMP OUT SOME NEW LEVELS OF THE CLASSIC SIDE SCROLLER SONIC. THAT MADE YOU SO MUCH MONIES! THEN AFTER YOU MAKE THOSE IF YOU REMEMBER HOW. THEN AND ONLY THEN YOU CAN PUMP OUT SOME DIFFERENT STUFF. SIMPLE... 90'S SONIC + YOUR 90'S SIDE SCROLLER SYSTEM + NEW LEVELS = AMAZING SONIC GAMES WITH ENHANCED GRAPHICS. I KNOW IT'S BASIC, BUT YOU GUYS ARE SMOKING SOMETHING THAT ISN'T GOOD. GO BACK PUMP OUT A LONG SIDE SCROLLER SONIC THEN... THEN I *MIGHT* THINK ABOUT BUYING ANYTHING WITH SEGA ON IT THANK YOU, JUSTIN FOGLESONG I typed it in caps so maybe it'll mean something

its got to come out the ps3, and how could you complain about wanting a 2d sonic? Have you seen the video? Looks sweet, like its switching between 2d style and 3d.

Does "A HUGE production budget" mean they are going to try and make a good Sonic game? I'm impressed and shocked that Sega is not just going to crap in a DVD case and earn $50 per case sold.

...."Warewolf?!" lulz. Man, I sometimes wonder about half of the people on here. Werewolf is freakin spelt properly in the article. How they reached "Warewolf?!" is beyond me. Anyway, I do agree with him. I really wish they'd just drop 99% of the Sonic Adventure and beyond crap and go back to making near-storyless Sonic games. I wouldn't mind the story at all except that it's currently insanely lame, and darn near painful to watch. Sonic Rush was alright, but then again it barely had any story and didn't rely on animated cutscenes.

This one better not suck the last one that kicked butt was on the Dreamcast and what a game that was.

It'd be great if they actually made a decent game this time around. I actually liked Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, but it's gone downhill from there. I imagine that Bioware's DS game will be most excellent, given their pedigree-but if this one winds up sucking, the franchise will be in grave danger of being forgotten about.

This game looks beautiful... but I cannot in good faith be excited by anything Sonic Team puts out until I actually play it. There hasn't been a truly awesome Sonic game since Sonic 3 for the Genesis and Sonic Team hasn't had their hand in ANY good game since Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast.

The last time we were promised a "HUGE" new Sonic game that will make the series good again, we got Sonic 2006. Hoping for load times that last less than 30 seconds each!

The first Sonic Adventure game for the Dreamcast play nicely, but the voice acting was pitiful and the story line was kinda...hard to follow. The second SA game for the GameCube could've been great. It, too, played very well. But the voice acting was still subpar and the camera was utterly horrendous. The games since then, save for the GBA titles, have been mediocre. Now, BioWare's had trouble making bad games, especially in the last few years with KOTOR and Mass Effect. If anyone's going to revive Sonic, they will. As for this werewolf rumor...well, much as I found it to be cool in Twilight Princess, I don't know that it'd work so well as a mechanic for Sonic the Hedgehog...however, I could very well see it as an enemy

As i said many times some games dont need to go 3-D it only makes the series worse. Sonic and Mega Man X series are those types of game. Granted the PSP Maverick Hunter X was 2-D with 3-D graphic it still didnt lose that 2-D feel.

sonic needs to return to his old form for a few games untill sega discover on how to make sonic work in 3d. They could easily make a 2d sonic for the wii if they use the controlls like they did for super paper mario

Sega should start it over. Lose those nobodies no one cares about that have been tagging after the hedgehog for too long now, leave only Tails (which is the MOST annoying of the bunch, but has been around since Sonic 2) and MAYBE Knuckles. Also, Sonic should drop the badass attitude, he definitely didn't need that in his glory days. But who am I kidding? If there is an RPG that is on the works, expect even more losers to help keeping the spotlight away from Sonic and his over-inflated ego skyrocketing to the estratosphere, since there will be even more room to build his dumb personality. Even this Sonic Unleashed will have a "brand-new face added to the rooster" (gee, I must have pee my pants in excitement... Not!). Don't take me wrong, I like Sonic, every now and then I play the classics and I really enjoyed Adventure 1 and 2. But it's been a long time since the last "universally acclaimed" Sonic game and if Sega keeps building up from this weak foundation the last games stood for, everything will crumble sooner or later. And my money is on sooner.

Way too many sonic games. Typed in Sonic got 200 games. Typed in Mario got 204 games. The first mario game came out years before the first sonic game. Plus mario games are way better anyway.
